Whitfield, who served in the Air Force as one of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, won two golds in 1948 in the 4x400 relay and 800-meter dash, repeating in the latter event four years later. He also served in the Korean War and became the first African-American to win the AAU's James E. Sullivan Award, which is given to the best amateur athlete in America.
