This weekend At the Movies marks the official beginning of summer. Don't bother checking your calendars, Rolling Stone movie critic Peter Travers says with X-Men Origins: Wolverine hitting theaters on May 1st, Hollywood's Summer Movie Season has officially began. And it starts off with a yawn. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine was the best part of the original X-Men trilogy, but here the most personable actor on Earth grimaces his way through a action film that gets too repetitive after its stunning, century-spanning opening sequence. Plus, it didn't help the potential box office when the entire workprint of the film leaked out onto the Internet more than a month before its release date. Thanks to Liev Schreiber's performance as Wolverine's mutant brother Victor/Sabretooth, the film avoids the Scum Bucket. Wolverine is okay, Travers says, and simply "starts the summer in a nice popcorn way."
And then there's the deplorable Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring the newly crowned King of the Rom-Coms, Matthew McConaughey.
This Scum Bucket-bound film is a horror show, but what did you expect from the actor whose given us The Wedding Planner, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch and Fool's Gold in the span of a decade? Copping the storyline from A Christmas Carol, the film also stars Jennifer Garner as McConaughey's love interest and Michael Douglas as Matthew's dead uncle who returns as a ghost to show our gigolo protagonist how poorly he's treated women. During a scene when it's pouring rain outside, Douglas' character actually says the line "Those are the tears of all the women whose hearts you've broken" to McConaughey. Avoid this film at all costs. Unless "at all costs" means you're forced to see Beyoncé's even-worse Obsessed. If that's the case, feign swine flu immediately.

Ive seen every comic book movie and I must say Origins was amazing! It had action/romance/betrayl/drama/violence/ and amazing fight scenes! Im mind boggled as to why people are giving it crappy reviews. It rocked! Go see it if you havent yet! This time I strongly disagree with the critics.

Liev Schreiber was awsome in wolverine, the fights between Wolverine and his character Sabertooth are great, rest of it hit and miss. Ryan Renolds is funny for 5 min he is in it.

.. not to diss on your analogy, Mr. Smith, but if I go to Rallys, I expect greasy fries, crappy service and a roach in my shake. But I go anyways cuz it tastes good. I don't go to Wolverine and expect Citizen Kane. I expect mindless fkn explosions and special fx.

I usually watch these for the substance, but I gotta admit, that bit with you and Wolverine growling at the same time was pretty fucking cool.

Spot on, as always.
I love it when people get all butt-hurt because their favorite little summer blockbuster didn't do so good on the Trav-scale.
And enough with the argument that "it's just supposed to be entertaining". That's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of chum delivered to you, then when you ask about it the waiter says. "Well it's EDIBLE, sir. What? Do you expect every plate of food to be a five course meal?"
Talk about a cop out.

@Peter Travers: hilarious thematic usage of Wolverine fury. :-)

Nicely done Mr. Travers. I agree about Wolverine, although as an avid comic book geek I enjoyed probably a little more than you average joe. It did have some very exciting action seuquences in them, although the movie really lacked heart and above all sophistication, especially now that we've had Nolan at the helm of the two greatest superhero movies.
Next week Star Trek, that will be awesome, Trekkie or no Trekkie.
