Michael Jackson's "This Is It" Conquers the Global Box Office/Here at Home, Not So Much. Explain.

November 2, 2009 10:36 AM

Taking in a huge $101 million on its worldwide opening, Michael Jackson's This Is It — a concert film drawn exclusively from rehearsal footage — has now extended its intended two-week run in theaters through Thanksgiving. Maybe now the American audience won't drag its ass. The $21.3 million domestic total for the weekend was enough to hit No. 1 and send the hot-hot-hot Paranormal Activity to second place, with $16.5 million, even on Halloween. But, please, America, your middling interest in This Is It almost had the late King of Pop eating the dust of the OMFG dreadful Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds 3-D Concert Tour.

Read Peter Travers' review of This Is It

So I'm asking: What kept you away? Were you too busy this weekend trick-or-treating? Or does your reluctance go deeper than that? Did the pedophilia scandals dogging Jackson turn you off? Or maybe you thought rehearsal footage doesn't constitute a 'real' concert film? Because I think This Is It offers a probing and privileged look inside the artistic process of a world-class entertainer, I'd like to hear your reasons. I'd also like to hear your picks for the best rock concert films. For the emotions as well as the heat they generate, I'd go with The Last Waltz, Stop Making Sense, Elvis: That's The Way It Is and, yes, Woodstock.

Check out Rolling Stone's picks for the top 25 music DVDs

Arguments will now be heard about what are the best rock concert films and whether Michael Jackson's This Is It deserves to join the exclusive club.

This Is It! is the best! Not just about the movie, but the message behind the music. Some things are meant to last for a moment and some a lifetime. Michael was Magic and will always live in the atmosphere of earth. He'll never be forgotten. You can't take away what God meant for GOOD. The message of LOVE will prevail, because nothing can defeat LOVE.

like the performers(with tears in their eyes, reminiscing MJ), i cried, thinking how the world has missed, not just a great artist/entertainer, but a beautiful person(i always know he's a beautiful person in the inside, but this documentary confirms it). I'm a MJ fan, and from all the documentaries i've watched, this is the best, because it's the last days of his life, showing his talents& shared his belief&passion, which is to make a better world , starting with oneself. I could see every one(the crew) was in awe, and yet as one said, he was a humble person, he spoke so gently to them and encouraged each of the performers, he said to the female guitarist"i want u to shine, this is your moment, we'll be there with you"), and even when he doesn't like the sounds or the beat, he said it with such kindness,& never intimidating. He's a genius.Rest in peace, Michael.

tehirah | November 14, 2009 9:33 AM

I was never a follower of MJ, however, one has to stop and admire the great talent of this man. The music he has produced is for all ages. Not many musicians can achieve that level.

To those who hate MJ - I say; Zip-it-up. What have you ever offered to society...and who cares about your opinion? MJ was a renown international entertainer. MJ's legacy is here to say. What about you hater? ..you die today - and no one remembers you the following week! Get what I mean...? You know the answer!

May God bless, MJ's kids and may the Lord give Katherine the strength, love and courage to help them through life. Amen.

Isn't the US of A the nation that doubted, disrespected, humiliated and accused Michael Jackson of untrue things? Europe and Asia have always treated this greatest artist cum humanitarian much better (sans the British press).
There are many people including myself who would say- the only thing I love about America is Michael Jackson!

"Arguments will now be heard about what are the best rock concert films and whether Michael Jackson's This Is It deserves to join the exclusive club."

Excuse me- "This is it" was not a planned concert movie. It was not even a "making of the concert" video recording. Please don't compare it with concert movies which are planned and made out of concerts. "This is it" is a not even full fledged rehearsal footage. And the artist himself is not here today to decide what should have gone into the movie even if he was willing to release these raw footage.

However, Kenny has done a great job and given the greatest gift a MJ fan can get at this point.

If you still want to compare- "This is it" has grossed more money than any other concert movie, being the raw, amateur, early rehearsal footage it is. So, the answer is not difficult to find.

The best rock concert film is: "Cocksucker Blues" featuring the Rolling Stones. Some people even think it's better than that classic Joe Christ film, "Acid is Groovy, Kill the Pigs!". But, I'm not so sure.

i am a hispanic american and very proud i was raise by immigrant parents, my point is how ignorant american people can be, i grew up knowing MJ love his music, talent and his love for everyone. what amazes me is how controlled by media, government and gossip americans are. their brain is program onces set that is it. the beauty of MJ was, he controlled his own mind, music and business he was a victim of society greed, i am amazed how much the media manipulates our society to believe, to hate, i hate to say it but american you lost you rights many years ago you are controlled. hater open your mind think for yourself LOVE U MJ RIP

JP | November 8, 2009 1:46 AM

To Anonymous:

I've got an independent mind. There is too much cloud of suspicion around Michael Jackson to think that he could have been innocent of the accusations.

I've just seen "Stop Making Sense". I am kicking myself for waiting so long to see it. It is fantastic! Alot better than what "This Is It" could provide. A complete artistic concert experience that I haven't seen before. A second and third respectively would be: U2 - Live In Austrilia and Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleep.

NOT AMERICAN AT ALL | November 7, 2009 11:58 AM

THIS IS IT is the most popular movie concert around the globe.. it's better than any other musical movie concert the world has ever seen.. and what about the others ?? i bet not many people around the globe even recognize it... different from This Is It.. every peoples around the globe u asked about This Is It.. then they will say at least .. "i knew it.. that's Michael Jackson movie concert".. and what i've said is totally the fact !! and sorry for the haters of MJ.. i will just say accept this fact that MJ is the greatest intertainer the world has ever seen..
and i thing that Americans has a terrible lost when MJ died.. because they lost someone that make they world even better.. Godspeed.. MJ Rest In Peace !

