Oscar Week: Best Actor—Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke in a Fight to the Finish. Is a Tie the Only Fair Answer?

February 17, 2009 12:14 PM

Sean Penn Vs Mickey Rourke.

As far as I'm concerned it's the closest race at the Oscars this Sunday. Condolences to the other three nominees—

--Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon

--Richard Jenkins in The Visitor

--Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Sunday night will be The Sean and Mickey Show. So how are you pacing your bets?

MICKEY ROURKE in THE WRESTLER

Good Reason for Picking Him: Comeback Kid Rourke has the role of his career as a "broken down piece of meat" who's not ready to go over the hill. Rourke has been bluntly honest about how the screwup he's playing on screen is pretty much the screwup he is (or was) in life. How do Oscar voters resist that?

Stupid Reason for Not Picking Him: Rourke is basically playing himself.

SEAN PENN in MILK

Good reason for Picking Him: Playing assassinated gay-rights activist Harvey Milk, Penn disappears into the role with the artistry of an acting virtuoso. This isn't just another great Penn performance. It may be his greatest performance.

Stupid Reason for Not Picking Him: Penn already won an Oscar five years ago for Mystic River. He'll have lots of other big roles. Rourke probably won't.

Best Bet: In the final rounds leading up to Sunday, Rourke has the heat and it's building. But Penn has my heart. These are two brilliant performances. So I'm asking, why not a tie? The Academy has done it twice before. Once, in 1969, when Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl) and Katharine Hepburn (The Lion in Winter) shared the gold. And once, way back in the Pleistocene era (1932), when Wallace Beery in The Champ, playing a boxer as washed-up as Rourke's wrestler, fought to a draw against Fredric March doing his own kind of transformation in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A Penn-Rourke tie seems far more warranted than these. Or does it? Your turn to weigh in.

Sean Penn is a great actor no question. But I think that the Academy made the wrong choice for Best Actor. Mickey Rourke's work in The Wrestler was outstanding. Penn's was too, but I think that he got the "important political statement" vote. For the record I am on Penn's side on this issue, but I just think that the Hollywood elite Academy wanted to make a statement on the issue of gay rights, and who better that the outspoken Sean Penn to give an passionate speech on the subject. Mickey Rourke's performance was one for the ages, his comback from obscurity was a great story, I think he was robbed!!! He should have been standing on that podium yesterday.

suzie | February 23, 2009 12:48 PM

I saw three of the nominees for Best Movie and still believe Gran Torino was the best movie of the year. Also, I knew Sean Penn would win best actor simply because of the part he played. Hollywood leans so far to the left that any movie about homosexuality stands a good chance of winning an award. Clint Eastwood deserved best actor for Gran Torino but knowing Hollywood, the academy will choose a movie about a homosexual over a movie which depicts an old man insulting Asians every time. Eastwood needn't worry, the box office receipts speak for themselves; i.e.., Gran Torino made more money than Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, and Frost/Nixon combined.

BEV | February 23, 2009 12:45 AM

SEAN WON BUT I THINK HE WANTED MICKEY TO WIN

Aaron | February 22, 2009 5:42 PM

My money's on Sean. He's won the Critic's Award and the SAG award, and those are consistently good indicators.
But I'd love to see a tie.

maddie | February 22, 2009 11:01 AM

Sean Penn.
No question.

Beako | February 19, 2009 11:10 PM

This Morgan Fairchild is what did it for me. Oh. That poor little bloodthirsty primate she traded youthful eyes with! Why not Mickey Rourke? Half of the more manly of us in this forum could kick his aged, sickened, and yes tortured self. We glorify his obnoxious whine with hisses and scowls!

Jo-Ann | February 19, 2009 10:07 PM

Mickey Rourke was subjected to a ton of physical abuse in The Wrestler, and yeah, he exhibited a few moments of tenderness, but his performance doesn't hold a candle to Sean Penn's performance in Milk. Penn *became* Milk, in all his sweetness, vulnerability, and courage. It wasn't an easy role to play; it was deeply nuanced and ran the entire gamut of emotions. With all due respect to Mr. Rourke, I saw one persona on screen: that of Mickey Rourke's. Since when are the Oscars a very special kind of Olympics? The comeback angle has been overplayed.

Sean, you were the best. Thanks for sharing Harvey Milk's story with those who never knew about it. It was an extremely important story to tell, and you did so with bravery and grace.

