Yesterday an image appeared on the site GTAForums with the suggestion it was from Rockstar's highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2. Others suggested it could be from a new Ubisoft game, perhaps the next iteration of the Far Cry series? Neither was true. It is in fact the work of 612 Games, and it's WIld West Online, a cowboy MMO inspired by Red Dead Redemption.
"There's an audience for this that just wasn't being served on PC," Stephan Bugaj creative vice president of publisher DJ2, says to PC Gamer. "So we wanted to make this big, open Wild West world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in."
The PC-focused game will arrive on Kickstarter later this month and hopes to make $250,000 to support development. "Resource gathering and building camps is going to have more of the social aspects of other MMOs," says Bugaj. "There's going to be story, character, and gameplay-driven motives to keep playing, but we haven't yet fully worked out what the progression system is going to be for that."
At least as far viral marketing goes, being mistaken for the most-anticipated game of the year is definitely a strong start.
