The Write Stuff: Authors Can Now Digitally Sign eBooks

POSTED:

Avid readers who appreciate their books signed can now enjoy a digital alternative, courtesy of Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color eReader, whose new feature lets authors scribble their virtual John Hancocks in eBooks using an electronic stylus.

Thanks to a 1.2.0 software firmware update that adds Android 2.2 support and enables the gadget to function like a tablet PC, the Nook finally allows support for electronic signing of pages. Using the function, authors can sign their names or write inscriptions on virtual volumes, giving bibliophiles reason to stand in line and attend signing sessions once again.

Writer and illustrator Sandra Boynton is among the first to hold an eBook signing event for the new digital Going to Bed Book, with more writers and volumes expected to follow shortly. Whether or not digitally signed manuscripts will command the same level of cachet, or collectability, among fans of fine literature remains to be seen, however.
