"Twilight"—Are You Dying to See the Movie or Dreading the Damn Thing?

November 12, 2008 2:51 PM

It's unofficial poll time. I want to know whether your blood is up for Twilight, the Stephenie Meyer bestseller of near Harry Potter proportions that hits the multiplex as a movie on Nov. 21st. I won't see it until three days before the opening, which is usually a sign that something sucks. I mean, if it's good why does a studio have to hide it? Most guys I know say they haven't read the book because the girly story about a teen virgin, Bella Swan, in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen, is an offense to their macho sensibilities. Despite the guy aversion to Twilight and its three bestselling sequels (New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn), these manly men seem to know an awful lot about what happens in the saga of the ever-youthful Cullen family and their civilized decision to hunt animal predators for blood instead of humans. They know enough to say that the book's lack of hardcore sex is a turnoff. They prefer HBO's True Blood where vampires get it on with humans every 20 seconds or so. Women are more honest about the book's romantic appeal. They can see beyond Meyer's breathless overwriting to discover the book's hidden power: the fears it raises about aging. Bella is eager for Edward to bite her since that will make her a vampire and freeze her for centuries at the primo age of seventeen. But what will she have to give up? So obviously there's more to Twilight than vapid vamping. Which leads me to ask these biting questions:

Did you read the book? And if so, what did you think of it?

Did the Twilight trailer excite your appetite for the movie or kill it?

What do you think of the casting of Kristen Stewart, the 18-year-old actress best known as Emile Hirsch's wild crush in Into the Wild, as Bella? And what about Robert Pattinson, a 22-year-old Brit best known as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as Edward?

Will Twilight be a blockbuster or a bust?

Let's predict now and compare notes later.

I´m not at all a Twilight fan and like most people was dreading all the hype and wishing it were over, but last week a friend of mine asked me to go see the movie and since i had nothing better to do i reluctantly agreed.

I was surprised! The plot was quite predictable and there was nothing special about the script, but the directing and acting was so amazing. There were so many erotic undertones I was surprised it was PG. Practically every scene had it´s own charm.

I was so enamoured by it that i asked my friend to lend me the series. I´ve read the first book and although it´s well written, it´s purely teen fiction.

If you like overt erotic undertones i suggest you see the movie.

To answer your question, I am dreading the damn thing. I'm sick of hearing about Twilight. "Twilight this" and "Twilight that." and "oh it's so 'super freaking awesome' you must see it." STOP! I don't want to read the damn book or see the damn movie. It is most-likely because I am not at all interested in the book or movie, but still. Even the trailer didn't get me the least bit interested. This "Twilight" fad just going to fade away over time, whether you believe it will or not.

no need to diss the author or the director.
the author is my hero! stephenie meyer has inspired me to go after my dreams! the first second third and fourth book were all GREAT! stephenie leaves you on the edge of your chair wondering what will happen next. She has a way of writting that is undescribable. I don't know how many nights I stayed up in bed wondering "what's going to happen?" will edward change her? will bella fall for jacob? will jacob fight for bella? will edward crush bella? She is a fantastic writer and I give her props.
As for Catherine Hardwicke I give her props too. It was hard trying to make the undescribable TWILIGHT world we all know and love come alive. Everyone has different minds and pictured things differently. But she still did a tremendous job.
I LOVE TWILIGHT AND EDWARD CULLEN!!!
AND I WILL ALWAYS BE A TRUE TWILIGHT FAN!

