Opening with a foot-stomp beat, Darius Rucker's new song "For the First Time" points to a more muscular sound for the country singer's upcoming album. While not a full departure for Rucker, the new single does break fresh ground, which reinforces its lyrical theme.
All about diving into life without hesitation and embracing the unknown, "For the First Time" was written by Rucker with Derek George and Travis Hill. "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" sings Rucker in the chorus, before encouraging the love interest of the lyrics to "let yourself go / follow that feeling / maybe something new is what you're needing."
While "For the First Time," with its sing-along chorus and windows-down vibe, is suited for country radio play – no doubt a bid for another Number One, following the chart-topping "If I Told You" – Rucker, and producer Ross Copperman, make a point of incorporating stringed instruments into the mix. Listen closely at the end for a flourish of mandolin.
Rucker is gearing up for the release of his fifth album for Capitol Records Nashville later this year. As yet untitled, it's the follow-up to 2015's Southern Style.
