A New York Superior Court judge has denied a motion by Beyoncé's lawyers to dismiss a multi-million-dollar lawsuit by a video game development company. In April, game makers Gate Five claimed that the superstar backed out of a deal they had for Starpower: Beyoncé, a motion-sensing dance game, necessitating the layoffs of 70 employees around last Christmas. Due to this ruling, their lawsuit can move forward, with the possibility of Beyoncé being called for deposition.
Gate Five claims that it invested more than $6 million into the project before the singer "double crossed" them over compensation issues. The dispute resulted in Gate Five losing a $19.2 million financing deal, they allege.
Beyoncé's lawyers have countered that the singer was within her rights to exercise the termination provision of the contract. In addition to over $100 million in damages, Gate Five is seeing an injunction against the singer's involvement in other video games.
