With the opening next week of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (advance review: it’s a beauty —fierce, funny and haunting), my thoughts turn to the other characters in the movies (and books) besides Harry. The different posters for the movie (see below) show the mix of characters. There’s only one more of J.K. Rowling’s 7 HP books to film — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. So this is a good time to pick the most valuable player in the Potter barn besides its leading man. Here are my four fave contenders for MVP. Feel free to pick yours.
(Plus, check out photos from the Harry Potter set here.)
Ron Weasley. As played with open-faced exuberance by Rupert Grint, the ginger-haired Ron is Harry’s best friend and true confidant. He’s not as expert in wizardry or Quidditch as Harry, which causes some resentment and makes Ron raucous comic relief. The love potion he takes in Half-Blood Prince brings Ron’s immature likability to the fore.
Hermione Granger. As played with fragility and a tough core by Emma Watson, the uber-smart, Muggle-born Hermione is the character author Rowling based partly on her own awkward youth. There are still some who wish Hermione would hook up with Harry. But it’s Ron who has Hermione’s heart and in the final chapter — spoiler alert — they kiss and then some.
Draco Malfoy. As played by Tom Felton (at his best in Half-Blood Prince), Draco is the bully with the white-blond hair, the symbol of intolerance who thinks wannabe wizards born of Muggles don’t deserve a shot at a magical education. Watch the way Felton deftly layers the role with vulnerability as the series continues.
Severus Snape. As played by Alan Rickman who turns a sneer into an acting tour de force, Potions prof Severus comes into his own as the Potter franchise reaches its climax. J.K. Rowling called Severus her favorite character to write and personally chose Rickman for the role. Watching the British actor develop the role is one of the true pleasures of the series.

For the reasons the author listed, I believe that those characters are all marvellous choices, absolutely.
I have a couple other favorites. I think it's unanimous that everybody enjoyed Jim Broadbent, who OWNED Slughorn. Evanna Lynch is unwaveringly Luna. Gambon's Dumbledore has mellowed considerably, making him (happy surprise or many) much more akin to the canon Dumbledore we all know and love.
Ginny is played very nicely by Bonnie Wright- gentle or firm whenever necessary, and sort of a second voice of reason for when Hermione is too neurotic. :)
Vellos | August 4, 2009 6:54 AM
I totally pick Severus Snape as my favourite character! His character is one that has great depth and his tragic past which would be showed in the next book would really appeal to me.
Plus, Alan Rickman is playing the role, and I mean, come on. It's THE Alan Rickman. One of the sexiest guys with his very entrancing baritone voice, one cannot restraint herself when she listens to him. I go all dazy and relaxed when I see him and hear him.
<3 Severus and Alan!!
Bernie | July 25, 2009 8:34 AM
Alan Rickman is terrific as
Severus Snape, and second place goes to Emma Watson as Hermione.
IM | July 25, 2009 5:29 AM
Tom Felton's Draco was the breakout character from this movie. He showcased Draco's maturity, solemnity, vulnerability and sense of danger.
Javier | July 20, 2009 3:04 PM
If you're talking about the franchise as a whole, it's a really tough call. I'd say that Tom Felton wins by a hair, just because of the character development that has taken place with Malfoy.
If you're talking about the 6th movie, The clear star is Helena Bonham Carter. The few scenes she was in totally made the movie. Whether she was whispering into somebody's ear or shrieking like a maniac, she embraced her role and gave a chilling performance.
Samar | July 20, 2009 5:00 AM
Dan is great actor. He's the best.
zoelyw | July 20, 2009 4:52 AM
SNAPE FOR ME!!!
Go ALAN RICKMAN!...
BEST MAN for the ROLE!
KW | July 20, 2009 12:37 AM
Snape...easily Snape. Don't get me wrong, I love all the characters, but Snape is just too damn interesting to not top my list. Plus, as has been mentioned with great enthusiasm before...it's Alan fucking Rickman...the man rules.