colleen | November 24, 2008 5:01 PM

heyy
my name is colleen and im a twilight adict! i read the series and i am planning on reading the books over and over again. As for the movie casting Robert Pattinson was the best pick ever! No one I repeat no one could play Edward{{my love}} better than Robert Pattinson. Kristen Stewart was also another good pick. She was able to be the clumsy, blushing Bella all TWILIGHT fans know and love.
Twilight isnt just about a vampire falling for a human. Its about the fact that Edward would do anything for Bella including leave if he thinks its best for her. He wants her to go to college, do normal human things. And whenever the subject of Bella becoming a vampire comes up Edward is the first to refuse to agree to make her be stuck in a seventeen year olds body forever. Edward needs total self-control dealing with such a fragile human who can't walk on a flat surface without falling. He wants Bella to be human. But he wants to be with her
Bella on the otherhand wants to be a vampire if it means Edward will stay with her forever.
As far as the movie goes which I have seen and am pleased with, I think it will be a hit. They stayed relatively close to the movie, and had a GREAT cast and crew. Everything about the movie was picked great. From the cast to the music and the settings. I am pleased to say I enjoyed it and I will always be a true TWILIGHT obsessed, addicted, freaky, vampire loving fan.
TEAM EDWARD

Dear Mr. Travers,

We both agree on the basics: it's an OK-not-great flick, and the love story at its core is both solid & the movie's main attraction.

But I've gotta slam you on two points. First, you're way off base on the FX. ILM isn't known for bad work, and although the FX here aren't as completely convincing as they might have been (the folks I went with were especially hard on Edward's 'sparkling' scene in the sunlight), the decision to render the vampires' movement as essentially souped-up time-lapse photography (or, as you put it in your video review, looking like they just moved the camera really fast) makes complete sense & deserves props for eschewing both the flashiness & the cheesiness which usually accompany vampire flicks. How else would the human eye register that kind of lightning-fast motion? If you answered anything other than 'indistinct blur', then guess again. As for the Superman-and-Lois trip through the trees, even if the pair seemed a bit more weightless than they should have (a longstanding complaint about computer animation), it looked good enough at first sight & was over with quickly.

Second, regarding your complaint about the inclusion of all those superfluous characters...well, there you're on firmer ground, since they're there for no other reasons than to please the fans & set up the inevitable sequels. But Hardwicke as "traffic cop"? Unfair, sir! In truth, the director & screenwriter deserve credit for being able to introduce them, have them do their respective perfunctory duties as required, and yet keep them from noticeably intruding on either the plot or & the love story. Eric, Jessica & the rest are just sorta...there, and that's all they needed to be.

Lyn | November 20, 2008 10:09 PM

I loved the first three books, hated the fourth, so after that I have seen the true awfulness of this franchise. Can't wait until Half Blood Prince, at least J.K. Rowling can write.

Texas Love | November 20, 2008 7:56 PM

There has always been that group of people that love to hate what's popular - so i'm not surprised that there are a lot of haters out there. I think that any time you let in to all of the hype surrounding a movie, you're gonna be disappointed because its not going to live up to your standards.

I know 2 people that went to the premiere (1 had read the books, 1 had not) with NO expectations, and both LOVED it for what it is - an adaptation of a book about two people that (technically) shouldn't be together. Its not literary or cinematic genius and shouldn't be held to such standards.

I'm 30. I'm not a tween or a soccer mom, but I love this series to an embarrassing extent. They're fun, easy to read books that secretly find a way to keep you on the edge of your seat. I've even read the manuscript that Stephanie Meyer posted on her website of Twilight from Edwards perspective which made me love it all the more!

I say GO, have fun, and don't take everything so seriously!

livv | November 17, 2008 3:13 PM

i was the one who rolled their eyes at my friends whenever they gushed about Twilight.

FINALLY i gave in and read all 4 books in 2 weeks!!! i just finished the 4th and i honestly could not stop reading because they're all so good!!

seeing the trailers make me SOOOO excited to see the movie i already ordered my tickets for friday!!! i really think kristen stewart and rob pattinson are great for the roles plus rob is SOOOOOOOO HOT :) this film WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!!

mallory | November 17, 2008 10:35 AM

some people read books for the escapism factor and because it's a better workout for the mind than watching tv. all books do not need to be literary masterpieces to be enjoyable. that being said, bella is kind of a c**t in the books, but i'm really looking forward to seeing how they are translated onscreen. i think they could have chosen a better edward than robert pattinson, but i have not seen the movie yet, so i'm holding out judgment until then.

