The Seth Rogen Factor: Is He Overexposed? Overrated? Or Just What Comedy Needs?

November 3, 2008 10:57 AM

Give me some Seth Rogen. That was the weekend message from the box office as Rogen's R-rated comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno opened to an estimated $10.7 million. Good for the No. 2 spot. I'm not talking about what was No. 1 since it involves a candy-colored musical that had me puking pastels. I'm assuming eight-year-olds put the muscle into that one. My kind of twisted youth came out in support of Rogen's comedy, even though some TV ads reduced the title to Zack and Miri believing the very word "porno" would corrupt the souls of innocents. Sheesh. What kind of world are we living in? Written and directed by Kevin Smith, Make a Porno (as I now like to call the movie) is far more romantic than raunchy thanks to the sweet chemistry between Rogen and costar Elizabeth Banks. But the big topic on the blog table today is Rogen. Consider this:

Rogen's last two comedies opened bigger than Make a Porno, they would be Pineapple Express ($23.2 million) and Knocked Up ($30.7 million). Does that mean his popularity is waning? Naysayers think we're making too much of a fuss about a 26-year-old Canadian actor, writer, producer and comic who's ridden his chubby appeal way past it's sellby date. (Actually, Rogen has slimmed down considerably to play the title role in his next fim, The Green Hornet).

So if you don't think Rogen is overexposed and/or overrated, let's share some thoughts about what's good about him. From his TV work on Judd Apatow's Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, I've always been in his corner. The only thing I can't forgive him for is co-writing the script for the laugh-free Drillbit Taylor. His script for Superbad gets my highest marks, as does his acting in Knocked Up (James Franco kind of stole the Pineapple). But my favorite Rogen moment on film goes to his "know how I know you're gay" comic fight to the death with Paul Rudd in The 40-Year-old Virgin.

Now it's your turn to vent. Give the moments the show the best and worst of Rogen onscreen. Game on.

I find it find it funny that people go on websites just to make say they hate someone that they don't know. I think his movies are funny and I also like the people that all of you compare him to. How can you say someone is destroying a genre when movies are so subjective. I am sure that more people like the guy or are indifferent such as myself instead of hating him because he is in a movie and your not. The internet is not just for bitching about people you don't know, it is for porn.

moonshine | September 27, 2009 6:21 PM

to Goggs90: is that you seth rogen? comedic genius....ok (whatever)

Kris | September 27, 2009 2:51 PM

Between seth and adam sandler they are the same guys in each comdey film no Difference at all , I know they both suck and aint funny watching pineapple express what a borefest i would sooner laugh at orphan on flames than to see that film again .

CRAP ACTORS AND FILMS AND THUS DESTROYING MY HOPES OF EVER SEENING A GREAT COMEDY LIKE OLD SCHOOL OR GROUNDHOG DAY

P.S BEN STILLER BLOWS.

melledoe | September 26, 2009 7:30 PM

hiya, I just watched a movie with seth in it and I had to google "seth rogen sucks" and I ended up here. I've never enjoyed him and always thought "what?" He's some nerd that is unfunny that thinks he's cool or something..why is he in so many movies? ps. I think me and everyone around me is funny when I smoke pot too....I guess everyone that hires him gets stoned first

Jeff | August 25, 2009 10:02 PM

He's just not a very good actor nor do I find him funny. Just check out his SNL performance. NOT GOOD. He's a writer who's inserting himself where he doesn't belong. (yeah yeah, I know.)

seth rogen hater | August 15, 2009 7:28 AM

So sick of this guy and all of his friends,it's the same five guys in every movie, isn't there anyone else in hollywood that can get a movie made,I'll never pay another nickle for anything he's in.

Jose Alba | August 14, 2009 2:53 PM

I agree Seth Rogen does suck because He is in almost every moive now plus he is not funny at all
American comedy sucks today

Mark | August 7, 2009 9:47 AM

FINALLY!!!!!
I thought I was totally alone here. In fact I had to google the words 'seth rogen not funny' to confirm I'm not insane. Then I found you guys. Thanks for putting me at ease. Seth Rogen is NOT FUNNY at all, and I am so tired of people who talk about him like he's some comedic genius. His movies are not good. 40 Year Old Virgin was the only movie I liked, and that's cuz he had a minor role. He's a pervert and I'm sick of comedies having to be perverted to be "funny". Sex jokes are okay, but his movies revolve around it all the time. It gets old. Seth Rogen is a cancer to comedy.

