Marty Stuart Plots U.S. Tour, Shares Kaleidoscopic 'Torpedo' Video

Spacey, surf rock-influenced instrumental appears on Stuart's new album 'Way Out West'

Marty Stuart's surf rock instrumental "Torpedo" appears on the new album 'Way Out West.'

Marty Stuart will support the release of his new album Way Out West with an extensive spring tour, which was previewed with a show last night at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Included on the trek are numerous headlining shows as well as festival dates, plus a pair of shows supporting the Steve Miller Band at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

As suggested by its title, Way Out West focuses heavily on the sounds and themes of the American West, inspired by Stuart's experiences the Mojave Desert. Previously released songs "Whole Lotta Highway (With a Million Miles to Go)" and "Way Out West" conjure the restless spirit of a traveling musician seeing countless mile markers drift past, while numerous others evoke the sun-baked mystery of the desert.

On the album's spacey instrumental "Torpedo," Stuart and his crack band the Superlatives nod to California's wave-chasing surf rock era of the early Sixties with off-kilter, reverb-heavy guitar solos and propulsive rhythm. The "Torpedo" video comes with some of that Sixties style as well, using colorful stills from the studio recording process like the opening credits of a forgotten spy film.

Way Out West, which was produced by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, arrives March 10th. Next up, Stuart is set to play a solo acoustic benefit show March 1st for New York's Housing Works.