Melissa | November 16, 2008 12:34 PM

Yes, I'm up there in age(40) but I love these books. I am glad to read a piece of good fiction that doesn't include graphic detail of sexploits between the main characters. They give you just enough to let you fill in the rest. So that said, I can't wait to see how the books adapt the for the big screen. The trailers look good and make me want to see more. The one thing that better be good is the SPARKLING SCENE! That better dazzle us. If not how are they going to pull off the werewolves? Soundtrack is pretty good also. Let's see how that works into the movie. Hopefully not just during the credits.

Toni | November 16, 2008 12:07 PM

Well, so far, I think I must be the oldest person to put my two cents in! My daughter (33) got me to read "Twilight" and I'm 55. I wasn't enthused about it at first, but the more I read---the more I LOVED it! I've read all 4 books and I guess I still have some "teen" in my blood because each book made me want to read on! I think the cast choices are perfect and my daughter, granddaughter and I have our tickets bought and we'll be there on Friday night! I think it will be a huge hit and can't wait for the sequels!

Mary | November 15, 2008 6:46 AM

I am older than the intended audience (early 30's) and adored the books, the innocent young girl falling head over heels for the handsome vampire...it's pure fantasy. Twilight was by far the better of the four books for me. I enjoyed Stephanie Myers kind of dreamy writing - sometimes Bella's love gushing about Edward did become a little too much but thinking back to when I was seventeen, everything was exageratted! I am dissapointed with the choice to play Edward, but that's because I imagined him differently. I Am more curious instead of looking forward to seeing the movie...time will tell.

joe | November 15, 2008 12:21 AM

Haven't read the books, and have been disappointed by most vampire movies over the last 25 years or so. Kristin Stewart seems to be good casting (apparently nobody remembers that she held her own admirably against both Forest Whitaker and Jodie Foster in "Panic Room"). However, I'll just rent "Near Dark" again and ponder why they don't make good vampire movies anymore.

Rosie | November 14, 2008 11:33 PM

I think the movie will do the book justice.
That said, it doesn't take much.

Sarah | November 14, 2008 9:37 PM

I cannot wait to see this movie. I just started reading the books last month and I couldn't put them down. I finished all 4 books in 2 weeks. I saw all the trailers and Behind the scenes and I cannot wait. It looks like they picked a great cast. I'm seeing it next Saturday.

Alice | November 14, 2008 9:15 PM

I am also definitely older than the target audience and I love the books. I'm not sure why. They aren't written elegantly, but that's the point - it's more true to a teenage girl's thoughts. Bottom line is the love story. If you get past the love gushing, the other characters get a chance to shine - literally sometimes. Twilight is definitely the best book. I'm looking forward to the movie. I know it'll change a bit and that's OK. It's Hollywood. Gotta go see it. Oh, and my husband has read all of the books along with me. The music playlists Stephenie Meyer's puts together are fab. Check 'em out.

Caitlan | November 14, 2008 8:55 PM

********READ MINE*********
***********DO IT***********

Ok so I've only seen Kristen Stewart in 'Into the Wild', that tiny bit in 'Jumper' and that lame kids movie 'Catch that Kid'. Now I saw 'Catch that Kid' years ago and I didn't like her then, so doubt I will like her now. But who knows, she look ok in the trailers.

Now Rob Pat I think is probably the best choice for Edward Cullen. I'm not saying he is as attractive as the books make out the 107 year old vampire to be, but, of the working actors around at the moment, I think he is the best choice.

Now the movie looks good and I admit to reading the book (Twilight), but I think the movie looks good because, from what we have seen on the trailers, they have changed the story line. YES! Seriously the books fail, and I'm there main audience! (17 year old female). All the changes that have been made look like they will make the movie interesting (except them making James Edward's enemy, that was unnecessary) and more Hollywood, I guess. That's why they actually put in a fight scene, with this the movie will rock because, seriously, that is what the book is lacking. I know she did the whole POV thing but thank good the movie isn't like that. I don't know if I could enjoy myself if I had to see Kristen Stewart with that much screen time.
Another change that rocks is the fact that this will not be just a movie about foreplay as the first three books pretty much are. Especially that scene with her in her underwear, thats not in the book.

