I remember showing up at that shoot with the makeup already done," says Marilyn Manson, whose second album, Antichrist Superstar, was at the top of the charts when he landed his first Rolling Stone cover. "I was obsessed with worms and snakes -- the idea of being a worm or being engulfed in worms, and things of that nature. In that photo, it ended up looking like I was a snake. I felt there was something very tribal and magical about the whole image. That shot is still the most special of any magazine I've ever been on. "The shoot only took about ten minutes," Manson continues. "The photographer stood me against the wall, took ten photos and said, 'That's it.' I suppose any asshole with a camera can shoot 150 pictures and get one good one. "The cover came out on my birthday. And we did listen to the Dr. Hook song 'Cover of the Rolling Stone,' and there were drugs snorted off the cover, and there were probably underage girls in the room at the time. Looking back at that photo, it reminds me how I became a found piece of art in some ways. I am the new urinal -- the new Marcel Duchamp toilet bowl -- and I like that." (Posted Sep 30, 2004)
