Former Gucci designer and fashion icon Tom Ford doesn't play by the usual industry show-and-tell rules. For his eponymous womenswear line, now in its second season, he eschews gauzy on-schedule catwalk shows for private showings in London. For Fall 2012, the veil of exclusivity drew ever more discreet: he wasn't even listed on the Fashion Week calendar, and only a few of Ford's closest allies made it behind the velvet rope, sans cameras.
Despite the designer's insistence that "no one wants to take any risks" on the red carpet, an unafraid Gwyneth Paltrow showed up at the Oscars in a brilliant white cape from his Fall 2012 collection, allowing the public to steal a glimpse at the new season. Nearly a month later – and on the heels of The Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence's revealing another Ford gown at the film's Paris premiere – we finally get full access to Tom Ford Fall 2012 in all its splendor.
It's obvious why fashion used to worship Gucci under Ford, and why exhibitionist pop stars like Beyoncé and Rihanna continue to adore his work: if "fashion is about sex" (words once immortalized by Vivienne Westwood), Ford is its primary evangelist. All the clothes for Fall 2012 are about looking powerful, slinky and come-hither. The leather bustier dresses make their case clear, and even the trenchcoats look carnal when paired with python boots. Call the looks Gucci b-sides if you want – and you'd have a point – but Ford's tried-and-true equilibrium between sex and style is a crowd-pleaser that calls for little modification.
