While 2016 has been a tough year for lots of reasons, there have been some bright spots worth remembering. Not least of which is the fact that we've been treated to some truly fantastic games. Often we're blessed with at least one or two releases destined to be remembered as classics each year, but over the past 12 months we got to play literally dozens of phenomenal experiences worth celebrating.

In this quick five-minute video we've tried to encapsulate what made this year great. From simple mobile delights like Clash Royale and Super Mario Run, to epics like Dark Souls 3 and Uncharted 4, or magnificent shooters like Overwatch, Doom and Titanfall 2. There were brilliant indie games made by incredibly talented small teams (including Stardew Valley which was made by just one guy), brain-bending puzzle games and beautiful, moving examples of interactive storytelling like Oxenfree, Firewatch and That Dragon, Cancer. We even got a glimpse of virtual reality's future potential.