Vega123 | July 18, 2009 11:48 AM
Alan Rickman is always great, but Ralp Fienes is the best when he shows up as Voldermort
gaurav | July 18, 2009 2:12 AM

John K | July 17, 2009 4:40 PM
Alan Rickman is by far the best actor of the series due to his experience and incredible performances in every movie, and how he has made the role his own... But I also think that it has been fun to watch the other three become better actors and and get more comfortable with their roles. For the most recent movie, I think that Jim Broadbent was the perfect choice as Professor Slughorn as well.
DecemberNight | July 17, 2009 5:53 AM
Severus Snape AKA Alan fucking Rickman!
metoo | July 16, 2009 11:41 PM
Draco, Draco, Draco!
Azlin | July 15, 2009 11:06 PM
Tom Felton 100% He broke out and made everyone, even the Malfoy haters, sympathize with Draco Malfoy! He made him vulnerable yet strong and pulled everything from the character in the book and put it on screen. He played the part brilliantly and he deserves heaps of recognition for this. The last scene in the Astronomy tower... wow.
Severus | July 15, 2009 10:50 PM
M.V.P.,.....?
How very touching.
Audrey | July 15, 2009 7:49 PM
Rupert Grint basically owned this movie. Finally, after years of his lines being taken by Emma's Hermione, he was in the spotlight; and he did not fail. He was absolutely wonderful.
Shiloh | July 15, 2009 5:55 PM
Most definitely Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. He makes the character of Snape come alive and his acting is superb. Severus Snpae is a complicated character and they couldnt have picked a better actor to play this part. I cant wait for the next two films so i can experience more of this excellent acting.
Laura | July 15, 2009 5:11 PM
It has got to be Tom Felton. He is an a brilliant actor, and I really felt truely sorry for Draco in the HBP.
Emily | July 15, 2009 10:33 AM
Alan Rickman is absolutely spectacular in his portrayal of Snape. Not only is his fabulous actor but he brings out all the excentricities that are Snape. I could not imagine anyone else playing this character at this point and can't wait for the last two films where everything for Snape comes full circle. I know Rickman will make my favorite part in all of the books absoulutely amazing.
3catgirl | July 14, 2009 6:45 PM
I am so envious of these kids. They have worked with the leading lights of British theater and film, made comfortable fortunes and have incredible careers ahead of them (if they so choose). Rupert Grint is MVP. He's a natural comedian which I suspect will allow him to shift to straight drama (should he so choose) and still be amazingly viable.
jesi | July 14, 2009 5:14 PM
Rupert Grint has always been the franchise's best treat! He plays Ron Weasley spot on!
Veronica | July 13, 2009 4:24 PM
Alan Rickman is pretty amazing as Snape, as he is in every movie he does; but my love is with Tom Felton as Malfoy. He is sexy.
Paul | July 13, 2009 3:52 PM
Although he is gone...I think richard harris as Dumbledore was the best.
brendon | July 13, 2009 2:01 PM
Emma(hermonie) is an outstanding actress. She plays her character so well.and she is beutiful.
Jeanette | July 12, 2009 10:34 PM
definitely DRACO MALFOY!!!! tom felton plays that character so well, he is the MVP for me all the way. <3 malfoy!!
hello! | July 12, 2009 4:10 PM
I love them all, but I think that Alan Rickman as Snape is the best. He is the greatest embodiment of snape that could possibly exist... he is so funny and evil to watch!!! he is true to the book, and a fantastic character.
Yaya | July 12, 2009 11:43 AM
My poor dear Severus<3 I love him! Is the best character in all the books and films!!!
Kahlan | July 11, 2009 11:31 PM
How can you possibly pick? They are all amazing actors! Can the whole cast be MVP's? LOL!