John | February 19, 2009 7:59 PM

Dude it is Mickey all the way.

Anonymous | February 19, 2009 7:52 PM

Both are great films, by great directors, with great leading roles. I love Gus Van Sant, he has made some brilliant films. Aronofsky is absolutely on the right track to a great career.

But Mickey is the man, hands down. Rourke is an inspiration to Penn, who still hasn't pulled off roles like The Motorcycle Boy or Hank Chinaski.

Good to see so many people interested, and the right films being showcased this year!

Tequila Mockingbird | February 19, 2009 1:42 PM

Penn has no fear of The Underdog... that's why he will not survive.

Mickey deserves the win, although I do think Richard Jenkins deserves much for an amazing performance in "The Visitor."

Muschka | February 19, 2009 7:15 AM

Well, already the Boston Society of Film Critics have given their prize to both: Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke, so why not the Oscar too? So, Sean and Mickey have at least one good reason to visit each other - no honestly, give it to both of them!

Joe | February 19, 2009 12:09 AM

I know he won't win because both Penn and Rourke are great in showy roles, but please go back and watch "The Visitor" to watch a great character actor dig into the role of his life. (And it's too bad that neither Richard Jenkins nor Brad Pitt were nominated for "Burn After Reading")

Axl Rose | February 18, 2009 7:24 PM

I vote for Mickey, an incredible performance

PackDog | February 18, 2009 6:40 PM

Frang Langella may have given the greatest performance of the year in Frost/Nixon. Its a shame he is not even being brought up in conversation.

PackDog | February 18, 2009 6:39 PM

Frang Langella may have given the greatest performance of the year in Frost/Nixon. Its a shame he is not even being brought up in conversation.

Cindy Lou Who | February 18, 2009 5:58 PM

Mickey put an arrow through my heart as Randy The Ram. I didn't see Milk, but I think Sean wants Mickey to win the Oscar. Mickey is all over talking about The Wrestler and Penn appears to be laying low. They are friends so a tie would be nice. Is that the Big Surprise for this year's Oscars? I'll be watching.

BP | February 18, 2009 4:56 PM

Living is an endurance. We all know that. Does this film model Mickey's life in some ways? Maybe. Who else could play the part with such grace and humanity?

Leonardo | February 18, 2009 3:26 PM

As much as I love Sean Penn...Rourke gave a breathtaking/amazing performance only matched by Heath Leadger's The Joker.

He deserves the oscar...he did it the Brando/Pacino/De Niro way and besides...the man is close friend of Axl and Bruce Springsteen...

Mike | February 18, 2009 1:28 PM

both gave great performances, but forget all this "tie" nonsense...there can only be one winner! and in this case, I think it should be Mickey Rourke, though I won't feel he got cheated if Sean Penn ends up winning. If Rourke doesn't win an Oscar now, he probably never will...this is a once in a lifetime thing for him (not that that's a reason to give him the award, it's just why I hope he'll get it)

Mazzy | February 18, 2009 12:32 PM

Hey Mickey's dog just died. Give him the GOLD!!

But seriously I was all for Penn after seeing MILK BUT then I saw the Wrestler. Gotta give it to Rourke.

DMR | February 18, 2009 12:22 PM

Rourke broke my heart and Penn made me respect the gay men more. Both are unforgettable, but as far as a tie, It's like Capote vs Brokeback, Give it to the guy who worked harder to become the role, and that should be Rourke....

Tricky | February 18, 2009 11:31 AM

I don't think Penn should win because his character is nothing like him in real life and Rourke had the opportunity to use elements of his past in his performance. I'm sure that every actor uses some kind of life experience when building a character, even Penn as Milk.

Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:26 AM

The Wrestler didn't even get a nomination for best picture! It was amazing, Rourke was amazing, Tomei was amazing... Sean Penn was great in Milk but he didn't move me the way Rourke did.

Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:22 AM

I think Rourke should win because I just think his performance was better, it was so real.. didn't even feel like acting.

Tie! Tie! Tie! | February 18, 2009 11:17 AM

Sean Penn is unrecognizable as Harvey Milk, when looking into those eyes I only see Harvey - and Petey's, right, it is his greatest performance. Still - Rourke does that opposite, he puts enormous biographical elements into his character and performance, and it simply becomes heartrendingly real. Tie! It's the only fair thing to do.

richard hurtz | February 18, 2009 10:44 AM

penn, the head case? I am not sure you are familiar with Mickey Rourke. The man is a certified lunatic. Penn looks like Mr Rogers next to rourke. Both have been in some of my favorite movies. I think they should bare knuckle box for it. Rourke would win it. But if it was a knife fight i think Penn would win it.

