Poet, scholar and cultural catalyst Allen Ginsberg passed away Saturday morning at 2:39 a.m. EST. Ginsberg, who announced that he had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer on April 3, slipped into a coma that same night and never regained consciousness. He ultimately suffered a fatal heart attack brought on by the cancer. A private Buddhist memorial service, called the Ceremony of Sukhadati, was held this morning in Manhattan. Ginsberg is survived by his stepmother, Edith, and a brother, Eugene.
