See Dawes Perform Slinking 'When the Tequila Runs Out' on 'Kimmel'

Band also announces An Evening With Dawes, a sprawling 50-city tour

Dawes performed "When the Tequila Runs Out" on 'Jimmy Kimmel.'

Considering the ominous title of Dawes' new LP – September's We're All Gonna Die - it would be reasonable to expect a maudlin tone when it comes to their live performances. That was not the case, however, for the Los Angeles-based foursome's appearance on last night's Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they played an energetic version of current single "When the Tequila Runs Out," full of singer Taylor Goldsmith's prophetic lyrical delivery and deep-pocket grooves. Watch the video above.

On We're All Gonna Die, the band's Blake Mills-produced fifth record, Dawes ventured into new territory by experimenting with slicker, synthier sounds that sharpened the edges on their usually rounder, rootsier jams. Live, they relax into that familiar territory, adding a session player to provide some slide guitar and letting keys player Lee Pardini add the newfound sonic shimmer.

"Every record has been a step to finding new fans or finding different fans," Goldsmith told Rolling Stone Country last year. "And every record has been a steady incline in terms of the rooms we play. But it's also been really cool to have a fan base that accepts what we do without, 'oh, they better do another version of this or that song.' That's the case with artists we've learned from – like with 'Rockin' in the Free World,' I don't think there were managers and labels massaging into a classic. I think it was just something that Neil Young wrote, and that's been how we've written everything."

A tireless touring band, Dawes won't be ending their road habit anytime soon: in January, they'll launch their An Evening With Dawes Tour kicking off in San Diego,. The 50-date run will feature two complete sets each night devoted to both new tracks and fan favorites.
