At The Movies With Peter Travers: "Tyson," "The Soloist" and "The Informers"

April 23, 2009 2:38 PM

This weekend you'll get your first chance to see the documentary that Rolling Stone movie critic Peter Travers calls one of the best films he's seen this year. The picture is Tyson, and it tells the riveting story of Mike Tyson in the boxer's own words. Like this King of the Ring used to do to his opponent, the film is sure to knock you out. The doc explores the embattled boxer's entire life, from his violent childhood to his first matches to his marriage to Robin Givens to the rape that put Tyson behind bars for three years and nearly killed him. The whole story, straight from Tyson's "schizophrenic" mind out his helium-voiced mouth. Directed by James Toback, a friend of Tyson's for nearly 20 years, the film is a must-see and earned three and a half stars from Travers in his RS review.

Also out this week: a flawed but ultimately worthwhile film called The Soloist. Originally set for release during Oscars season, the based-on-a-true-story film stars Robert Downey Jr. as a Los Angeles reporter who finds a schizophrenic homeless man, played by Jamie Foxx, with an incredible talent for playing the violin. Both lead actors shine in the film, and the film's refusal to conform to typical Hollywood sentimentality makes it worth seeing.

Then there's the Scum Bucket, and this week Travers throws a film in there which he thinks is somehow even worse than Beverly Hills Chihuahua. It's called The Informers and is based on short stories by author Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho.) Despite an all-star cast featuring Mickey Rourke, Billy Bob Thornton and Kim Basinger, the film is an "atrocity," vacuuming out all of Ellis' trademark dark humor that made the original source material so great. Avoid at all costs and instead rent the film adaptation of Ellis' Rules of Attraction.

the informers is amazing. it doesnt have to mean anything, or have a plot or a point for that matter, it just is. like less than zero, no point, just is. this movie is amazing, the csat is amazing, its art, pure art.

have any of you seen the informers? Before you start bitching about his review of the movie go see it. and then you will realize how spot on travers was with his review. He was just trying to save you all 2 hours of your life and 10 bucks, and i'm sure if you watch the movie you will be able to do nothing but agree with him. The movie just went absolutely nowhere, and you are left leaving the theater feeling totally jipped.

"Writing intelligent movie reviews is definitely more constructive than coming up with snide comments on websites."

Interesting but writing film reviews is what Peter Travers does for a living while none of you people attacking this person actually knows what he or she does. In fact, you know nothing about them so while you'd like to think that by attacking this person, in defense of Mr. Travers, you're somehow being heroic when, in fact, you're judging a person's character entirely on one little comment. Plus he/she put a wink at the end of their message so, for all you know, he or she could be joking. Congratulations, you're a bunch of bullies.

I heart BEE and so what if this movie is bad? He is probably the one laughing at all of us. This critic (Peter) is jealous of BEE's amazing body of work. Love Bret, Hate Peter!

The movie had potential and if anyone is familiar with the industry, they know that a horrendous director and bad casting can be a recipe for a pretty shitty movie. I say Bret is not taken as seriously as he should. Keep in mind that he remains the very first best-selling author EVER at age 21 to be noted for his work. In time, he will be seen as a voice of several generations, not just the 80's. Has this critic had the distinguished honor of an accomplishment such as that one? I think not.

i have a feeling that the reviewer was wronged by bret.

"YellowDickRoad", huh?

Seems to be a glaring insight into your intellect.

"useless film critics"? Let's see, what's a rocket scientist like you doing reading movie reviews, anyway? Your comment is about as vacuous as your head: are you defending Beverly Hills Chihuahua? The Informers?

The utility, DickHead, is reading reviews might help you spend your Social Security Disablility payments and unemployment checks more wisely.

Try this: a) don't like this blog? Don't read it; b) wanna spend your $ on some lame movies? Go ahead and see all the tasty offerings from the Scum Bucket; c) get a life + get a clue + get over yourself.

The scum bucket? I thought that was filled with useless film critics that haven't done anything constructive with their lives. ;)