Greasy | February 18, 2009 9:44 AM

Besides how hard he must have worked for the physical transformation, the pain he exuded jumped off the screen and into your mind....Rourke.

Nmar | February 18, 2009 7:23 AM

At this point it would be stupid not to give the Oscar to Rourke. His performance is raw acting and plus with all the hype and hoopla around Rourke being the comeback kid, Give it to him. Besides Penn's already won so that counts against him.

rockballs | February 18, 2009 6:45 AM

for all the people who are saying rourke no doubt.
have you even seen penn in milk?
i love rourke as i've been a fan since diner, pope, and barfly but i thought penn did a supreb job and people should have an open mind and give him a chance.
even if you don't like his
political ideas.
seperate the man from the art.

Lily | February 18, 2009 4:23 AM

I have not yet seen the Wrestler, but my husband has and he said it brought him to tears, it's all he talked about for weeks... and he is a tough critic. I have seen footage, and just the small parts I have seen (talking to his daughter) brought ME to tears... what depth and emotion! He put his heart and soul into this character... I pray he wins.

Pamela | February 18, 2009 4:15 AM

My vote to Mickey....he brought his character to life and you felt his pain. Mickey is more than just an actor. People can learn from his mistakes and he has been so honest about his life. He is trying so hard and has succeeded. His acting was great! People can't stop thinking about him and wishing him well. If he doesn't win the Oscar I will be so disappointed.

Peace&Love | February 18, 2009 2:50 AM

I'm sure nobody will be upset if the vote turns out to be so split that Richard Jenkins ends up taking it. The man is quality and would fully deserve that glory.

But, yeah, it is very hard to decide between Rourke and Penn.

Katie | February 18, 2009 1:42 AM

Penn is a win tie if you must.
Penn did Milk perfectly aready got he Brando Award best Actor for sure no doubt hands down no contest, sure fire, slam dunk bla bla bla bla,,,
come guys get you act together.. It's Penn in a walk the real thing.....Yah Yah Yah!!!

blitzy | February 18, 2009 1:34 AM

Mickey gave the greatest performance of his life for his age , what a comeback, he deserves to win
ALL the way, this would give him the boost to play in other entertaining movies to give us this pleasure of watching him, he is still handsome and a REAL man!!

Anonymous | February 18, 2009 1:28 AM

i DON'T LIKE SEAN PENN AND NEVER HAVE. HE'S A HEAD CASE AND I DETEST HEADCASES. MICKEY ROURKE, WAS A GREAT ACTOR IN NINE& A HALF WEEKS WAY BACK WHEN HE WAS PHYSICALLY YOUNG & HOT.

Sean Penn is a puke.

Rourke is an old guy and he did a superb job in The Wrestler, esp. for such an old guy who's gonna be 56 yrs old people - look at his physique. Amazing.

Rourke must win or else I'm boycottting the show.

pete | February 18, 2009 1:25 AM

sean should win this. portraying a historical figure like harvey milk in a biopic is much tougher than inventing a character like randy "the ram" in a narrative.

there wasn't even much invention in rourke's performance. he WAS playing himself. i hope i don't have to watch him and his fucking spray tan accept the oscar.

Gabe | February 18, 2009 1:16 AM

wtf? Why is everyone wanting mickey rourke to win? He was alright and I would be happy if it was tie, but the performance of a lifetime is SEAN PENN IN MILK. and its feels good to honor harvey's legacy and gay rights in this time of history. In fact every other nominee for best actor should win except brad pitt.

Mouse | February 18, 2009 12:32 AM

Nothing wrong with Penn's performance. At any other time, he'd win it.

But, this time, the spotlight belongs to Rourke.

I know acting has a lot to do with going places you normally wouldn't visit. However, seeing Penn play gay seemed a little overdone, at times.

Rourke *was* the Wrestler, plain and simple.

Mickey should get the Oscar.

Lazlo | February 18, 2009 12:18 AM

From Barfly's "looking at you is like swallowing a penis for eternity" to "i'm a broken down piece of meat" It's mickey all the way.