Mike Levin | August 6, 2009 12:29 PM

Seth Rogen only made it in Hollywood because of his "jewishness." Same for Judd Apatow, Rob Morrow, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Adam Sandler, Jerry Sienfeld, Zach Braff, Rob Morrow, Jason Alexander, Larry David, Paul Judd, Ben Stiller, Sascha Baron Cohen, Billy Crystal, (the list goes and on and on). None of them have any talent - just the right religion!

David | July 31, 2009 6:17 PM

Rogen is like Kevin Smith minus the sardonic tongue, wit, intelligence, ironic humor, or gusto.

No wonder the former is a millionaire and the latter simply a niche.

There are more idiots in this country than smarter ones. Rogen is highly overrated for those of us who know there's real talent like Kevin out there.

matt | July 31, 2009 3:09 PM

Was looking fw to seeing green hornet till i saw this no talent fool is playing in it.
I'll be skiping that movie.

Gentry | July 31, 2009 1:34 PM

Rogen is terrible. Not funny, not cool, and he is an awful actor. Why is someone like him even cast??? Have seen a couple of his films and that was it. My group of friends have code for when a movie is bad. "Rogen" is the worst meaning not even going to consider seeing that movie. Followed up by "Vince Vaughn" which means it will probably really suck and have no storyline so it is a maybe rental.

Bottomline: Rogen blows and I will not watch him in anything regardless of who is in it.

Seth rogen sucks | July 30, 2009 10:45 PM

"Oh look at me, i'm seth rogen, I act like a dumbass and smoke pot in all of my movies and yet people find me still funny" God, the day seth rogen finally retires, comedy will hopefully be back again. The only good movies starring him was 40 yr old virgin and knocked up. All his other movies SUCK!!

Stepbrothers sucked.

Pineapple express really sucked.

Superbad was probably the worst movie that I have even seen. Now that sucked!!

Thomas | July 24, 2009 12:17 PM

I actually agree with you guys, but there's a thing. I appreciate intelligent comedies the likes of Groundhog Day. You know, that old gem with Bill Murray. But sometimes you just gotta lay back and say "screw it" and watch something that will let your mind at ease. Seth Rogen offers that. And as for Sandler playing the same roles in all his movies... His career went downhill when he changed his formula. He could have done Billy Madison for the rest of his life, but he wanted to show a bit more class. So we got stuff like 40 First Dates, and Bedtime Stories. Not class A material, but at least he tried to change up a bit. As for Rogen, he has potential, most of his stuff is impromptu, and he barely even uses the script. He can make stuff up without one and it'll be relevant to the story. So he hasn't made anything ingenious yet, and maybe never will, but he has the potential to. You all need to just relax.

Barry | July 22, 2009 7:11 PM

Seth Rogan is a douchebag. He threw an eggroll at my friend's car. True story. Also, he isn't funny.

TRUTH | June 17, 2009 5:30 PM

I am drunk. But Seth is Fat and Ugly. In the morning I will be sober but Poor Slothy Seth will still be fat and Ugly. We he will always be ugly. He might lose weight. Fat Turd. He is a modest man, with much to be modest about. Seth's mother was a hamster, and his father smells of elderberries. My god, Seth is to comedy what Helen Keller would have been to competitive paintball.

galactron | June 15, 2009 8:26 AM

Seth is a decent 6/10 comedy actor/writer with generous industry friends.

Rashad | June 9, 2009 5:36 AM

I think that Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Judd Apatow are all one trick ponies, I used to love movies like Superbad and all that shit, but everywhere I look there is Seth Rogen and his lame ass posse. I like Paul Rudd and thats it, beucase that poor bastard even made clueless kinda funny. I have seen this path for one tirkc actors before, Adam Sandler in classics like Bill Madison and Waterboy and good shit like that, too reign over me and spanglish those movies were god awful. I just feel that those guys all should gone out on top with with the Dewey Cox story that was a good movie. Jonah Hill should never set foot near any type of comedey movie that fucking guy is so fucking lame!!! he plays that smart ass, fucking loser who no one likes but one guy, you know people have made careers out of one chacter, (David Spade, That 70's cast) God it goes back to the burning question its not what you know its who you know, so FUCK SETH ROGEN, JONAH HILL!!!! I wont say nothing else bad about Judd beucase he wrote Heavyweights which is fucking great!!!!

