Disaster Report: "American Idol" Goes to the Movies — Music is the Victim!

April 15, 2009 10:47 AM

Photo: Mickshaw/FOX
Even with Quentin Tarantino acting as mentor — and the dude knows his music! — the American Idol Movie Song Night struck more sour notes than Britney singing live. Don't get me wrong, dawgs, I'm picking Adam Lambert for the Big Win on confetti night. But Adam was coasting on past triumphs with "Mad World" and "Tracks of My Tears" when he tore into Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" like a show queen trying to pass as rough trade. It was fun, but unpersuasive. And, dammit to hell, it's not a song written for a movie. It's a song that got used in movie — Easy Rider to be specific. There's a difference.

(Check out photos from the current season of American Idol)

What happened to integrity of the concept? Only Kris Allen, singing "Falling Slowly" from the romantic musical Once, stayed true to the form and delivered — for me (if not for judge Randy Jackson) —the performance of the night. Judge Kara DioGuardi called the song "obscure," though it charted at No. 2 and won the Oscar as Best Original Song of 2007. Bette Midler's "The Rose" is a solid tune, but Lil Rounds sang it in the key of karaoke. The other contestants just showed bad song and/or bad movie taste.

My second fave performer on Idol Season 8, sixteen-year-old Allison Iraheta, chose Aerosmith's ''I Don't Want to Miss a Thing'' from the hateful Armageddon, and gave her worst performance ever. The struggling Matt Giraud sunk in a pop swamp of Bryan Adams on ''Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?'' from the obscure (for real) Don Juan DeMarco. And then Bryan Adams, AGAIN!, for Anoop Desai on ''(Everything I Do) I Do It for You'' from the unwatchable Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Where was QT when the Idol contestants decided that the night's theme was all things sappy? Tarantino should have gone medieval on Danny Gokey's ass when he chose "Endless Love" from the endlessly boring movie of the same name. The group number on tonight's results show should be "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle and Flow, so desperate are the contestants to win audience love. It's not like the movies don't produce great music. Everyone from Bob Dylan ("Things Have Changed") to Eminem ("Lose Yourself") has won Oscars for composing songs for the cinema. Songs that that don't make you embarrassed or stuff your ears with popcorn. Except from Kris Allen, I didn't hear any last night. Am I wrong? Now it's your turn to play Simon Cowell.

Adam is in a league all by himself...period. Whether he wins or not is another thing. Should he win? Hell yeah, but being this is American Idol he may just be too much for white bread Americans to handle. Sorry, but its true. I hope this is not the case though. Without Adam the show wouldn't be worth watching at all. I've never watched until this season and the only reason I do is because of him. Every week his renditions are fresh and entertaining. As far as Mad World goes, I have always loved the Jules version and when they said he would be singing that I was shocked...how cool; I thought pigs were gonna fly, this is AI for pete's sake. Anyway, yeah, vote off Adam and I think many won't be tuning in next week...me included.

buddy | April 29, 2009 9:01 AM

i do not know if I agree with you. it is just that that song stinks so bad, god it sucks poop

Carol | April 19, 2009 10:58 AM

All I can say is that I would never buy anything Adam recorded unless it was part of a Broadway musical. This guy is over the top theatrical. If I was sitting in a Broadway theatre, I would find him tolerable but his high pitch, screechy singing on AI, just makes me want to turn the show off and Paula's excessive praise of all his performances makes me nauseous. I thought this show was about taking people who don't have a career in the music business and giving them a chance at one. As far as I'm concerned, Adam has a career and he is right where he should be, in the theatre. Allison has a good chance at a career in music. She's talented and cute. Matt G. is really interesting too and I'd like to hear more from him when he is a little more polished. But my all time favorite is Kris Allen. He deserves a shot at a music career and I know I would buy any music he made. On the result show Simon summed up Kris' last perfomance in one word,"Brilliant". What more needs to be said?

Billy | April 19, 2009 5:44 AM

Some of you people are either tone deaf or COMPLETELY incapable of judging talent objectively.

In 8 years of AI, EIGHT YEARS, exactly ONE time has Simon given a standing ovation.

This contest was over from the moment Adam Lambert totally slayed "Black and White."

What we're seeing now is akin to cruel and unusual punishment- none of these other people have the slightest prayer to win. Not even the slightest.