Anonymous | November 7, 2009 12:02 AM

I think pretty much all the positive and critical thinkers said it all. If you see this movie, you would prove that you have an independent mind that is free from bias and that you make your own conclusions. If you are having problems seeing this is it then you are saying the media is a truth teller. If that is the case, may be God should bring out apostles from the media corp to distribute the gospel. The fact is media as one brilliant minister calls it is the mouth piece of Satan.

Leslie | November 6, 2009 10:26 PM

OH, and before I get accused of being another crazed, wishy-washy Michael Jackson fan, let me submit this as my favorite concert film:

RUSH in Rio!!!

JP | November 6, 2009 3:16 PM

I have to say Michael Jackson's fans are the most gullible fans in the world. I've read most of the comments praising Michael Jackson and this rush job of a movie. Either you are denying the plausibility of the molestation charges or cautiously saying it's alright what he did to the children, because he was a great entertainer and philanthropist. Take a deep breath and let some oxygen get to your brain. Yes, Michael Jackson was a successful pop star. What the movie is proof that Michael Jackson was going to put on a Vegas-type show in London. With no new material, just the tired old hits the made him millions of dollars over the years. If you like him, fine. Just stop insulting everybody's intelligent with your warped revisionist HIStory.

Megan | November 6, 2009 1:23 PM

To add, Sintra was also a decent actor. He won Academy Awards for his work in "From Here to Eternity" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". He also did excellent work in the "Manchurian Candidate". He could dance in his early years but wasn't really known for it. Anyway, back to MJ. Thanks Marian Haddad for your thoughts on mine and VJS's posts. It's great to read posts relating to MJ's music as opposed to the scandals. There's so much on that, too much. Who's to know what's true and what's not. What I know is true is that this gentle personality made wonderfully entertaining music over his lifetime using his multiple talents and endless imagination. That's what makes him memorable and one of the greatest. (Still not ready to say the greatest that ever lived.) I saw his movie and will see it again. Thanks for rocking our world MJ!

Marian | November 6, 2009 12:40 AM

Jezebel. I, too, am wanting to see it two times on FRIDAY, back to back. To get it, enter double time . . . I saw it once only, on opening night. This next time, I want to see it twice in an actual row, back to back . . . then before Thanksgiving, at least once more on just a one-run visit

Marian Haddad | November 6, 2009 12:29 AM

VJS. The Beatles are priceless. And they changed much. But Elvis fans will say that the Beatles were preceded by Elvis. It's all connected. No one is diminishing the Beatles. And frankly, we are not delusional to think that when you compare, ELVIS, THE BEATLES, SINATRA and MJ, only one of the four could do ALL THINGS that include write, sing, dance, choreograph, and do groundbreaking films no one had done for music. I just saw RAIN tribute to the Beatles because they are HUGELY important and forever. And MJ not only said he was a fan of their music, but as you point out . . . he BOUGHT IT. Add business acumen to the talents I listed on him, and YES, when you combine all those talents . . . then MJ, quantitatively, is clearly ahead of the game, as an "ENTERTAINER" . . . not taking away the talents the others held.

Marian Haddad | November 6, 2009 12:25 AM

Megan, with all due respect, I/we have considered the Beatles, Elvis and Sinatra. Beatles were/are phenom, but coudln't dance, perform, do film. Elvis also could not do film and could dance in his younger years to a degree, but nothing close to Astaire, Kelly and Fosse. Sinatra could sing.

Megan | November 5, 2009 12:27 PM

Diana | November 2, 2009 10:34 PM "arguably the greatest entertainer that ever lived."

Just a thought. MJ was a power house talent of his time but I wouldn't agree that he was the "greatest entertainer that ever lived", Diana, with all due respect to his fans and Barry Gordy. Concider the Beatles, Elvis and Sinatra. I believe this is a sentimental title only and will fade into history in several years. Case in point: Sammy Davis Jr. died in 1990. At that time, which was during MJ's peak and years past Sammy's peak, Davis was concidered the "greatest entertainer that every lived". How many remember this? He was also a "triple-threat" philanthropic entertainer who broke down color barriers of his day. The latter accomplishment being much more significant than MJ's...without dismissing what MJ did for black artists on MTV. I feel confident that MJ, a fan of Davis, would infact whole heartedly agree with this if he were still with us today. Again, just a thought. (BTW I'm not comparing record sales. MJ clearly outsold SD. As far as the Beatles are concerned they outsold MJ but when John Lennon and then George Harrison died niether was concidered the "greatest entertainer that ever lived" despite sales, visibility and influence that was equal to or greater than MJ's.)

indranee | November 4, 2009 8:15 PM

wait a sec... hold on, people. let's not start comparing MJ with the Beatles. he was a Beatles fan... he'd be the first one to demur. as for why America still, STILL, shies away from the greatest entertainer it has ever produced? well, Rolling Stone, you'd do well to ask YOURSELF that question. you and your media cohorts participated with barely-hidden glee in the crime of destroying an innocent man's reputation, career, and now, his life. yes, YOU are responsible for his death -- ALL OF YOU. and I hope you're laughing all the way to the bank because you sure won't be taking it with you when you finally follow him to the great beyond.

To All U Two Faced People | November 4, 2009 9:33 AM

I don't even no where to begin. First of all please READ, "Michael Jackson Conspiracy", you will know then that all the allegations against him were false. He was taken yet again for his money. How anyone could hurt such a loving, giving man is beyond me. Also I to like the Beatles, but they will never hold a candle to Michael's success. Have you seen his guiness world records??? I didn't think so...and the Beatles have how many? Did you see his awards? He has more then anyone...did the Beatles win entertainer of the Milenium? No don't think so. I could go on, but please give the man some credit for his musical accomplishments. He is a genius....I aslo think it's kinda funny that everytime Paul sings one of his own songs, monies go to Michael. Yeah, Michael was a genius...I hope "This Is It", wins something at the oscars...he deserves it....this concert would have been "The Greatest Show on Earth".....

