1992 Barcelona Games, 1996 Atlanta Games
Medal count: One gold, one bronze
With the Americans on the verge of beating the Russians for the first time, Dominique Moceanu fell twice in the vault. Representing the last hope for her team, Strug fell on her first attempt, injuring her ankle. With coach Béla Károlyi famously urging her on, repeating "you can do it," Strug landed the vault, saluted the judges, and collapsed to her knees. Her 9.712 score sealed the U.S. win, and Károlyi carried her to the podium to accept gold. She was later treated for torn ligaments and damaged tendons.