Truth | April 19, 2009 4:05 AM

Adam has been doing professional Theater for a whole decade. That is Adam's profession. So Adam fans you can't compare Adam with other contestants on the show who are not professionals.

Plus Adam is 29-30 years and older then the other contestants on the show. When Adam started his career professionally Kris was in Junior High School. Kris has never had professional experience so he is a novice.

I like Adam, but some of you Adam fans don't realize that Adam is already a professional and knows how to work the camera, stage props and lighting. If you look on Youtube Adam did the same 'sitting-in-the-chair' routine in the theater as he did in his rendition of Mad World.

Meanwhile in an interview Kris said he never sang without his guitar before so for him just singing without his guitar is a major feat.

Kris picked a song that has not been overplayed, oversang, and overdone for years on the radio and on American Idol, plus Kris sang it beautifully. I give Kris props for doing that and doing it with emotion and heart.

Love Adam, love all his performances. He gives Idol the boost it needs. Simon may be obnoxious, but he knows how to market and how to find performers that will be successful and make a lot of money. If he says Adam is the real deal, amazing and gifted, I believe him. We've heard from many past and present Idols that the list of songs they can choose from is very limited and boring. I think many of them did well with the approved songs, although I loved Kris, Adam and Allison best!

Americana | April 17, 2009 5:10 PM

The songs suck because the SHOW sucks!! WTF songs from movies hey might as well done the ENTIRE review from "High School Musical"! Which is what AI is turning into that or some cheesy Anette and Frankie 'beach' sing along movie. The song choices get worse every season I mean come on songs from the year you were born. For most of them it was 1981 and that was a CRAP year for music and please Lulu she was a one-hit blunder 30 some YEARS AGO. The show is stupid and stcuk in the middle ages or middle America in any case I can't watch this slow-moving,mind-numbing ode to crap songs and worse karoake.

Carla | April 17, 2009 1:43 PM

Kris easily won the night. And, if you are into dudes wearing scary makeup, piercings, leather pants, weird hairdos, then you might find Kris borning. Daughtery never had to resort to the theathre either. Keep it up Kris, at least you are getting there on your wonderful talent!

yojimbo | April 16, 2009 8:58 PM

For Bbass. Falling won the Oscar for Best Song. For your info, to be nominated for Best Song, the song had to be written for a movie. Check it out, dog.

Reality... Check Please | April 16, 2009 8:17 PM

The problem with pointing out ALl THOSE OTHER songs they could have sang is simple: they don't have the option of choosing ALL THOSE OTHER SONGS. The pool of pickings is paralizingly slim - expensive licensing and artist-domain rights severely limits what song they can/can't sing and even that shallow puddle is subject to pulling picks from a hat.Why not just settle back folks, it's a free ride, you don't have to love any of'em and hate'm is, if I may have a Simon moment...totally self-indulgent.

sass | April 16, 2009 5:43 PM

I really dislike adam; i think he is a lame poser. none of the other contestants impressed me last night though.

morfin77 | April 16, 2009 4:42 PM

I really enjoy Adam's personality, but the scream-singing is starting to get old with me.

LT | April 16, 2009 4:32 PM

Or his sex appeal for that matter.

LT | April 16, 2009 4:29 PM

Last I heard Elvis Presley used to wear guyliner. Didn't hamper his beautiful vocals any either.

josie | April 16, 2009 3:39 PM

Adam wears make-up because he is a performer; the only one this season with the exception of Allison. Without Adam, the ratings would tank like a helium balloon hit with a surface to air missile. B.O.R.I.N.G. -- Matt as a superstar? Please.

miljacbe | April 16, 2009 3:19 PM

Can anybody explain to me why Adam has to use make up all the time? Is this a new fashion in the young people nowadays? Or does he belong to a certain group? Don’t get me wrong, I think Adam is very talented and has a beautiful voice. What worries me is to think if this is the way young boys are going to be from now on? Yesterday, when I saw the way Adam’s lips and eyes were make up, honestly it gave me the creep. I recognize that I am a very conservative person, but honestly the last thing I want to see is men using make up.

Anonymous | April 16, 2009 3:02 PM

"Tarantino should have gone medieval on Danny Gokey's ass when he chose "Endless Love" from the endlessly boring movie of the same name."