Hawk-i-69 | July 11, 2009 8:39 PM
I think ruchard harris as Dumbledore. He played the role with such restraint, as if every word and movement was specificaly chosen. Really made the big D seem like the legend he is in the books
CaptainBear | July 11, 2009 7:25 PM
Gary oldman as Serius black is amazing. He is the true sage and motivator to Harry throughout the movies. His part was brilliantly crafted and his complexity is onsurpassed by Oldman's acting ability.
mishael | July 10, 2009 8:55 PM
Snape is my vote for MVP. The Harry Potter franchise was my introduction to Alan Rickman's acting, and now he's my favorite actor. (I've seen about 40 of his screen roles.) His portrayal of Snape hooked me on the films AND the books. Rickman's performance really brought out the mystery and depth of the character, making these qualities apparent from the first film. My interest was definitely piqued even then, and his performance has drawn me in deeper with each film.
Stuart | July 10, 2009 7:23 PM
hey! why wasnt ralph fiennes mentioned here. he gave so much intensity to voldemorts role. if u thought voldemort was evil in the books, then u better take a closer look to the on on screen.
anyway, i also like to say that david yates finnaly gave that dark and almost gothic feeling that was missing from the first 2 potters. the third is still my favorite (superbly directed by mexican genius Alfonso Cuaron), but that may change because of this better looking installment. Yates, harry potter is in your hands.
p.s: what about dumbledore??!!!
chris | July 10, 2009 5:15 PM
Snape will be great in the last 3 movies... i also think Prof. McGonagall should be mentioned... and lets not forget Raeph Feinnes (killed it in that battle with Dumbledore)
Also I like Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix LeStrange in her brief role.
Maddi | July 10, 2009 5:00 PM
Personally, I think every single actor has shown amazing character work, and they've done the impossible - made the movies based off of books enjoyable. The plot of these books is always destroyed by the screenplays, so one must then focus on the acting, and these actors truly shine new light on every single character. I honestly don't have a favorite - I think they're all bloody brilliant.
peace and love
Librasmile | July 10, 2009 4:35 PM
Severus Snape of course. I've read the entire series and his story arc is amazing! The character is also blessed with being portrayed by the great (and too frequently underrated) Alan Rickman. I always say expecting Alan Rickman to steal a scene is like expecting a fighter jet to be fast. It's inevitable, like the laws of physics, lol.
I can't help but believe that had Rowling been writing grown up literature rather than (an admittedly excellent) children's story, Severus Snape would have been the main character. While the rest of the story can be considered somewhat Dickensian, Snape's story is rather Shakespearian and, as those Snape fans who've read the entire series might attest, just a bit of a missed opportunity.
Forrest | July 10, 2009 4:28 PM
I have loved Rickman's Snape since the first time I saw the first movie. Brilliant casting! Rickman plays the character with such relish. I enjoy the story line, but a constant subplot for me is what will Rickman, as Snape, do next, and how will he render the character.
joe | July 10, 2009 4:22 PM
harry potter should be the one mvp because without him there is no one greater and he defeats the dark lord all the time
Marsea | July 10, 2009 2:00 PM
Alan Rickman is pretty amazing as Snape, as he is in every movie he does; but my love is with Tom Felton as Malfoy. He looks really tormented in what I have seen of this film, and that's exactly what Draco Malfoy should be. He is not evil, he is a product of an evil family.
SnapesRose | July 10, 2009 1:21 PM
Only.. One name.. for me...
SEVERUS SNAPE!!!!!
Right from the start, in 2000 when I started to read the books!
hbnub | July 10, 2009 11:46 AM
Honorable mention to Jason Isaacs, does Haughty Sneering Despicable Guy extremely well.
hpnub | July 10, 2009 11:43 AM
Probably not as big a fan as some, never read a single book and was not planning on seeing a single film until the gf made me, but I was pleasantly surprised, enjoyed them each more than the last as I watched the series and caught up to this point. Not knowing how they're portrayed in the books I HAVE to say Rickman owns everything he ever does, and is a perfect casting choice for this role seems like. I like Gambon very much but I've gotta say Oldman and Fiennes make the movies what they are even with their limited screen time. The kids... are kids, they're growing up to be quite talented and of the three the girl is by far the best actor. I imagine she'll have quite a career. But yeah... can't beat these old pros, some of the very best in the business.
