19. Dragon Quest Builders
Popular as Minecraft is, there are plenty of players left cold by its lack of direction. Dragon Quest Builders gave us direction in spades. It took crafting games and merged them with a fantasy RPG – one of the classics – turning the world of Dragon Quest to rubble so we could rebuild it block by block. Fantasy villages surrounded by wilderness are always under threat, but when you're the one who built it suddenly that's personal. Every skeleton attack felt like an affront worth avenging, and every character we built for became a friend.
