In this week's At the Movies with Peter Travers, Rolling Stone's movie critic talks about the new Clive Owen thriller The International, a "decent but not dazzling" drama that features what Travers calls "one of the great action scenes of all time," a 15-minute shoot-out in New York's Guggenheim Museum. Unfortunately, you won't be seeing The International this weekend. How come?
It's Valentine's Day, that's why! 2009 has already been a chick flick nightmare for Travers, with films like New in Town and Bride Wars stinking up theatres. This weekend, the ladies' destination of choice will be Confessions of a Shopaholic, a fringe Scum Bucket-worthy chick flick that is redeemed by one thing: actress Isla Fisher's comedic performance. Fisher already shined in Wedding Crashers and is married to Borat in real life, so she's a first-rate comic who stars in a chick flick that's "less of a torture," as Travers says.
The romantic movie you should be seeing this weekend, according to Travers, is Two Lovers, which features Joaquin Phoenix in what the new rapper (and loopy Letterman guest) calls his final acting role. The story of a down-and-out man deciding between two women (one of whom is Gywneth Paltrow), Travers pleads that someone please convince Joaquin to give up all this music talk, as the actor gives a "spectacular performance."
Still, you're more than likely going to wind up at Shopaholic this weekend. Instead of giving a sub-par movie your money and time, Travers recommends some DVDs that are perfect for Valentine's Day, including 10 Things I Hate About You starring Heath Ledger and Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. For Travers' full report, watch the video above.

Thank you for the recommendation, I watched C-beams glit... no, I watched All the Real Girls the other night and found it refreshing, with meditative pace and strong screenplay. I particularly like the central idea of how she does to him exactly what he'd done to numerous girls in the past. Zooey Deschanel is also a dish.

Joaquin Phoenix "new look" is a hoax.
