New Nook eReader Coming This Month

A new eReader device, most likely a new e-ink Nook model, will be coming from Barnes & Noble later this month, an SEC filing reveals. Per the 8-K report, the previously unknown eBook player will be announced on May 24th, 2011.

Insiders have speculated that the new eReader may have greater computing power and features takin to what tablet PCs offer, potentially running on the slate-computer-optimized Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. These suggestions come on the heels of a recent software update for the Nook Color, which added Android 2.2 Froyo support and an app store, giving the previously single-function device more general computing capabilities.

Experts have also posited that a refresh of the bookseller’s original Nook, a low-end model that has unsuccessfully battled to overtake Amazon’s more affordable, feature-laden and widely popular Kindle, may be in the offing instead. For now, though, all remain just rumors and idle musings, but it thankfully won’t be long before the final word on Barnes & Noble’s latest foray into digital publishing leaks.
