4. Buying a Nintendo 64 just for the Hoth level
OK, so maybe you really bought your N64 for Super Mario 64. But it was definitely the Hoth level in Shadows of the Empire that let you know you weren't getting it for just one game. We'd experienced the Battle of Hoth several times over in games by now – but never quite like this. Never with full 3D models that added that extra sense of "hell yeah!" to taking down an AT-AT with a harpoon and tow cable. This particular level was all over Nintendo's own marketing for the N64, acting as a true showpiece of what the new console was capable of. But the thing was…the rest of the game was kind of forgettable by comparison. Shadows was ported to PC a year later…where it may have been what got you to purchase your first 3D graphics card – it was LucasArts first PC game to require such a component.