Steve | July 10, 2009 10:56 AM
Hans Fucking Gruber
Maureen | July 10, 2009 10:21 AM
Tom Felton and Rupert Grint for me! Draco's role in this sixth book was absolutely incredible, very complex. I can't wait to see how it'll look like on film! A good story needs a villain, and Draco (who unfortunately is a product of his rather dark surroundings) becomes one of those villains in the series, albeit I don't think willingly. And it doesn't matter what the movie is, but everyone loves the super-loyal best friend (remember Sam Gamgee in Lord of the Rings?). That's what make Ron Weasley such a great character: compared to others, he seems just ordinary. But it's his fierce allegiance and loyalty to Harry that makes him extra-ordinary! :)
P.S. That jawline on Tom Fenton... good Lord!
HelloJackToad | July 10, 2009 6:50 AM
Why are fantasy films always populated by private school knobheads? Let's see lads off a Leeds council estate beat seven shades of $hit out of a goblin!
Nick Bridwell | July 10, 2009 1:39 AM
Gary Oldman rocks
JP | July 9, 2009 11:37 PM
As someone who isn't a fan of "Harry Potter" books (I have seen all the movies on cable. Mainly, out of curiousity to understand what my co-workers are talking about.), I have to say Alan Rickman as Snape is the MVP. The only character I can think of that can bring menace to the screen even when he is helping the hero. I've been told that half-blood prince refers to Snape in the upcoming movie. So, I might actually check it out in the theater.
I actually have a soft spot for the frisky ghost that gives Harry Potter advice in each movie. It's always a cameo that I look forward to in each movie. That character does give the movies a much needed adult wink to keep from being too kiddie.
yeah | July 9, 2009 11:33 PM
when people heard rickman was cast was arguably the top "perfect casting" epiphany any film lover had ever, even if they didn't love the books.
Eden | July 9, 2009 11:16 PM
Alan Rickman does it for me. Good actor and the I dont think any one can do Snape like he can. And the sexy voice helps.
Carla | July 9, 2009 9:07 PM
Alan Rickman's Snape is so perfectly suited that I almost hate to say this, but I think Jason Isaacs who portrays the despicable Lucias Malfoy could have done Snape nearly as well as Rickman.
Emma's Hermoine and Rubert's Ron are my favorites from all the movies. But all of the characters are important and they are all well acted.
duh | July 9, 2009 9:01 PM
Next Movie in que...
Harry Potter Gets His AARP Card.
Andrew G | July 9, 2009 8:03 PM
Emma Watson or Alan Rickman; they really are both amazing and have embodied their characters better than anyone else.
Jonathan | July 9, 2009 4:46 PM
This is a tough one, but i'm going with Alan Rickman's Snape for MVP. Love Grint as Ron and Watson as Hermione, but Rickman (right behind Michael Gambon and Dan Radcliffe) owns every scene he's in.
And allow me to make a prediction: Rickman and Gambon receive Oscar nods for Deathly Hallows part II. Anyone who's read part 7 and understand how emotionally complex the last few chapters are will immediately understand why.
Kenny | July 9, 2009 4:11 PM
lordbean, you are exactly right. Gambon as Dumbledore is perfect. He's a great actor and plays Dubledore with such great nuances. I really enjoyed Richard Harris as Dumbledore as well, but it honestly seems that Gambon brings a lot more to the table. Sirius is a great candidate as well.
It really is awesome to see the series become more complex as the series progresses. Which is to be expected, but I think the films are turning to be just as influential as the books are in artistic terms.
CrystalSpyder4 | July 9, 2009 1:38 PM
Gotta give props to Snape...at least in the movie!
When reading the first several books, I honestly didn't have much high regard for Snape as a villain. He seemed to be without any real charisma or presence..not much more than an annoyance--a supervillain wannabe.
Viewing the first film changed all that. I'll be the first one to say I'm no judge of acting, but there was no denying that Alan Rickman transformed and redefined the character of Snape. When he is onscreen, he commands your attention, deftly delivering his sneered dialogue with the cautious, deliberate detail of an artist...my friend whispered to me after Snape's first scene, "He's like a rock star!" While this statement may prove cliched in most cases, in Richman's performance, it as absolutely appropriate.