In god's arms now....love you Michael

I saw THIS IS IT with my kids on Sunday. I sat there with tears in my eyes, while my kids kept asking when it would be over.

The Jackson 5's Greatest Hits was the first album I actually went to the store (Korvette's) to buy as a 9 year old kid (I'm 43 now). And while my musical tastes have evolved and matured over the years, there is still something magical to me when I hear the piano opening of I WANT YOU BACK. There's an emotional connection to that song that will never die for me. It was the first time in my young life that music made me feel something - joy.

Sure, Michael evolved and matured as well. Arguably into the greatest triple-threat entertainer the world has ever seen. But the passion in his vocal performances, existed even as a young child. Interestingly, I noticed that when he sang I'LL BE THERE in the movie, he seemed to convey the same passion in his performance that he did as a child. One might assume that after singing the same song for 40 years, it's performance might have gotten stale with age. But not for Michael - not even a little. It was simply breath-taking.

When Michael died he took a small part of MY childhood with him. If you can relate to what I'm saying, go see THIS IS IT!

alli | November 4, 2009 7:52 AM

This is it is wonderful. The world loved Michael despite what the American press tried to do to his rep, he is the greatest entertainer that ever lived, and the world knows it. Who cares if America does not know it. American press is just now looking for the next big scandal... and the most famous person in the world after Michael is Barack Obama... and I know the media has plans for him. Sad!

VJS | November 4, 2009 1:20 AM

BTW for the person who said that MJ is bigger and better then THE BEATLES you are delusional! THE BEATLES changed the world, MJ changed dance music. You also stated that you don't really here anyone state that THE BEATLES were an influence? Well what planet do you live on?? Please, THE BEATLES are the biggest thing the entertainment world has and will ever see! Next time check your facts before making very uneducated statements. I'll give you some facts; most albums sold in the history of the world THE BEATLES over 1.3 billion worldwide (MJ 750 million), Most #1 songs by any artist THE BEATLES with 27, Elvis 24, MJ 13! Lastly who's catalog did MJ buy and why? THE BEATLES because it is PRICELESS! PEACE.

Karen | November 4, 2009 1:05 AM

This is it! What a fantastic show that would have been. Like many others, I have been a fan for many years. I am the same age as Michael. It was amazing to watch Michael create his vision and put this concert together. A true genius at work. You get to see a side of Michael that most people have not seen. It was mesmerizing.

VJS | November 4, 2009 12:59 AM

I would say THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT by THE WHO and DON'T LOOK BACK by BOB DYLAN are the two best musical documentaries that I've ever seen.

VJS | November 4, 2009 12:52 AM

For the person who thinks MJ is bigger and better then THE BEATLES you are delusional! THE BEATLES changed the world MJ changed dance music! You don't hear people referance THE BEATLES as influences??? What planet do you live on. If you don't like THE BEATLES music that's one thing, but to think MJ compares to them in anyway shape or form is laughable. Check your facts THE BEATLES hold every musical record known to mankind. Most albums sold in the history of the world= THE BEATLES!(FACT) Most #1 singles in the history of the world= THE BEATLES!(FACT) and I could go on and on, but what's the point? I believe I already made it! BTW who and why do you think MJ bought the greatest catalog of music the world has ever known? Because it's priceless!!

cb | November 4, 2009 12:49 AM

AEG had to make their money back..it was good..not great,,the whole show wouldve been greater to see..only the real fan should see it anyways...and im a fan

MJ is number 1 and the KIng of Pop and always will be... | November 4, 2009 12:18 AM

I do not believe the allegations. even the child denied it and spoke on his behalf at the trial. Sue-happy parents.
I grew up on Michael Jackson's music. He's the best there is. He is the world's best humanitarian and gave to many charities and championed many causes in the name of humanity. A decent, disciplined, hardworking, human being that got smeared in the media for no reason. That's the real shame. I love you Michael Jackson! and always will!!! God bless you!

hubers6 | November 3, 2009 5:44 PM

Hands down the 2 best concert films are "The Last Waltz" and "Stop Making Sense". Just incredible films.

hubers6 | November 3, 2009 5:38 PM

Elvis was cowriter on "Heartbreak Hotel", "Don't Be Cruel", "Love Me Tender" and "All Shook Up", just to name a few of his hits. Not bashing, just giving some information.

Jenny | November 3, 2009 4:00 PM

I have seen the film two times . I want to see it again . Michael was part of my childhood and teeny years. He made wonderfull music and no one can dance like he did. I dont belive the child molestation allegations. Who has read and investigated a liitle bit more can easily see that this allegations are a lie .

Shakespeare | November 3, 2009 1:59 PM

THE LAST WALTZ is the best concert film. I dont want to see THIS IS IT for two points of views, one, the people hind this film are making $$ off of someones early death. I mean come on people he has only been dead a year! Second point of view I think he is a child molester, just because he wasnt found guilty means he had $$. My momma always told me if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it has to be a duck. Roman Polanski is a great film-maker but he did have anal sex with a 13 year old, should he have ever gotten an oscar NO! Jackson is in the same realm, great entertainer, but should be celebrated, NO!

Greg in La Crosse, WI. | November 3, 2009 12:47 PM

I've seen "This Is It" 3 times already & love more every time I see it! It's truly a beautiful materpiece of a showman at his creative best! He treats those he works with as though they were his equals & to some degree they are however, Michael sets the stage for what I will remember as his legacy of truly wonderful music & his dancing was still spot on in my view. I urge you to see the movie & see his magic at work b/c there likely will never be another one like him! R.I.P. Michael & GBU!!!