Oh and I would like to say people should read Twilight. It's easy to read, probably because Stephanie Meyers style of writing fails, and you will be able to finish it in a day. But once you have read Twilight STOP THERE!!! Do not read the other three!!!! I have read New Moon (second in series) and Eclipse (third) and I did enjoy Eclipse (but maybe that was only because of Jacob and at least someone got some action in that book) but that doesn't mean I could bring myself to read it again (believe me I have tried). The final book (Breaking Dawn) is torture, I have been unable to get past half way, it is physically painful to read the crap in that book. Now I had no expectation for it, as everyone had already told me quite a few spoilers. But, from what I know, that has to be the lamest ending to a series EVER! Even Harry Potter wasn't that bad, and that was pretty bad. So read the first one, no more; they fail.

Rant finished...Except that:
- Emmett Jeep should not be silver. So so wrong
- Wtf is with Bella and Edward's hair on the poster? It's like they have swapped hair colour.
- The school is just wrong. It looks so fake and is nothing like the book except for maybe the sign. And all it says in the book is there is a sign. Not that hard to get wrong.
- Why does he catch her apple and not her keys? And the self serve cafeteria is just wrong!!!
I have plenty more but I should stop, except this:

IF THE SPARKLING SCENE FAILS THE REST OF THE MOVIE WILL NOT BE WORTH WATCHING!!!
Apparently they have been trying really hard to make this work and it better I mean its the only part of the movie they haven't put on the trailers. This is the scene people are going to see.

Siamak Frey | November 14, 2008 8:28 PM

The movie sounds terrible, I read 4 chapters from the first book, put it away forever. I personally can not relate to a young girl falling in love with a vampire. The trailer looks horrible as well, the school looks unbelievably fake, the action looks awful, and the excess use of grey is really depressing. I HATE THIS FRANCHISE!!!!

Kelsey | November 14, 2008 8:25 PM

I am sooo dying to see this movie. im literally counting down the minutes unti Nov. 21st. i've read all the books and i hope the movie stays true to them.

Starr | November 14, 2008 7:19 PM

I'm freakin old. REALLY old and I love these books. They are by no means The Great American Story. They are just wish fulfillment with a hella hot vampire. The obvious preaching by the author of her personal religious views is as obvious as the stains in the talking stains commercials but damn they are fun to read.

I'll be seeing the movie (with my teen daughter) and I am looking forward to it.

matt09m | November 14, 2008 10:20 AM

I'm not excited for this movie. I do prefer True Blood, not because of the kinky vampire sex (not in every episode btw... sometimes it's two humans!) but because of the brilliant character development and plot twists. I also prefer the angle taken by True Blood, where vampires are discriminated against in society. To me it just has way more to offer then a hidden age parable.

Another Josh | November 14, 2008 10:17 AM

I've read all four. Not ashamed to admit that, I have a lot of time to kill in bookstores and like to stay current on pop culture.

With the exception of the third, barely, they're pretty trashy. My biggest complaint, however:

What's the number #1 rule about writing? Show, don't tell. Well, the first and second books are 600 pages or so of angst and no action. Oh, there's action: appearing off screen, recapped later. At least Potter had some cool action moments. Twilight barely has one, in the third book (which is why I give it the pass).

Or you could just read the books as I did as an allegory for the author's mormonism.

Cullen | November 14, 2008 10:13 AM

My first name is Cullen. And now I have to look forward to getting "Hey your name's Cullen like that vampire movie!"

Great, thanks inevitably shitty vampire movie.

Jennie | November 13, 2008 6:44 PM

I was introduced to this series back in 2005 when it was first published by sister who is a manager at Borders. The book was published as a young adult book, so yes - it is full of teenage angst. I really enjoyed this series and was shocked by the sudden phenom it had become by the time Breaking Dawn hit the shelves in August. Most of my adult female friends were talking about it and couldn't wait to read anything by this author. We actually read the Host in my book club.