Wes | April 25, 2009 12:19 PM

He's waaay overexposed. In the past 2 1/2 years, he's been in no less than 10 movies... "Shrek the Third", "Knocked Up", "Superbad", "Horton Hears a Who", "Kung Fu Panda", "Step Brothers", "Pineapple Express", "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", "Monsters vs. Aliens", and "Observe and Report". In a couple of months, he's coming out with "Funny People". Enough already!

Boo | April 19, 2009 12:55 PM

To Anonymous Jerkoff from Dec 1: the people on this site are his audience- namely people looking to go to the movies and have a laugh. We're not getting it from him or his cronies. His movies are shit. His comedy is shit. You are shit. He's no Rodney Dangerfield. He's no Bill Murray. Hell, he's not even as good as Chevy Chase in any one of the numerous bombs he put out over the past three decades. His success is a testament to being part of the old ...... network.

Robert | April 19, 2009 12:42 PM

Seth Rogen absolutely sucks. Comedy has been god-awful for the last 10 or so years in the movies with exception of 'Wedding Crashers.' He is some anti-funny that when I hear Seth Rogen is going to be in a movie I cringe and avoid it like the plague. Who the hell thinks this guy or Jason Siegel or Paul Rudd or Michael Cera or Jonah Hill are even remotely funny. I couldn't believe 'Superbad' got good reviews. That movie was awful. The only potentially funny concept in the movie (ie McLovin) was totally screwed up. Apatow is a terrible writer. Just goes to show you that connections mean more than talent in this world. You can go to any Comedy club in any big city and find comedians that are infinitely more talented than these jokers. It's really a shame.

Angie | April 17, 2009 3:23 PM

Thank you!!! For a while, I thought I was the only one who thought Seth Rogen is overrated and is heading down the same path as Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and other comedians who have become obnoxious with their tired antics. I watched "Pineapple Express" and I thought to myself "How did the critics find this stupid thing amusing?" At first, I thought I was being judgmental but I was right, it's the same ridiculous and juvenile routine with every movie he does while rarely offering anything new. Thanks Hollywood for spewing out mindless, uncreative, boring and shallow garbage at us once again!!!

Richard | April 14, 2009 4:52 AM

Seth Rogan is a disgusting perverted evil person. He makes these terrible films that are disgraceful to the industry and to mankind just so he can make money. Superbad was full of unnecessary bad language. People should know better than to go see this man's trash. Comedies don't have to be R rated in order to be "funny. Hollywood needs to set a better example and make some better comedies.

Ben | April 14, 2009 12:48 AM

Seth Rogen was funnier as a side character. And now his overrated success is going to destroy the Green Hornet for us forever. So disappointing.

peter | April 12, 2009 9:35 PM

seth rogan and rolling stone are destroying American sensibilities. I still like paul rudd though when he is apart from the "crapatow" (some guy coined this on rotten tomatoes) crew

IndianaBones | April 7, 2009 12:31 PM

Nope. Tired of this guy. 40-Year Old Virgin.. funny, but not because of him. And looky here.. every movie after that has him playing the same schlubby goofball. Hollywood: PLEASE STOP ALREADY! Sorry to say, but I guess being the connected Jew in Hollywood is all that you need to qualify for that next laughless bomb. I sometimes awake in the middle of the night, hearing his monotone drab delivery and it scares me to death. Please.. please.. please.. find the next guy, and make sure he HAS TALENT and not just connections.

r andrews | April 5, 2009 9:42 AM

Seth Rogen was funny the first time i saw him in 40-year-old virgin. That was as a side character. But the rest of the movies he has been in seem to be rehashing the same gags over and over again. Recently I came close to throwing things violently at the screen watching same churned out gags yet again with Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Not to mention gaping holes in the shaky at best plot-line. This guy is right down adam sandler territory. ie -play the same character for every movie you are in and rehash every joke just in case you missed it in a previous movie. am the only one to notice a similarity?
adam sandler
Seth Rogen
woody allen
yep! All grossly overrated, not funny- yet SOMEHOW seem to get all these roles/direct in movies. Hmmm.
If i happen by accident to see another movie which has seth in it and he yet again shows his man boobs, I will personally clip a jumper lead to 'em and send a few amps down his way. Perhaps that would bring a smile my way.