Hands down, The Last Waltz is the best concert film ever made!

Now with the new version, both picture and sound have been improved exponentially.

Even Scorsese mentions it in all his interviews.

Simply no contest.

Couldn't agree more with BlindMan | November 2, 2009 6:12 PM:

"There is a subculture in America that is in general is stuck “cynic’s cool” In this way MJ and “This is It” is an easy target for the insecure.
Both the NY times and LA times are afraid to claim MJ film has any real merit.
Claiming that only “foreigners” made it a hit. (sounds a little racist to me).
Although both papers will promote any half baked menial obscure violent tinged flick
to reaffirm they’ve still got “the cool.”
It is easier to knock something than it is to like something. (kind of like Fox News)".

I have seen TII now 8 times and I have seen The Sound Of Music 43 times now I am wondering if I will beat my own Sound of Music record. I think I will see TII this friday 2 times and probably another 4 times in the weekend so I think I will beat my record in a couple of weeks!!!

EB | November 3, 2009 6:32 AM

The movie was fantastic! Michael still had all his moves and though he held his voice back a bit at times for the upcoming shows, when he did let it go, it was better than ever! This concert, had it gone off, would have been phenomenal! Michael would have had the comeback and respect he so deserved. The love message he gave throughout was so beautiful too. This was the real Michael, not the media Michael and he was the best! Thank you Michael for the gift that was you! I'll never forget you!

amandria | November 3, 2009 6:23 AM

Between halloween and bootleg movies...the younger generation that does love Micheal watched it too...they just did it for free.

Amandria | November 3, 2009 6:21 AM

I went and saw it. I am a fan however. At first I had tears in my eyes, then I watched to see how healthy he was, then I was amazed that the man could still sing and dance amazingly considering the fact that according to the autopsy reports he suffered from moderate lung damage and arthritis...He must of really been in pain after those rehearsals. It gave you a sense of him as a performer, perfectionist...and as I stated before HE STILL HAD IT!! It would of been great.

aman | November 3, 2009 4:02 AM

Who even goes to the movie theater anymore? what the hell does that have to do with how awesome michael jackson was?

And I just have to say...to the Aussie who said "I wish MJ had come to Australia to live,we would have loved him unconditionally, you guys in the US are so judgemental and racist" that you are the biggest bullshitter of bullshitters...your country doesn't have a racism issue becaus eyou killed all the "other" races that were left. PLEEEEESE.

bobmoo79 | November 3, 2009 3:44 AM

To those people playing down the success of "This Is It":

In only a few days it has become the biggest grossing concert film of all time! That must be called a success in anybody's book. The previous record holder (Hannah Montana) took 13 weeks to get that far, so to do it in 5 or 6 days is astounding, it really is.
To say it has failed or been a disappointment is ridiculous.

His Biggest Fan | November 3, 2009 2:46 AM

I had the honor and opportunity of attending his Memorial @ Staples Center and the red carpet premiere. I met Kenny Ortega, who is a brilliant and humble man. He rivals me as MJ biggest fan.

These two experiences I will never forget. Being in the same room as Michael's lifeless body is the single most powerful moment of my life. I thank MJ for making it possible for me to be present.
You are safe now, Michael. Sleep in peace now...

Elmari | November 3, 2009 2:31 AM

I am from the U.S. and saw TII 3 times since it opened on 10/27. I am a big Michael Jackson fan. The third time I watched it, I brought my brother (who is not exactly a fan, but likes the music) and we watched it in IMAX. HE LOVED THE MOVIE!! I think there was some major box office punditry going on prior to the release of the movie and people just want to see Michael Jackson fail and be ridiculed because that's what they've always done. But remember, this was not a project sanctioned by Michael. It was all done by AEG and Sony to make money off their losses. IMO, Halloween wknd is not a great wknd for new movies in general, but TII held steady with about +/- $8 million each night for Fri/Sat/Sun. Considering that this movie was made up of footage that was not meant to be a film and it is a concert/documentary, I say it did very well! But I have to say this. . . people that are still prejudiced against Michael Jackson, that think he is a pedo or some freak, need to watch this movie. A lot of Americans have been POISONED by the lies and slandering of the American media of Michael Jackson and that is perhaps the reason why he did much better overseas. This movie shows THE REAL MAN, who is a genius, gentle, loving, kind, and the very essence of the word entertainer.

Penelope | November 3, 2009 1:37 AM

I'm 60 years old. My children grew up with MTV and Michael and some of my best memories are of my children and me dancing around the living room to Billy Jean or Beat It...and Thriller! There was nothing as much fun as watching my boys act out the zombie parts, dancing along with Michael. He has been part of our family! Watching this movie was a sweet and heart-wrenching visit into the past in which my children and I and Michael are still young with many long years ahead of us. I am sorry Michael is not among the living any more, but I am so glad that he lived and made music and danced and entertained us! This movie is going to remind those of us who loved him how much we have lost and will help those who vilified him see a side they may not ever have seen. It is a wonderful movie!

Diana | November 2, 2009 10:34 PM

I saw This Is It on Halloween and words cannot even describe how amazing this film is. I so desperately want to see it again, and cannot wait for the DVD to be released.
For those who are "reluctant" for whatever reasons, you really need to get over it and see this film. It is history in the making to get a look at how this legendary musical genius planned his shows. It is time to forget all the controversy, the fake allegations, and all of that nonsense and appreciate a true genius and his work.
And did someone honestly say they won't "pay full price to see a documentary film?"
Are you serious? You have no problem paying for the other crap movies that come out on a regular, but not a true piece of art from arguably the greatest entertainer that ever lived.
This just shows that unlike other countries, Americans have issues with their priorities. It is disgustingly laughable to think that Hannah Montana's "concert" film should even be mentioned in any proximity as Michael Jackson. And Paranormal Activity is definitely not worth the hype; who cares to watch a fake documentary filmed on one camera with a scary noise here and there.
No wonder MJ was planning to do his last shows in London. I seriously hope people stop dragging their feet and go see This Is It. MJ fan or not, it is impossible to be disappointed with the film. It was beyond amazing.

