Half of all Netflix users connect to its online video streaming service using a video game system such as the PlayStation 3, Wii or Xbox 360. Viewers who favor Hulu’s digital video service prefer to access movies and TV shows via computer, with 89% of users watching on desktops or laptops instead.
According to a recent survey by Nielsen of 12,000 people conducted in March 2011, findings also show that Internet-connected Blu-ray players and TVs account for only 11% and 6% of Netflix streaming, respectively. Hulu usage is even less on these devices, which generate only 2% of views. But Hulu does lead in the number of users who stream video to TV by connecting sets to their computer, with one fifth of all respondents doing so as opposed to just 14% of Netflix users. Interestingly, set-top streaming video devices such as Roku’s boxes, TiVO DVRs and Apple TV generate only between 1-5% of views.
According to the survey, Netflix is used primarily to watch movies, with 53% of users tuning in to stream films, 11% to watch TV shows and 36% to enjoy both. Conversely, Hulu is primarily utilized for TV show viewing, with 73% of users employing the service to catch up on primetime favorites, and only 9% and 18% looking for movies or either form of entertainment, respectively.