Ok were you not paying attention when he said that was a song thats personal to him?

Val | April 16, 2009 2:43 PM

Although this (Born To Be Wild)was not my favorite performsnce of Adam's, he is absolutely sensational!!! I seldom buy cd's of anyone current, as most are lacking in talent, unlike artists of the 70's and 80's. Adam Lambert, however, will definitely be in my cd case. The other contestants are a long way from competing with Adam on an even keel, and I hope he wins. Even if he doesn't, the show (AI) has opened some doors for Adam!!

SarahN | April 16, 2009 2:22 PM

I could have only hoped that someone who writes for RollingStone would have something of interest to say. You are whining about the contestants being desperate to win audience love? Hello. That's what the program is about. Contestant sings- people vote.
And if the week was about 'songs written specifically for a movie' then that's what they would have done. Your 'who gives a damn' attitude is boring. Either write like you care or write about something else.

kalynn0225 | April 16, 2009 2:19 PM

I for one am over the screaming of Adam when he sounds like Vince Neil. Lil has lost it, Alison needs to mix it up a bit, Danny's a lounge singer, can't really figure out Anoop, I don't want to like him but everytime he opens his mouth it sounds good. Ive always liked Matt but Kris is the one that should win.

marmie | April 16, 2009 1:52 PM

I must say that this years's contestants are as diverse as any year that I can remember. I feel the last seven are the largest group of true talent that the show has held at this point in the competition. However, the show is getting boring. I think they should allow more updated songs.

I wish Lil would stop trying to copy Diva songs and Matt needs to relax. All of them are good and it is difficult to choose a favorite.

I wouldn't be surprised if Adam wins. He seems to be the best at holding the stage and entertaining the audience. I almost feel he may be too good for this competition though.

Don't get me wrong. All of them are great singers, but Adam is experienced and is so comfortable on stage.

scoofer | April 16, 2009 11:51 AM

I was waiting for songs like "Live and Let Die" or "Philadelphia" or "A Hard Day's Night". Adam, again a standout, but a predictable choice of songs. However, almost everyone else put me to sleep.

Dr. Mabuse | April 16, 2009 10:52 AM

American Idol is still on?

Sorry I've missed it--I've been busy living my life.

GENE | April 16, 2009 10:04 AM

I actually find myself looking down upon those who say Adam shouldn't be in this competition because he is different from the other AL finalists. They just seem very closed minded and boxed in. Obviously they can’t appreciate art in all it’s variations. If it isn’t colored inside the lines and looks like a REAL bowl of fruit, then it isn’t worth hanging on the wall, according to their beliefs. For another, many of them are being judgmental of Adam’s appearance - they call him “fake”. It’s “fake” that a man wears eyeliner or fingernail polish or dye his hair. The likes of Freddie Mercury, Bowie etc didn't have any problem dressing up so I don't see why others who may be similarly flamboyant shouldn't do the same. Any Idol competitor or winner can come from any genre or style, and I welcome people who go outside the box.

dlt | April 16, 2009 8:09 AM

A thorough lack of belief. No soul. Joy follows garbage, decadence.

Quentin Tarantino's a cartoon himself, like all his Get Shorty heroes

Mar | April 16, 2009 6:29 AM

You're so offbase. Adam is it - everyone else is as dim as the lightbulb in your head.

Jeff | April 16, 2009 1:07 AM

A pretty awful week, I agree, though I thought Adam was (yet again) creative, entertaining, and genuine. No other contestant is even worth mentioning this week, except perhaps for Lil Rounds, who signed her letter of resignation from Idol on Tuesday night.

I don't understand, though, why you are wanting these people to play into the atrocious theme-week nonsense. If they attempting to show true artistry, they should be trying to rise above those silly themes.

mtlfan | April 15, 2009 10:34 PM

agree with you 100%
If it was not for Kris, I would have prefer to do something else than watching this episode

Susan | April 15, 2009 10:30 PM

I think that Adam cheapens AI. He may have a good voice but so do a lot of the other contestants. Everything about him is false from his dyed hair to his heavy makeup. If he ends up winning it will be my last season to watch Idol. I enjoy all of the other finalists but I think he is in the wrong competition.