Pete K | November 2, 2009 10:29 PM

I went and saw TII 2 days ago, I was last into MJ's music when Off the Wall came out then I lost interest as his music achieved mainstream global status as I have always preferred to buy and listen to up and coming artists than established artists, call it musical snobbery if you like but WTF that's just the way I am.

Anyway as the voracious beast that the media is began devouring more and more of MJ's private life thereby compromising his ability to retain his professional credibility I began to lose interest in his ability as amusician whilst at the same time I was taking a much more active interest in Prince and what he was up to musically.

I have worked in technical production for many years now, I have worked on and seen many stadium concerts but never have I had the privilege of seeing the kind of work and dedication that goes into a concert at the level of an artist like MJ.

It must be remembered though that it is not just MJ who was responsible for the phenomenon that TII was going to be. Fortunately MJ had the ability to surround himself with some of the most brilliant practitioner's in their respective fields helping to create this particular entertainment spectacle and TII clearly shows that to full effect.

I was blown away with this film and I haven't said that about any other concert film since Prince released Sign of the Times.

Hope it's all good wherever you are now MJ and we will try and stop the fires. the bulldozers, the damage and destruction that should be getting as much attention from the media as your private life once did.

This film proves that when it comes to entertainment you are indeed the King.

Tonia | November 2, 2009 9:59 PM

It was incredibly tragic that MJ left us so soon. I'm sure his concerts would have been a great success and the documentary for "This Is It" shows that he and his team were well on their way to achieving his dream.

I was taken by how, like a true musician, MJ encouraged and guided his band inorder to draw out and shape the individual personalities of each song. Nothing is rushed. As he said sometimes it just has to simmer or sizzle and always nourish. In fact these moments with his collaborators were especially interesting in this film since we got to see a very non-tabloid and dare I say normal acting MJ. (Although his wardrobe could be a bit out-there at times. What was up with the cone shaped shoulders. YIKES!) He was nothing like the wheel chair bound, masked, groggy, painfully frail person that had been presented over the last couple years of his life.

Whether you're a fan of his or not the movie is well worth watching on many different levels.

God bless you MJ and may you rest in peace.

Re. Brad | November 2, 2009 6:58 PM:

"People in other countries love Michael Jackson because" they don't believe he molested any children, and they don't buy American media.

It is all clear to people in other countries, free of the American black-and-white divide, that MJ bashing is racially motivated.

stella | November 2, 2009 8:24 PM

I wish MJ had come to Australia to live,we would have loved him unconditionally, you guys in the US are so judgemental and racist, something he fought against all his life.leave the mongering behind, and do yourself a favour watch this film, really watch and listen, his was the kindest, sweetest soul and he was a genius that will remain unsurpassed in our life time.

His #1 Fan | November 2, 2009 8:10 PM

Thank God that Michael has been vindicated.

The charges made against him were false and can be blamed for destroying his life. A lot of people will pay dearly. This was a noble, decent, loving human being, incapable of harming anyone. The accusations were despicable and managed to fool so many people....sad.

Think, people. Do you think that the All-powerful Creator would let this man's memory and legacy enjoy this tremendous success of being #1 all over the world once again???

This is a testament to his innocence. He has been vindicated. We lost an Angel of Music. We are very fortunate to have shared the space and time with him.

God Bless you, Michael. Sleep in peace now....

I am really disappointed in the comments I have read so far. I am a 31 year old middle class conservative republican and have seen the Michael Jackson movie two times already and can't wait to see it again. I watch Fox News and I hate to tell you but Fox News is THE ONLY network that had someone defending Michael Jackson throughout his ordeal (thank you Geraldo) I love Michael Jackson and am sad he never got to pull off the best concert ever :) I was not suprised (although disappointed) when he was going to do his concert in London. They LOVE Michael over there.

Lana | November 2, 2009 7:56 PM

What kept me away?

I'm not a fan. I have never been.

As you can see from the comments, the same people are watching the movie over, and over again; which means most of the nation is not interested. As for being huge overseas, are you kidding me? You really think 68 million is huge? There are billon+ people in China alone. They were expecting 250 million+ in the first five days. I doubt it will make that in its whole run, even whith his fans watching it over and over again.

shanny chell | November 2, 2009 7:55 PM

I will tell you it takes alot to get me to a movie theater, the last time I went was to take my daughter to see lion king, but I could not miss This is it, it was sooo good I saw it twice this weekend and am going next weekend to see it at IMAX

Michael Jackson Fan | November 2, 2009 7:06 PM

I am from the states and I watched it twice with my family, to support Michael's vision. So for those who didn't see it missed something that was pure genius. There will NEVER be another Michael Jackson. Open your eyes, this man fought for great causes.

It's easier to read the headlines rather than the fine print which is why so many people still believe he was guilty even though is more evidence that proves that both families were nothing but money grubbing liars.

Miley is awesome and she doesn't molest children so I am glad she reigns over Michael Jackson. And for the record, Miley's concert film was such a musical and visual masterpiece that it should be number one!!

