Justin Long, the Mac guy, wins my good sport award for participating in the inaugural Off the Cuff with Peter Travers Show. Taking place in my office at Rolling Stone, the series is meant as a chance to chat with actors and filmmakers about everything but their current movie. No plugs allowed. I did allow a quick shout-out to Long's new movie, Drag Me To Hell, because director Sam Raimi did a hell of a job with the scares and Long brought a sly, witty charm to a role he aptly describes as "the girlfriend." Long's costar Alison Lohman is the one who gets slimed (maybe next time, Justin).
Anyway, I teased Long unmercifully, about everything from critics who hate his movies to his off-and-on relationship with Drew Barrymore. I even threatened his meal ticket by telling him my office Mac froze just as I was calling up his Google entry. Long picked up fast on the joke and gave better than he got. His mimicry of all four Beatles is spot on. Let me know if you like the concept, and who'd you like to see next on the hot seat. This photo shows Long doing something nasty with the V for Vendetta mask I keep in my office. He earned the privilege.

You're my favorite critic with my dream job!...and now a dream guest for the first show...I enjoyed it, especially the Beatles bit and thought he was charming and intelligent (in character as the boyfriend in DMTH).
I'd love to hear an interview with Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Brad Leland, Taylor Kitch or even Kyle Chandler or Peter Berg...OK I'm a FNL fan.
Thanks for the enjoyable piece.

I liked it. Would come back and watch others. Justin Long is a surprisingly good interview and was interesting to watch. I was impressed by his Beatles impersonations.

Three cheers for your concept, Mr. Travers! I vote for Edward Norton to be a guest. If I could have dinner with any three people, I have known for a long time that I'd pick Peter Travers, Edward Norton, and my favorite gymnast, Bart Conner. Two of three isn't bad.

Having Long on you inaugural show was a great choice - and like everyone else so far, I really enjoyed the episode. I think Will Smith would be hilarious but I would rather see Bale or Depp as a guest.
Good luck in securing those two.

Travers is actually fuckin' hilarious. That's great commitment on "Dreams of a Douchebag".
Yep Yep | June 3, 2009 5:50 AM

I forgot to add my only concern: did I hear correctly you had a Lifetime movie in that stack? Ah!!

When I first heard about this, I figured it would just be like Popcorn, Mr. Travers show on ABC, which I like except I feel is too brief.
This is, however, much better than Popcorn. I like the questions Peter asks--they aren't every other interviewer that just asks the same questions to everyone. The setting of his office makes it feel a lot more relaxed and fun than Popcorn and I think makes the person being interviewed more layed back and enjoyable to listen to.
I give this first episode high marks. I always love hearing Travers on Twitter, his weekly review show, his blog, and Popcorn. I'm glad I have yet another outlet.
Wouldn't it be great to have Ed Asner on?
