Despite flagging sales, which have led to a recent $80 price drop on the glasses-free handheld video game system, a new Flame Red Nintendo 3DS is coming on September 9. Selling for $169.99 and shipping alongside new sci-fi arcade outing Star Fox 64 3D, it will expand currently available color options, which include Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue.
Two new games, whimsical platform-hopper Super Mario 3D Land and frantic racer Mario Kart 7, will also ship for the system in November and December, respectively. Paired with the new aesthetic refresh, Nintendo hopes the ventures will turn around its ailing fortunes, which have led to falling stock prices and executives’ recent public acceptance of pay reductions.
Over 830,000 units of the handheld 3D gaming system have been sold in the US since launching on March 27. But despite the recent introduction of popular titles like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and services such as Netflix streaming movies and TV shows, the portable console continues to struggle to gain commercial acceptance.