I saw This Is It today - I thought it was amazing - so is he. He had so much energy, his dancing was incredible. He had so much conflict in his life, living under a microscope from 6 yrs. old. I don't know how he stood it. He was a musical genious - sometimes gifted people are misunderstood. I'm really sorry he died - especially for his children. I hope everyone who sees this movie will leave with a better understanding of a man through so many personal strggles, really tried to make a difference in the world. I wish more people could do the same.

what a movie i thoroughly enjoyed it. im so glad that the rest of the world and some real US fans loved michael the entire time. it was only the rest of the US and its stupid opinions and love of media/scandal that did not. the rest of the world is clearly smarter than the US. whats really stupid about the US is that its the main one trying to put him down, and he is idolized in every other country, im especially happy it shattered hannah montanas record (most sales for a concert doc ever, not anymore!) the true fans in the US went to go see the movie, my whole family went on opening night and i expect to see it again this week in IMAX. and 103 million worldwide! thats blockbuster numbers there! "This Is It" is right up there with "Woodstock" and "The Song Remains the Same" as best concert documentaries ive seen

I saw the movie on Saturday and I love it ( I have to see it again). Michael Jackson is the biggest entertainer of all time. You are very biased on your review. $21 million in 5 days in the U.S and over $100 million worldwide! That's so great! This is to show you that the people from all over the world LOVE MJ. He knows that. That's why he chose to do his last concert tour in London instead of the U.S.

WE LOVE YOU MICHAEAL, YOU ROCK.

YOU ARE THE KING OF POP.

Sorry, for the haters.

While 'This is It' is a great movie, I dont believe the concerts he was planning had anything on his past tours. I felt that the atmosphere of the concert was kind of cold and sad. The set list had bearly changed from the HIStory or Dangerous one and the props and choreography were identical. I'm when the props and lighting were added and the moves were perfected it would have been a good show, but I just didn't feel a wow factor this time round.

A good rokumentary- Truth or Dare and Gimme Shelter

Saw This is It 3 times and I'm going for my fourth time on Wednesday. M.J. seems so alive in this film. Everytime I watch it I do not want it to end because then it confirms even more that we have lost such an inspiration in the music world. After I watch, I say to myself...what do we have to look forward to now?? Long live the King!!

BlindMan | November 2, 2009 6:12 PM

There is a subculture in America that is in general is stuck “cynic’s cool”
In this way MJ and “This is It” is an easy target for the insecure.
Both the NY times and LA times are afraid to claim MJ film has any real merit.
Claiming that only “foreigners” made it a hit. (sounds a little racist to me)
Although both papers will promote any half baked menial obscure violent tinged flick
to reaffirm they’ve still got “the cool.”
It is easier to knock something than it is to like something. (kind of like Fox News)

Please use your own mind and judge for yourself.
“This is It” is an honest look into the affirmative about MJ.
His talent, energy, vision and positive messages.
(With great songs like, Man in the Mirror, Black and White…MJ spreads the message similar to The Beatles…both reminding us what is really important in this life…LOVE)

DANIEL | November 2, 2009 6:12 PM

I loved the movie.

Most Americans do not believe the lies and the garbage from the press. That's why the movie is number one.

Unfortunately some are jerks. But these idiots are the minority.

"This is It" is extraordinary.

matthew | November 2, 2009 6:09 PM

haven't seen the MJ film. i'm sure it's good and i'm glad his fans have one final sovenier ... but i agree with Travers on his picks. i think Elvis: That's The Way It Is is the best rock doc i've seen - probably a lot like This Is It but we get to see the final show after the rehearsals which are amazing. just seeing Elvis mix and mash up Little Sister/Get Back in the studio with his band is worth the price of admission alone... and Polk Salad Annie is fucking unstoppable. Stop Making Sense was unbelievable as well.

Vanessa | November 2, 2009 6:05 PM

i feel saddend for the people who bash Michael and are super negative and feel they know all the facts and judge him. if u watch Michael and This is It you will know the truth. He is truly a gentle heart and soul and he could never harm anyone. Thats another reason why he so easily gets taken advantage of by manipulative money hungry jerks who dont care for the well being of humanity and of their souls.
This movie is inspiring and beautiful and for those who don't watch it....ur really missing out on what our earth and society needs....beautiful people who spread love and knowledge of us needing to save our planet.

Thank you, John, for the insight. You made a good point in your write-up. Wow, you sould like an avid fan. Good for you. Will see This Is It again this weekend for the 4th time. In Canada, Calgary, Alberta, we don't really care too much about all those scandals, true or false, we're not all that interested. MJ is an amazing performer, he facsinated the world with his dance moves and vocals, that's all there is to it. I like to think that I'm his #1 fan in Calgary. I'm retired & I can do whatever I want.

poyee | November 2, 2009 5:32 PM

Saw This Is It 3 times. Enjoyed it. We're from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In the states, there's a lot of unemployment, so people who are laid off just couldn't afford to go to movies. Every penny counts. Over time, people will go, don't worry. This is the closest thing to a real concert. I'll go again once a week, for as long as the theatre plays it. I'm retired & at a point that I could afford to go to movies every week. No mortgage no work stress, Just enjoying retirement. Oh, This Is It song is good, especially the orchestra one. Really good.

Ash | November 2, 2009 5:28 PM

Dude!! The movie was AWESOME!!! I saw it 6 times. I saw the premier here in Bermuda and then flew to NYC to see it 4 times and then again last night. It felt like seeing him in a real concert and it felt like he was still alive.

