Create Your Own Motion-Control Apps

POSTED:

With Microsoft having opened its Kinect motion control system to amateur PC tinkerers, Sony will offer similar resources for the PlayStation Move.

Its new Move Me application for PlayStation 3 will allow students, researchers and hobbyists to create original programs and uses for the platform, whose focus was previously confined to gaming.

Available for download from the PlayStation Network in spring 2011, inventors can use Move Me to interface with the PlayStation Move and create completely new ways to interact with the technology. Possible examples include programs designed to aid physical therapy subjects with rehabilitation or original applications built to assist users with teaching, fitness or mastering musical and artistic expression.

Compatible with Windows and Linux PCs, as well as tablets and smartphones, amateur game designers are also free to have a field day prototyping and testing gonzo new concepts, as no SDK or licensing agreement is needed.

"PlayStation Move's camera-plus-controller combination allows for the most precise and immersive gaming experiences," said John McCutchan, senior engineer, SCEA Developer Support. "Now we're formally taking that advanced technology… and offering it to innovators outside of our traditional game development community so they can create their own applications to impact the world in exciting new ways."