I am looking forward to the film, but don't expect it to be as good as the books. I was skeptical of the casting at first but was pleased to see the chemistry between the leads in the trailer. I didn't love or hate any of the trailers. Either way, I will be in the theater to see is they interpret the book.

Myne | November 13, 2008 5:51 PM

I love the books i have read all 3 times except the last and i still love them!! if u say they r writen poorly you have no taste!! and i like those "hardcore" romances! they are my favorite books ever! i want to see the movie because the books are so amazing but i dont because they will most likely ruin it... but they did the same w/ the harry potter movies!! if u dont read the books it might be okay...but i doubt it...i just want 2 see it so i can make fun of how bad they screwed it up! oh and dont dis the books/movie if you've never read them ALL 2 dis!!

Eric | November 13, 2008 4:51 PM

I'm indifferent to the whole "Twilight" extravaganza going on , I haven't read the books. I can tell you however, that purely based on the the trailer the movie looks like complete, utter, garbage. Seriously, it reminded me of the horrendous Covenant movie that came out a year or two ago.

Melissa at K 97 | November 13, 2008 3:28 PM

I have never read books that I reread immediatly...I LOVED them and the sweet love story along with the dangerous erotic undertones made for perfect escaspism. The casting to me seems fantastic...the soundtrack is outstanding (bumped AC/DC off the #1 spot!!??) and I will be one of the first to see it for sure!...they just BETTER make all 4....and Stephanie Meyer hopefully gets busy and finishes Midnight Sun - as I am getting THIRSTY for more Twilight!! :) (by the way, I'm a 36 year old woman...not a tween)

Anne | November 13, 2008 1:31 PM

Didn't like the writing much, very over-th-top angst. But liked the story enough to read every word of all four books. Five years later, no one is coming close to Buffy, in either plot, plan, or execution. I always hope for real writing, but I don't expect it until Dollhouse debuts in January. Still, I will watch the movie, because what else is there if you want vampire/human interaction?

Josh | November 13, 2008 1:29 PM

The entire "Twilight" series is an assault upon intelligence. The novels are poorly written vampire soap operas that should have never seen the light of day.

I almost wonder if, it was worth publishing the great Harry Potter books if, in trying to replicate it's success, we are going to be bombarded with this trash.

I am not a religious person, however after seeing all the hype and publicity these "books" (using the word books in reference to these stories must be causing Dostoevsky and Hemingway to roll in there graves) are receiving I am finding myself praying for "shelter from the storm" daily; after hearing talk of another book in the series I immediately went out and purchased a Stephanie Meyer's voodoo doll.

For me the hardest thing to bear (other than reading than damn thing) is seeing Mrs. Meyer's "story" sitting on the shelf next to John Le Carre's (a truly great writer. Next to O'Brian, one of the greatest authors of the past 30 years) new book.

To answer your questions:
yes, I read the novels (in an attempt to connect with several of my students). I thought they were garbage.

The trailer for the film was not as nauseating as hearing the adoration and expectations people continue to heap upon it.

I think being cast in such a film will kill the credibility of all actors appearing in it.

Regrettably, Twilight will be a blockbuster. And with the let down of the new bond film I dont think I will be going to the movies anytime this
Christmas.

Davey Lewis | November 13, 2008 12:29 PM

Having read all four books, I found as the series progressed the writing greatly improved. Because this film is based solely on the first book, I have some trepidation about it's quality. I'll be there in line regardless. I just hope it is successful enough to spawn the making of the next one because I believe "New Moon" would translate much better to film.

Julia | November 13, 2008 11:46 AM

I bought the first book just 'cause I saw it on a book store here in Brazil and 'cause I liked the synopsis (I was looking for some light reading :)

I started reading the first one (in portuguese) and finished it in one staying-at-home-with-a-flu kind of Sunday. The next day I bought the second one and ordered the other two on the internet (this time in English...the translators are torturing brazilian fans). They were done in two weeks and now I'm obsessed. And I'm a 26-year-old!

I trully hope the movie is as fun as the books. They're not that well written, but they're catchy and...fun! The cast seems very good: Kristen is a really special actress and Robert is for me a very good surprise.