momalot | April 15, 2009 10:13 PM

I enjoyed Anoop and Adam the most. Both good looking and even though I don't care for Adam's style of music I think he really has his own style and polish. Anoop is fun and mischivious or should I say flirtatious of sorts. I like his style.
Allyson is good too but again I am not a rock fan but she does sing a soft rock which is nice.
Kris was boring me to death. The rest just didn't cut it for me.

saad | April 15, 2009 10:02 PM

yeah tonight was such a pussy night for idol and the lack of judges comments sucked the life out too. they should just cut down on seacrest's lame attempts at humor

mark | April 15, 2009 9:45 PM

there were so many good songs to choose from - Bruce Springsteen - the wrestler would have been a great adam choice.

Rose | April 15, 2009 8:56 PM

AI should have a program of songs with an attitude theme or a night of Angry Songs. Melinda Doolittle provided a great performance when she sang Bon Jovi's Have a Nice Day and Adam Lambert was fun to watch when he sang Satisfaction. Anything would be better than week after week of sappy Love songs like we have this year on Idol.

GHING | April 15, 2009 8:40 PM

OMFG...... KRIS IS SOOOOOOO BORING......SNOOZEFEST!!!!
A STONE HAS MORE PERSONALITY THAN HIM!!!!!

pauly | April 15, 2009 8:24 PM

lol mikey thats all i could think of too when i heard endless love lol good ol happy gilmore, i think anoops performance was the best of the night, idk what people see in adam hes garbage i will give it to him he did kill mad world but other than that he fuckin sucks did anyone hear his take on "ring of fire" if jonny cash was alive today that would have killed him.

JP | April 15, 2009 7:10 PM

I have to ask: Doesn't music gets murdered in every episode of "American Idol"? You can count on one hand the number of people who was on the show that was worth listening to. For me it's one: Kelly Clarkson. I'm not a big fan of her. Her first album is unlistenable tripe to me.

the echo | April 15, 2009 6:49 PM

A movie, about a tv show, about singing songs from artists who made them for movies.

This is pop circle-jacking at it's finest. Keep it up people. Let's pave the world with neon lights.

Michele | April 15, 2009 6:39 PM

I couldn't agree with you MORE! I am an Adam WORSHIPPER, and if he's not the American Idol, then the show is finished. I really wish people wouldn't refer to him as a mere show Queen, when he's the KING of Queens.

Yet, I was mortified by his choice with all the awesome movie themes. I thought it would have been a match made in heaven. I thought he'd do a James Bond theme, or even a show to movie theme like from Evita, or Sweeney Todd, or anything but BORING BORN TO BE WILD.

I really like little Alison, but, she sounded so hoarse and as Randy would say "pitchy" that I am worried that she is developing serious throat problems, like nodules on her vocal chords. She shouldn't sound like that at 16, like a 3 pack a day Marlboro smoker.

I hated the show, in short.

River | April 15, 2009 6:26 PM

I agree with you 100%
The 4/14 AI show was boring.....ZZZZZZ Poor taste of songs and movies.

Except, Kris Allen got the class. He is an intelligent man with great voice and his good looks attract my eyes.

Kris made the night. Thank you Kris.

Cate | April 15, 2009 6:19 PM

Hard to question the song picks unless we know what they were given to choose from. And I think you made a typo about Adam's tried (and true)look! ;)

DS | April 15, 2009 6:05 PM

Agree 100% - last night's singing was mediocre - devoted fan since Season 2; can't remember a time when I couldn't find anything really good.

deb haeson | April 15, 2009 5:44 PM

loved loved endless love beautiful rendition sweet and powerful. Loved his new look too:)

Got Gokey?

DB | April 15, 2009 4:29 PM

Harder and harder to be enthused about any of them this year.

Mikey | April 15, 2009 3:12 PM

Endless Love?? All I could think of was Happy Gilmore and Julie Bowen dancing in a hockey rink.

What? Friends sing Endless Love in the dark!

Bbass | April 15, 2009 2:39 PM

Falling Slowly was not written for that movie either. It appeared on The Frames album "The Cost" before the movie was out. It also appears on The Swell-Season album. The song was written before the movie was created.

Valerie | April 15, 2009 2:32 PM

I agree with you entirely. Although I don't need the show queen to convince me more; entertaining me suffices.
