On HBO's new Aaron Sorkin-penned drama The Newsroom – which was just renewed for a second season – Jeff Daniels plays Will McAvoy, a disgruntled anchor who's mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore. The combination leads him and his team to stop reporting to grab ratings, and start telling the stories that matter. Recently, Daniels sat down with Rolling Stone for a chat that touched on the good and bad in cable news, the difference between a journalist and those putting on a show, and Sorkin's storytelling skills. "Guys like that should be writing about things that matter," Daniels says of writers like Sorkin and David Mamet. "Because then, to me, it's a great use of their unique and extraordinary talents."
