4. 'Black'

A game about a black ops specialist fighting terrorism with lovingly detailed real-world weapons (so much so, it was described as "gun porn" by it's creators at Criterion Games,) Black laid down a blueprint that modern-military shooters in the Battlefield and Call of Duty series would follow, particularly Call of Duty: Black Ops. While games like Black became common, they lacked one of its best features: high-quality audio design, which went to great lengths to make chaotic gunfights feel readable to players. Black assigned different pitches to the firearms of different enemies, turning a potential cacophony of bullets into what the designers called "a choir of guns."