Durkadurka | April 3, 2009 11:51 AM

I don't get Seth Rogen. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against him. I don't hate him like Paul Walker, Vin Diesel or some other talentless douchebags I might mention, but I don't find him personally to be funny at all. He has been cast in some funny roles. However, these roles would been funnier had they cast someone who themselves was actually funny as well, yet he seems to be churning out one movie after another. I guess I just don't see the appeal. Someone help me out.

Lily | April 2, 2009 2:30 PM

Where is the female counterpart to Seth Rogan? There isn't one. Why is it that all of these overweight, unattractive, unfunny and sexist men keeps making movie after movie after movie, and keep getting more famous and more money? I don't see the appeal here. He doesn't act, he's just "Seth Rogan" in every movie he's in. I'm sick and tired of these male-oriented sexist films getting such huge releases and exposure. And these men ALWAYS get the hot chick in the movie - give me a break!!

Aaron | March 24, 2009 9:21 PM

lol alright Isabel (person complaining about seth rogan) you just lost all credibility after you said SCARY MOVIE was your favorite movie of all time.

Isabel | March 23, 2009 1:43 PM

Americans are just getting really stupid nowadays if they think that Seth Rogan is funny, he's the most annoying douchebag I have ever seen in my entire life, and none of his movies were ever funny. And I'm not one of those conservative assholes, and I'm only 25 so it's not like I'm an old fart complaining about the younguns nowadays, my favorite movie is SCARY MOVIE and I love anything that Anna Faris does, I like comedies, but none of the comedies starring him were funny, they were just stupid full of cliches we've all seen before and outrageousness and shocking crap for the sake of outrageousness, if it was funny, then I'm down with that, but it wasn't, zAc and Miri was just LAME, and this country is becoming stupider and stupider and movies and expectations of what is funny has gone LOOOOWWW, way LOOWWWWWW, and Seth Rogan is leading all the idiots down that path.

Kevin Smith 'cutting edge'? A Ginsu Knife commercial has more edge and bite.

conarchy hates cubs | February 8, 2009 11:43 AM

Vapid, insipid, sophomoric, uninspired, derivative, self indulgent... The movies of this ilk are that and much more (or less). Just because a movie panders to the tastes of 14 year olds does not make it funny or insightful. Peppering dialogue with profanities highlights the unimaginative skills of the screenwriter. These movies remind me of most Saturday Night Live skits - not fully conceived, poorly written, overly long and unfunny. SNL has to use a laugh track to blanket the tepid response of their live audience. These movies elicit laughs only from those who feel they have to respond so as to look hip.

Patrick | January 31, 2009 7:36 PM

Kevin Smith is the genuine article.

Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow are pretenders at best.

Yes, Smith's movies don't make near as much as those 2 jokers, and he's been ragged on forever for his lack of technical prowess, but those are totally superficial issues that Joe Shmoe gets worked up over.

Even his weakest films are cutting edge in the terms of self-awareness and capturing contemporary thoughts and feelings towards the world. His dialogue is thoughtful (though vulgar) and his stories are original and memorable. His films indicated a brilliant mind and a dedicated heart.

Kevin's lasted a decade and a half so far. Let's see what happens to Apatow and Rogen in 15 years when they're still producing crap like "Generic Stoner Sex Comedy #751".

He who laughs last--and Kevin's given me plenty of laughs.

will | December 29, 2008 9:33 PM

i think rogan is completely over rated and not funny. his fame only came from one man and one man only, apatow. he's a fat, goofy looking guy who can make abnormal faces and reactions. wow! what a comic genius! he's just today's trend and he will fade in a few years when our country's attitudes and expectations of film change, as it does every so often. i could tell he was a moronic fad when i first saw his ad on a billboard for superbad. and as far as kevin smith goes, i think he is at least talented, but his following is waning. people got very stuck on the earlier movies and if you haven't noticed, when he dares to try to veer away from his earlier movies, they completely tank. like the porno movie and jersey girl. he vowed not to use silent bob or anymore of those characters for the rest of his career but after jersey girl, he decided to do clerks 2. there are only a few talented comic film actors around now a days, and the only ones i can think of are the ones who became popular 20 or more years ago. longevity shows talent. fads show no talent. it's kind of like asking, "what ever happened to the brat pack? why don't they do more movies?" they were a popular fad for a few years and that's it. later rogan!