ELIZ | February 18, 2009 12:11 AM

MICKEY HAS GIVEN A PERFORMANCE OF THE DECADE FOR GODS SAKE..... LIKE THE 63 YR OLD GUY. I TOO AM GONNA HATE THE OSCARS IF MICKEY DOESNT TAKE HOME THE GOLD

julio | February 17, 2009 11:32 PM

I have no doubt this one's a close one, but can I pose a question?

How much is just hype during awards season? How can anyone possibly know the ebb and flow of people's opinions and decisions?

Sure there are countless award shows and events as key indicators, but don't media reports on awards "buzz" create the very "buzz" they're reporting on?

Does that make any sense?

bj | February 17, 2009 11:24 PM

Mickey has to win this....I could feel his pain in the movie. It was so touching and seemed so real. What an awesome role he played albeit true to his own life.

aman | February 17, 2009 11:23 PM

Rourke's performance moved me. But it's the details of the performance that got me: the tiny glasses, the action figure, the old Nintendo system, and that money belt he wears.

Look at the way his body sags in exhaustion after the fights in the movie.

It's more than a performance.

But the Academy's all politics anyway.

Alicia de Najera Sena | February 17, 2009 10:22 PM

I will NOT ever ---ever---ever again sit down and watch another Academy Award show if Mickey Rourke does not walk out of there with the Oscar......PERIOD..... and I have not missed these awards since I was 12 years old (I'm now 63) get it? This is serious. "Dear God, please let the voters follow their minds and hearts and know the difference between ho-hum mediocrity and blinding brilliance" Thank You for doing the honest, decent and honest, honorable thing here.

Mandela | February 17, 2009 9:56 PM

I think this is one time both would be happy for a tie. I mean Rourke's not going to complain. Penn wil realize this means he may be able to win a third time, something that has eluded all other actors in this category, and even if one win would be shared, i think he'd take it.

JAMI | February 17, 2009 9:45 PM

MICKEY, FOR SURE......HE DIED FOR THIS PART......HE HAD TO GO DOWN DEEP TO BRING THE RAM TO LIFE FOR US AND FEEL HIS HEARTACHE....SEAN IS A GREAT ACTOR,AND DID A SUPERB JOB IN THE MOVIE, BUT OSCAR I ASK YOU HAVE WE NOT SEEN THIS "ROLE " BEFORE? GIVE THE OLD MICK A GOLD ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Jack Wernick | February 17, 2009 9:29 PM

Both Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn performed their hearts out in two of the best film performances of the past few years. It's hard to believe this is Rourke's first Oscar nomination, given his talent and duration of his career. "The Wrestler" is quite simply the performance of a career.

Penn won an Oscar for "Mystic River" but his performance in "Milk" is a more nuanced, performance. The Penn v Rourke showdown is oddly reminiscent of the Hoffman v Ledger of "Capote" and "Brokeback Mountain" a few years ago. Again, top acting talent in indelible roles, a tough choice. However, Ledger was heart rending while Hoffman was technically impressive.

Let's hope Rourke earned enough good will back to win this Oscar. He sure deserves it.

Will | February 17, 2009 9:21 PM

I honestly don't think it's a tie. I think Sean gave the better performance and deserves the win. The only reason Mickey has this much pull is because of the comeback story aspect which shouldn't be a reason for voting for "Best Actor."

Sean | February 17, 2009 9:19 PM

The academy will give it to the actor in the BETTER movie, which is Milk. Also, my, er, I mean Penn's performance is far more complex than Rourke's. Sorry, Rourke, you done good, but not good enough.

bigheart | February 17, 2009 8:59 PM

Mickey all the way!
Oscar loves a performance of
this caliber, from the physical build-up of his body to the heart wrenching performance by this incredible come-back actor. If he doesn't get it, something's very wrong in tinsletown.

Cindy | February 17, 2009 8:57 PM

Mickey got my vote.

dany | February 17, 2009 8:36 PM

mickey for sure!!!he's back and for good+ he deserves it!!!wish u the best mickey!!

Juan Carlos | February 17, 2009 7:27 PM

Mickeys is absolutelly fabolous...
Sean is an amazing actor, but his character could hurt some "good minds" in the Academy. Mickeys is gonna get the Award. For sure

Bud | February 17, 2009 7:18 PM

My vote to Mr. Rourke...simply an outstanding performance that is second to none.

lala | February 17, 2009 2:00 PM

i hope sean penn wins ...
mickey was great also but ...
my vote goes to sean
