Wal-Mart Website Gets Online Movie, Video Streaming

Mega-retailer Wal-Mart is the latest company to enter the streaming online video arms race, having announced plans to stream numerous movies over the Internet via its website the same day they arrive on DVD.

Following Netflix’s controversial decision to split its unlimited DVD and video streaming subscription plans in two, the company, which owns digital video service Vudu, now offers online movies for viewing directly from Walmart.com. Over 20,000 films will be available for rental or purchase from the site, which attracts roughly 40 million visitors monthly, many to be offered the same day that DVDs arrive at stores.

Movie rentals are priced between $0.99-$5.99, with options to buy films digitally priced at $4.99-$24.99, making the service more akin to iTunes than subscription-based alternatives.
