The Razzie Awards: The Year's Worst Films Earn Their Praise

February 20, 2009 1:25 PM

Each year since 1980, the Saturday before the Oscars the Golden Raspberry Awards honor the year's crappiest films from Showgirls to Gigli. So what's Razzie-worthy from 2008? Peter Travers points a finger at the most-nominated film, Mike Myers' The Love Guru ("Everybody in that movie sucked," he says). And this won't be a shocker: Paris Hilton gets nods for her roles in The Hottie and the Nottie and Repo: The Genetic Opera.

Click above to watch Travers take a stroll down the Razzie's memory lane (Battlefield Earth, anyone?) and break down this year's contenders.

First off 'daddio' learn to SPELL putz! And some punctuation and sentence structure "The Happening" was complete tripe! I could have made a better film I mean come on 'plants' WTF?!! That movie sucked donkey balls.

I don't know if I would stop straching my head about Paris Hilton's popularity if she did played The Architect in "Matrix Reloaded". However, I did have a good laugh picturing Paris Hilton delivering those pretentious lines from the movie.

Punctuation, Daddio!

You sound like the Architect if he were played by Paris Hilton. (Would people then finally care about Paris Hilton so JP could stop scratching his head?)

"Each year since 1980, the Saturday before the Oscars the Golden Raspberry Awards honor the year's crappiest films"

Of course, like Stanley Kubrik as worst director for The Shining and Shelley Duval for worst actress for the same film, in the same year (1980). Very mediocre indeed, not The Shining but this witless "award".

i agree with the happening being a good film i really liked it i was creeped out by it as for the razzies they dont really much know how to nominate people like after all these years why hasnt beyonce been nominated shes not a good actress she deserved to win the razzie in austin powers goldmember shes horrible and why wasnt vanessa minillo or however u spell the nobodys last name nominated she sucked even worst than paris hilton who won idk but razzies should look back carefully at those who deserve to be honor such as tyler perry for directing cmon shymalan is great i understand maybe lady in the water being nominated bcuz its guilty pleasure but the happening is better than most scary films so to the razzie people great job on the recognition but look carefully next time (marcus nispel for f13 for us giving the same jason movies nothing new)or more to come michael bay

It's disappointing that "The Happening" have been unfairly maligned. I think it was a really good movie that used the horror movie genre to make an interesting statement about the environment. It's a statement that people don't mention often enough. We need to do things not to "save the planet", but to save ourselves. The planet and nature will continue and thrive after we are gone. It just that we are doing things to the planet that cause it to be uninhabitable to us.

As much as I scratch my head as to why anybody cares about Paris Hilton, I got to say I hate the way people (Peter Travers, I'm looking at you as well.) use Paris Hilton as the reason to hate "Repo! The Genetic Opera". It was also an unjustly overlooked and maligned movie last year as well. An audacious musical with alot cogent thoughts about our society obsession with beauty, health care system, fate, etc. This was a movie with the heart and mind that "The Dark Knight" severely lacked.

As for the concept of the Razzies, I'm for it. There are alot of atrocious movies that clog up the cineplex. Like right now, I am having a hard time to find enough showings of the Oscar movies I want to see, because they show cheesy horror movies and chick flicks thousand times a day. While they regulate the quality movies to one or two showing a day.
