12. Georgia / R.E.M.
Athens, Georgia is about as fertile a musical bed as this country has ever seen, producing a bumper crop of important acts that dates back to the 1970s. Widespread Panic, Flat Duo Jets, Vic Chesnutt, the B-52s, Danger Mouse and the majority of Elephant 6 collective all spent time beneath the Arch, though there's no band more synonymous with the city than R.E.M., who formed there in 1980.