Can't wait to see what direction Rickman takes his performance in. As HP readers know, there are many new revelations forthcoming about Severus that will hopefully take on new magnitude on the big screen.
Kari | July 9, 2009 1:35 PM
As important as all of these characters are in their own ways, I think Ron is the most vital to Harry's growth as a character and as a young man. He befriended him first. His loyalty is beyond measure. Also, through him, Harry gains the unconditional love of a family that he had been missing his whole life up until the point he meets Ron. That support becomes so important to Harry's ability to face his destiny. Without Ron, Harry would never have made it.
Pheonix200 | July 9, 2009 11:25 AM
I feel bad 4 snape to he loved Lily Potter and he was on Voldemort's side pretending, he is looking like a bad guy in the movies and in the book he really isn't a bad guy. Lots of people are gonna b confused 'cause they didn't read the book in the fricken first place!
Pheonix200 | July 9, 2009 11:21 AM
I luv the Golden trio, so i would say Ron(Rupert) and Hermione(Emma) and they look good as a couple.
Go Dumbledore's Army!!!
Also, Tom ain't so bad either.

the whole cast is amazing but Prof. Snape is just awesome....luv him ........
bocabozo | July 9, 2009 2:37 AM
For me it has to be Snape - not only the most complex and interesting figure in the series - what Alan Rickman does here that is the high art of acting... he is chewing the scenery with the little he gets, every word and every sentence is measured and with the rise of an eyebrow he can substitute half a page of dialogue - he owns Snape.
But also kudos to the youngsters, they growing up to be fine actors!
Sam | July 9, 2009 2:34 AM
SNAPE!!
Carmen | July 9, 2009 1:27 AM
Rupert for me! Or I should say Ron Weasley is my KING! :D
Katie | July 9, 2009 12:30 AM
Snape. Rickman's portrayal is the most loyal to the character in the books. He plays the character exactly as I imagined he would be. And his character in the book is so complex, emotional, and hilarious that no one can top him.
But after him, Hermione. She does save Harry and Ron so many times it's ridiculous and she never gets a thanks. And she kicks ass.
Mary Poppins | July 8, 2009 11:44 PM
snape
Cassandra | July 8, 2009 11:34 PM
Snape. Rickman is a marvel.
Pattie | July 8, 2009 11:26 PM
Ron Weasley aka Rupert Grint can bend my wand any which way he wants!!! Rupert is brilliant and it's about time they let him shine.
anna | July 8, 2009 11:10 PM
luvv Ron!!! he's awesome. such a great person who i think really shines when his insecurities show through.
i do luv ginny and luna too, 'specially luna!!
Georgie | July 8, 2009 11:10 PM
I personally like all of them, but I like Ron the best. He's played brilliantly by Rupert Grint, I can't WAIT to see HBP with his love scene in it. From the looks of the trailers and clips, Jessie Cave looks good too.
And although Snape isn't my favorite character--Alan Rickman is TOTALLY WICKED at playing him! And also Michael Gambon, I think, will be brilliant in this movie.
gerknightlady | July 8, 2009 11:05 PM
I love Seveus Snape, the man gave his whole life to help Harry and wasn't appreciated.
Ashley | July 8, 2009 11:05 PM
Alan Rickman is a brilliant actor and he has my vote, though it is a shame Luna isn't in the poll as well. Its all for the best I suppose as I would than be torn between my two favorite characters.
Liz | July 8, 2009 11:03 PM
I agree with Me - my favourite from the books are Fred and George Weasley. In the movie - I still love those guys (they just don't get enough screen time), Snape would be at the top of the list - Rickman is so perfect for the role: he layers it beautifully. Then I would have to say Oldman as Sirius Black. Oldman was just wonderful as Harry's Godfather.
Rose | July 8, 2009 10:57 PM
Lord Voldemort all the way!
katie | July 8, 2009 10:51 PM
hands down its ron. they are all great characters, but he wins by just a bit.
