An attempt to cash in on Sonic the Hedgehog's radical Nineties attitude by replacing him with a cat, Bubsy had already starred in two mediocre side-scrolling platformers before achieving his final and most obnoxious form in Bubsy 3D. Garish colors, his bugged-out eyes, and a barrage of unfunny quips made it annoying to look at or listen to – yet playing it was worse. The transition from 2D to 3D was a rough period for platformers. Jumps became impossible to judge and cameras felt like they were attached to random bats who happened to be in the vicinity of the game. Even Donkey Kong fell to the 3D platformer curse, so an almost-ran like Bubsy had no chance.
