38. An epic space Battle of Endor
We had seen the space portion of the Battle of Endor portrayed in multiple games dating back to Return of the Jedi: Death Star Battle on Atari 2600 and the Return of the Jedi arcade game, but not until the final battle of X-Wing Alliance (which somewhat oxymoronically seats you in the cockpit of a Millennium Falcon-style ship at this point) did we get an experience lasting more than a few minutes. From pulling out of hyperspace to hearing Wedge say "I'm already on my way out," you're looking at a solid 45-minute experience that LucasArts put their heart and soul into.
"When I was trying to recreate the Battle of Endor, I watched all of Return of the Jedi's space combat scenes over and over and over again, frame by frame, to make sure that everything was in its proper place," says former LucasArts Designer David Wessman. "I discovered that there was very little continuity in those scenes – ships blowing up from fire that came from nowhere, ships shooting at what was actually empty space. And then the kicker...there is one frame that is a negative image – space is white and the stars are black! ‘WTH?' I asked myself. 'Did they really leave that in?'"