John | November 2, 2009 5:28 PM

Ahh you have to love those who don't understand the way Michael Jackson's is released. He's always taken long gaps in between music releases; check the release dates of his albums. Dangerous was '91 HIStory was '95 and Invincible as '01 and Number Ones with One More Chance was released in '03. In between ’03 and ’05 he kind of was caught up in that whole fighting for his life and proving he didn’t abuse children thing. Then in ’08 he released the #1 multiplatinum, Thriller 25 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Thriller. He was about due for another album this year, and it would have been released this year when the sold-out This Is It shows got underway. Michael Jackson has always been relevant, his most recent album Invincible debuted at number one all over the world including in America, and You Rock My World was his billionth top 10 hit and Butterflies that followed it was #2 on Billboard's chart without an official release. The problem was Invincible got caught in the middle of a disagreement between Sony and Michael Jackson and in spite of that performed extremely well. If you don't know the facts or the artist’s history, be quiet. You sound foolish. Once you're an established artist like Michael Jackson you don't have to churn out an album every year and a half to stay relevant. Not only is Michael Jackson very relevant, he always has been, quite possibly more than any other musical act in history because I have to say I don’t know ho many artist reference having Elvis or The Beatles as inspiration in their music and I don’t know how many times they are referenced in pop culture in TV shows and so on, for God’s sake Cory on That’s So Raven, Moonwalks on the intro. If a fool stays quiet, you never have any idea how foolish they are. All hail the King.

mary | November 2, 2009 5:28 PM

Finally, finally, finally MJ is getting the acknowledgment for his work that he deserves! People were so cruel to him over the child molestation charges.... of which he was acquitted. I plan to see the movie sometime this week. I am so happy to see that globally it is succeeding .... it is sad that it took his death for a lot of people to appreciate his talent and genius....

Janet - Canada | November 2, 2009 5:25 PM

I saw "This Is It" twice this weekend and will probably see it a third time with another friend. In some ways, it wasn't that great. But, in other ways it was fantastic. At my second viewing it received a round of applause from the audience!

In his personal life, MJ was different and by no means perfect. I think the poor showing in the USA was a combination of them being wrapped-up in themselves, and him not being the conforming and artificial public figure they like to support.

For new and old fans of MJ, I think it's worth the view at the box office. It's a very rare insight into his work life, and portrays him in a positive light. He was confident, very involved in all aspects of the process, and excited to be performing again. He was in his element!

I agree with Melissa that had he displayed this level of confidence off the stage, things would have been very different for him.

With respect to best concert ... This Wasn't It ... but it could have been!

lg | November 2, 2009 5:18 PM

Sadly, it proves once again how brainwashed and uneducated most americans are.

Since most of them are just "Headlines readers" they have drank the tabloids kool-aid over the years and can't bother to do real research on their own, like reading a factual book like Michael Jackson Conspiracy or watch a factual documentary like The Untold Story of Neverland etc etc.
They're also too proud of their stupidity to change their mind.
The rest of the world knows not to scratch their heads anymore about what pathetic americans do or think.

Naomi | November 2, 2009 5:16 PM

I saw the movie and Michael Jackson, at 50 almost 51, still had lots of energy, his dances and his voice, just game me and my mom goose bumps. He was such a great performer. RIP Michael

Chris | November 2, 2009 5:16 PM

I'm huge fan of Peter Travers, and pretty much take whatever he says as the religious truth, but I'm just wondering Mr. Travers, did you give "This Is It" 3.5 out of 4 because you felt an obligation by working for a music magazine? From what I've heard, it just isn't up to snuff. I think another contributing factor as to why American's didn't see the film, was because much of MJ's life (including live performance footage) was drilled into our heads for weeks on our cable news networks. This movie may have been more successful on the anniversary of MJ's death rather than so soon proceeding it.

I Love MJ | November 2, 2009 5:15 PM

I saw THIS IS IT three (3) times since it came out midnight Tuesday night. I would have seen it Sat or Sun, but I have kids and we did the Halloween thing on Sat and a birthday party on Sunday. Other distractions include the World Series, the beginning of basketball season here in the US and college football/pro football. Who has to stay home and watch the kids while our husbands are into the sports stuff going on!

The US does not appreciate the talent and qualities of Michael. There is a reason why he has not toured the US since 1989 and why SONY did not promote HIStory, Blood on the Dance Floor and Invincible here. Now that he is gone, all the damage has already been done. The media has damaged his reputation without cause. He is presumed guilty because it sells papers and magazines. I am going to see it again because I appreciate Michael and have since I was 10 years old. I miss him and wish that others could see and feel what I do when I hear him sing. If you miss the movie, you are missing out.

Em | November 2, 2009 5:13 PM

Everyone that hems and haws about going to the This Is It movie, think again. Surprise yourself. It is actually quite amazing. The concerts would have been jaw dropping; the effects were superb, the dancers top notch and Michael Jackson was sounding and dancing pretty darn good for someone that's been out of the picture for so many years, not to mention 50 years old. As for the "old" music, it's still fresh and he did state that he would be performing the music the fans want to hear. That was the mandate. It's a good movie, well worth the ticket price and, who knows, you might just walk out with a whole new perspective.

Corey | November 2, 2009 5:12 PM

If you dont like MJ I really reccommend you see this. Im not a MJ fan but thought this was unreal! I never knew he was so down to earth and funny. His moves were wicked and his voice sounded better than a lot of his album originals. was really expecting to hate this but i now have a new found respect for the man. You need to see the movie to understand. really glad i got taken to see it

Angela | November 2, 2009 5:08 PM

In my city people just wont go cause there is nothing scandalous about this movie, they know for the reviews that MJ looks great, in great shape, all singing and dancing, so they cant take it that they judge him so badly and now theyre all proven wrong. Thats why they avoided the movie, at least for the people Ive met.

Diana | November 2, 2009 5:07 PM

I have been following MJ since he first started, as the Jackson 5 cartoon. I have been a huge fan. I saw the movie and want to see it again. At 50, and he still had all that energy. He was just incredible. No matter what anybody says:, He is the King of Pop.

