1. The greatest story moment in the history of video games
MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR A 14-YEAR-OLD GAME TO FOLLOW
You've known this would be No. 1 since you started reading this feature, haven't you? With all due respect to BioShock's "would you kindly" – and that's a lot of due respect – BioWare's Darth Revan reveal remains the most mind-blowingly awesome story moment in gaming history.
Dozens of hours into this masterpiece of an RPG, your amnesiac hero with a knack for the Force has heard a lot about the horrors of some Sith Lord named Darth Revan. He's supposed to be dead, though, so no worries. Except, it turns out, he's not. In fact, as you find out during an encounter with his apprentice Darth Malak…he's actually you.
Could this twist have been portrayed effectively in a movie or a book? Sure. But only the medium of video games allows for its full impact. You weren't just watching this character develop – you were developing this character. Odds are, you even tried to emulate your own look while creating him or her. No getting around it – the Emperor Palpatine of this era in galactic history was about as "you" as was possible. If you weren't already a fan of BioWare RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, this single event in KOTOR made you one.
"A few years before Knights of the Old Republic was released, we had internal discussions at LucasArts about doing a big RPG with someone like BioWare," recalls Blackman, who himself suggested the game be set thousands of years in the past to allow for greater creative freedom. "They did an amazing job on every level. For me, the revelation surrounding Revan is one of the great Star Wars moments, right up there with Vader's declaration of 'I am your father.'"
