Obsidian's follow up to the highly successful Knights of the Old Republic was one of the most subversive pieces of Star Wars media in terms of themes – it was uncharacteristically dark for a Star Wars story at the time, offering a particularly bleak view of its universe that refused to offer a happy ending no matter how you chose to play it. Kreia (later revealed to be Darth Traya) was the first character you met in the game and was later the last character you battled with. She had been both a member of the Jedi Council and a high lord of the Sith, and despised each equally. Her whole scheme throughout was an attempt to destroy the Force itself, to show that self-determination and existence beyond the simple dichotomy of light side/dark side was both possible and preferable. She was a villain, sure: but one with much to teach. Her arguments against the Force were both surprising and well-spoken, making her a unique voice in the larger conversation about Star Wars mythology.
