38. Darkest Dungeon

The developers at Red Hook say they were inspired by the concept of "combat stress trauma" – such as that demonstrated by Bill Paxton’s Hudson in Aliens – when creating this gothic-mansion dungeon crawl. While its blend of real-time movement and turn-based combat hardly qualifies as original, its groundbreaking "Affliction" system most certainly does. Let a character's stress level max out and they can be overcome with fearfulness, irrationality or masochism, which can spread throughout your squad to further dent morale. (Flip side: by fighting off such Afflictions they score a temporary buff.) Psychological horror in a Lovecraftian RPG world makes this unmissable.