Jen | July 8, 2009 10:49 PM
Hands down, Rickman as Snape is fantastic. He IS Snape; vicious but tortured by something at the same time. Everyone else is great, but Rickman is pure joy to watch (catch him in "Dogma" if you have not before).
Nyx | July 8, 2009 10:21 PM
It's all between Ron, Snape, & Draco.
Ron: Personally, I don't think Ron gets enough credit at all; he's only used for comic relief. But Ron is such an important character & Rupert Grint plays him wonderfully. :)
Snape: Alan Rickman is, hands down, one of the most amazing actors I've ever seen & as Snape, he's amazing. :)
Draco: As said before by Sally, Draco's character really grows & is interesting & gets to you. Not to mention Tom Felton is just boss. :)
Jason | July 8, 2009 10:14 PM
HERMIONE!!
She frikken saves those boys butts hundreds of times in the last book. She's awesome, and it helps that Emma is amazingly gorgeous!
Travers is the man | July 8, 2009 9:35 PM
Travers, you are pretty right on most of the time. But how the hell did you give Public Enemies 3 and 1/2 stars. You are enabling Michael Mann, a true talent, who has all of these resources at his command, who should be able to make a great movie but hasn't since The Insider. I hope your giving this Harry Potter a real review unlike your charity review for Depp's Public Enemies, so I am not as let down. On the qyestion: Who is the best supporting character? Snape and then Hermione.
madz05 | July 8, 2009 9:22 PM

Ron (Rupert) all the way. Rupert is the best ever!
2nd I would say Snape because alan Rickman plays the part so well

Alan Rickman is my favourite actor. I adore his acting. His abilities really shine in his portrayal of Severus Snape.

Rupert Grint as Ron all the way. He is such a great actor and portrays Ron with great comedic timing and heart.
mary | July 8, 2009 8:31 PM
I definitely think Ron is the best character(other than Harry). Radcliffes(Harrys) acting abilities are remarkable he has developed his character better than anyone else could. Ron is always at Harrys side and throughout the story they have developed a true friendship. Hermione is my second choice she is always at Harrys side throughout the series. I truly hope her and Ron can develop a loving relationship.
HPgeek | July 8, 2009 8:29 PM

maybe Snape though.
yeah actually Snape
i love both though
my third placer would be Hermione but its still SNAPE ALL THE WAY!

It's all about the sneer. He's funny, evil, good, and mysterious. Snape all the way.
Kymmico | July 8, 2009 7:29 PM
It's a toss-up between Snape and Hermione - Harry wouldn't have been able to do it in the end without either of them...
Character-wise: Rickman has just NAILED Snape's character and then some - EXCELLENT acting.
Fan | July 8, 2009 7:26 PM
Ron all the frickin way!
babs | July 8, 2009 7:13 PM
Ron, all the way, but with honorable mentions for Snape and Draco. All these actors are terrific, and I'm thrilled they'll each be showing us more depth in HBP and Deathly Hallows.
claus | July 8, 2009 7:13 PM
Ron Weasley!!! <3
Sally | July 8, 2009 7:13 PM
It's a toss up between Draco and Snape, but if I had to choose, Draco hands down. I don't care if Tom thinks he's a slimy git, I think JK gave him the shaft. He's been redeemed if Harry's willing to nod to him in the end. He changes throughout the books, everyone else stays the same.

My vote goes for Tom. Draco's story in this movie is great; more complex and compelling than his former storylines. This is such a great series, and I think the movies have all been beautifully directed.
P.S. Hey travs, thanks for your review on transformers 2. That movie was awful
Matt09m | July 8, 2009 6:45 PM
I also enjoy Rickman's take on Snape. It's perfect casting. I also admire the talents of Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. He brought the gimmicky character alive after Richard Harris died.
lordbean | July 8, 2009 6:05 PM
I personally think Rickman's portrayal of Snape is remarkable. He takes the character in Rowling's books and brings him to a whole other level.
Also, Michael Gambon has really grown on me in the role of Dumbledore.
Chris | July 8, 2009 5:39 PM
