Google is close to launching an online music store, according to reports from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The shop, which is being designed to compete with Apple and Amazon's digital media stores, is expected to open in the near future, though Google has yet to close a deal with any of the four major record companies.

Google's online music store would likely work in tandem with their Google Music Beta service, which offers cloud storage for music files that users can stream remotely on wireless devices. Google Music Beta launched without licenses in place back in May.