KateIsAmoron | November 2, 2009 5:03 PM

Kate - to call a music genius who had single-handedly changed the landscape of the history of pop music something as what you claim as "not culturally relevant for the past 15 years" is clearly nothing more than an astronomic clutter of stupidity that's been pulled out of your biased a s s. And to say that you'd rather see the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus' films, just confirms your low mental fortitude. Go back to school you colossal moron

wee | November 2, 2009 5:02 PM

I went to This Is It three time this weekend. I watched two time IMAX which I loved the most. The sound and picture in the IMAX was awesome. One time in the regular theater. Michael is a true Legend and Genius. Not to mention people around world love Michael, not Miley... Michael is bigger than any other star.... Michael, we love you and F%$#k all those haters. Hell no to watch the Hannah Montana...

Alexandria | November 2, 2009 4:54 PM

I've seen it once, but I do want to see it again. I have never been a huge MJ fan but the movie was fucking great. Say what you want about his personal life, but the man was a genius and this movie proves that further.

I expected the movie to be badly put together because it was obviously made to make money but I was definitely wrong. Very, very good. It's a shame that ignorant people like Kate will be missing out on such a good movie.

The US court PROVED that there is NOTHING =ZERO=NADA evidence to prove that Michael did anything to the accusers, the court with ALL WHITE jury found Michael NOT guilty of ALL charges against him!

Thus proving that all these FALSE charges are just EXTORTION to get money from Michael! Proving that CHANDLERS and ARVIZOS are money-hungry, GREEDY extortionists!

Given the “Balloon Boy” hoax, GREEDY parents will corrupt their OWN children and forced them to lie to get MONEY and fame!

I have seen the movie twice and I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend going to see it. You will be very surprised to discover that it is really amazing. You will leave the theater very glad that you went to see This Is It. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars because it is so good.

I saw this is it twice this weekend. I am a huge Michael fan. I feel that the movie was just what I needed. I needed to see him and hear his magical voice. I am just shocked at how we treat our celebs here. We must remember they are people just as we are. I will always love Michael Jackson and his music. This Is It, is the best I've seen at the theater all year. I saw it twice and I want to see it again. I should win something big. It is the first of it's kind, isn't it? If not, then it is the best of it's kind and so it should win big.

I went to go see the movie and I will tell you it is the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was something real and left me wanting more. It’s sad that He didn’t show that confidence level in real life he would have still been here and not labeled as the weirdo. I think he is the most hard working and loving man out there. As far as the Child molestation charges goes I think he got the bad rap and for a Father to take a 20 million dollar settlement when there child has been violated is the biggest piece of crap out there. That is how I know MJ didn’t do it! They were in it for the money. The second case was another Low life parent trying to get rich at there child’s expense. RIP MJ!

I'd watch Hanna Montana or the Jonas Brothers concert films before seeing anything with Pedo Pan in it.

Best concert movies:

Elvis: That's The Way It Is

Elvis on Tour (Golden Globe winner)

U2:

Rolling Stones

and pretty much any concert movie that went out and held it's own against the slate of movies also released

not this bogus flaying of the concrete encased corpse who's not been culturally relevant for over 15 years

kinda like the Grammy year where they nominated all his songs in all the categories and gave him a lifetime award to ensure a record win year was set for him

undeservedly.

Beastie Boys --- Awesome! I F*&^in' Shot That!

Peter for once I agree with you on a movie. Loved This Is It. Have recently become an MJ fan and am getting to enjoy his music. This was a remarkable look at an entertainer and an artist who still had it despite the difficulties and scandals. If you are an MJ fan, you'll love it, If you're not and you see this, you'll become a fan.

Terri | November 2, 2009 4:20 PM

Oh, aren't you all cynical and jaded. How very Rolling Stone-reader of you. Whether or not the music is "old" or not is certainly not the point of this film. This is a cultural phenomenon in a different light than people have ever seen him - one that shows him to be driven and talented and actually kind of normal - and most importantly, down to business. No scandal, no salaciousness here. It's easy to forget the media circus when you're watching such electric talent. Nothing about his singing, his dancing was old. In fact, the songs that were old didn't seem old at all. They seemed new and fresh and re-imagined. This movie is full of LIFE and is more concert than documentary.

Are you kidding me? What kept me away from a movie of rehearsals for a concert that never happened? First of all, the person in question is someone who has been repeatedly accused of child molestations. He hadn't released a decent song in 15 years. His death has been over reported for most of this year. Quite frankly, I can go the rest of my life without hearing or seeing Michael Jackson. I would go a "Damn You, Hollywood!" for not releasing any other movie this week than this half-baked documentary of a movie.

MJ died, everybody paid tribute by buying his old music. But the truth is, it's old music. A new performance of old music is still not more interesting to me than the old performances of it. This movie is 20 years too late.

I wanted to see what people were saying about "This Is It" before I went to go see it, so I plan on paying my respects to the King of Pop sometime this week. Not that I thought it looked bad, I just wanted to make sure (since college kids are strapped for cash). As far as best rock concert film, for my money, I would go with "U2: Rattle and Hum." I've never seen "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" performed with such angst and intensity as it is in this film. That performance alone makes the film worth watching, and they do so much more.

Matt | November 2, 2009 11:59 AM

Just not a huge MJ fan, probably because of the scandals, and then the saturated coverage of his death, and then a movie only months after his death? And didn't you mention this was a movie to avoid in a RS issue for your fall preview Mr. Travers? I typically agree with your movie choices, so that in itself made the movie fall off my radar.

Alex | November 2, 2009 11:36 AM

I went and saw Paranormal Activity this weekend instead of This Is It. That was my third time seeing Paranormal Activity. It's not that I have any issue with This Is It, I'm just not going to pay theater price to see a documentary film. And I don't think I'm alone there. Also, the Halloween weekend release was pretty stupid.