Ok, that's it. I think I almost've written a new saga on this comment. :)

Chris | November 13, 2008 11:39 AM

I've never read the books but I have long been a fan of Vampire Movies in general. This one looks decent from what I can tell of the trailers I've seen but it's hard to say. This film could very well be a sleeper hit and we've yet to see that come to fruition. I'm interested in seeing it purely because of my interest in Vampire movies so I'm not holding my breath about it but I'll take the movie for what it is and hope that it doesn't waste my time and money.

aymee | November 13, 2008 9:18 AM

I read all 4 books and truly loved them for the escapist stories that they are.

I was very pleased with the trailer, fully anticipating to hate the movie, as these productions rarely live up to the books.

I think the casting is spot on- Rob Pattinson is a perfect Edward and Kristin Stewart seems to be an equally perfect casting choice. Their chemistry seems to be pretty potent.

The Twilight movie(s) will definitely be a gold mine.

rpattzlulz | November 13, 2008 4:50 AM

"I was convinced... that Stephenie was convinced... that she was Bella... and it was like a book that wasn't supposed to be published. And you're reading like, her sort of sexual fantasy. [...] I was like, This woman is mad. She's completely mad, and she's in love with her own fictional creation. And sometimes you'd like feel uncomfortable reading this thing. [...] It's kind of... like a sick pleasure." - ROBERT PATTINSON

Anonymous | November 13, 2008 4:46 AM

The Book is not that great. Dont see what all the hype is about. Characters are emo/angsty and the plot is blah, no one important dies except the bad guy and they live happily ever after. yay. But the movie might actually be worth watching, from what I've heard they changed quite a bit... Kristen Stewart, she is awesome. I think she will own the movie and I think rob has worked so hard they might just pull it off. We just have to wait and see but id say blockbuster just because the whole female population will watch it.

wateva | November 13, 2008 3:58 AM

well, i just cant wait to see it!!!!!

ITS NOT A GIRLY STORY!!! PETER!!!!

its a story don't label it...

TI | November 13, 2008 3:08 AM

Have to wait and see!

Laubendauz | November 12, 2008 11:36 PM

LOOK, when I hear about this movie, I can't help but think about last years the "Golden Compass" or the year before that, "Eragon". Popular kids books turned hyped to hell end of the year blockbusters that fell flat. If studios wish to cash in on the next Harry Potter, they need to stop trying to be the next Harry Potter.

Joanna | November 12, 2008 11:11 PM

I'm in the midst of reading the series, and not usually a reader of these types, I'm really into them. I actually wasn't as excited about the movie until I saw the trailer. Although I hadn't pictured Bella or Edward as though two actor/actress, I'm satisfied with the chosen ones. I have already purchased my ticket and will be there on the opening day. We will see if its a hit or not, I suppose.

brett myers | November 12, 2008 10:36 PM

pete i got an eye for this kinda stuff and i desperately believe it will be an overlong morose bitchy episode of buffy. have you SEEN the trailer? its trash. it's hyped up beyond comprehension.

Jeff | November 12, 2008 8:37 PM

It'll be a hit for a few weeks or so, depending on if they stay true to the novel or not. If they don't, the fans will reject it and it'll fall pretty quickly, because no one that hasn't read the books is really interested in seeing it. I don't want to be a hater, I've only skimmed a few pages of the copy one of my friends had, but the movie looks like a CW movie of the week. I won't judge the books until I decide to read them, (if ever) but the film....not too interested. Especially when Buffy already kinda did it before.

Maggie | November 12, 2008 7:57 PM

I read the books before all of this buzz and I have to say that I love them. The trailers don't excite me much - probably because it's on tv every second. Too much hype!
I think the casting's ok. Kristen Stewart really fits Bella. Rob Pattinson is good too but they portray him to be more scary in the film.

Bo | November 12, 2008 6:11 PM

Yes, I remember Kristen Stewart from Into the Wild very well -- and I think she's a great casting here. I'm picking some rotten vibes about this film, however, hope am I proven wrong!
