Awesome Apps: Sheet Music Goes Digital on iPhone, iPad

New free iPhone, iPad and iPod touch app iSheetMusic hopes to revolutionize the way artists access and view sheet music by optimizing it for on-demand purchase and portable screening via mobile devices. Now available for download via Apple’s App Store, over 10,000 songs can presently be accessed virtually anytime, anywhere, with 30-40,000 total compositions expected to be available by year-end.

In addition to public domain songs, commercially licensed tunes from the music libraries of Hal Leonard Corp. and Alfred Music Publishing will also be offered. Musicians can buy sheet music for $0.99 per song, or acquire bundles of five tracks for $2.99, with all available for purchase and download from within the app, or via iSheetMusic.com. Capable of being browsed on touchscreens, digital sheet music can also be skimmed, rotated and viewed by pinching or zooming. The app additionally offers a built-in metronome, letting users keep beats, count and enjoy automatic page turning, which should make it simpler to focus on instruments themselves.

“iSheetMusic has the power to help more people play music,” says co-founder Matthew Sutton. At the very least, it should also help avoid pesky papercuts.