Anonymous | December 1, 2008 1:33 PM

OK All of you have no idea what you are talking about. for one both are great at what they do. Two it sounds like not one of you know and understand target markets and why people write and act a certain way. because if you did you would understand that SETH AND KEVIN only make films for certain audiences.. It really doesn't seem like you guys are that audience.. so go watch a tom cruise movie and study film ass holes.........
Its not like most of you watch Hannah Montana... but she makes bank and is very popular.... or that fucking High School Musical franchise..... the thing is, the market is only targeting a certain group.. now think like you were still in high school. Remember the clicks the stoners and preps.... well thats what film companies do they separate the stoners from the preps..... its really funny to me i sit and study people and it seems like most of them if not all are so closed minded these days.... fucking wake the fuck up people stop criticizing because you don't understand something and become more excepting and open to new things thats what makes art thats what makes movies and thats what makes an individual..... so Seth and Kevin they probably hate you guys just as much as you hate them... so like i said before salutations and fuck your selves.... sincerely.....No..really, fuck, nutt on your own faces.......in the name of film...... fuck yeah.

Anna M | November 27, 2008 11:50 AM

I don't think people realize that Kevin Smith films and Seth Rogen films and all that stuff is geared towards a specific audience. God forbid someone in Hollywood chooses to do something for themselves, rather than for the rest of the world. Both Smith and Rogen are hilarious, in my opinion. Zach and Miri MAKE A PORNO, I thought, was absolutely hilarious. They both totally have my sense of humor and they have that awkward personality that I can totally identify myself with. If you don't have their sense of humor, you're not going to like their movies. Stop over-analyzing their work and just enjoy the fact that they're probably one of the most down to earth people left in Hollywood. A few of you mentioned that he doesn't have the appeal that Will Farrel, for instance, has. Farrel movies are a totally different type of comedy. As are Adam Sandler movies....etc etc etc. If you don't like his movies, don't watch them. It's that simple. You're not going to please everyone...and I feel like most of you guys need to pull the stick out of your butts and just appreciate that there are actors/directors/comedians out there that are still true to themselves. I'm rambling, I know, but get a grip guys!

Manny | November 19, 2008 1:33 PM

Eh, Seth Rogan is a borderline genius.

...Kevin Smith, on the other hand, has dropped nothing but turds since Chasing Amy. Clerks II was the first time I ever felt like turning off a movie halfway through, and I've seen plenty of shitty flicks. I even sat all the way through "The Way We Were" when it came on on cable late one night. But Clerks II was the most vapid and insipid movie I've ever seen. I just could't stand how Kevin Smith thought he was being clever by writing the raunchiest c-level dialogue ever and how said dialogue could singlehandedly make a script worthy of film.

Seth Rogan's best moment, I have to agree with a previous poster: Saying aloud what he was typing in his novel in The 40-year-old Virgin.

joe haege | November 5, 2008 5:19 PM

it's not seth rogen. it's kevin smith. i can't even sit through clerks and that's probably his best film. clerks 2, mallrats, dogma, and the one about the lesbian were clumsy romantic comedies with terrible actors. serious, why does he cast these people that could barely carry a community college play?

versedandvested | November 5, 2008 1:56 PM

this fat turd could disappear tomorrow and he'd essentially leave the world with about 20 minutes of redeeming on-screen humor.

Sam Sammerson | November 5, 2008 11:24 AM

Rogen is clearly a very talented writer for a relatively young chap, and has had some memorable moments as a comedic actor. Superbad comes to mind.

I don't think he is leading man material, however. Despite his girth he doesn't fill the screen the way Will Farrell or even Steve Carrell do. His range is limited and, to phrase it a bit awkwardly, he isn't a very tactile comedian. By that I mean that he has a ridged and often-flat mannerisms that even in the chase scene in Pineapple Express make his acting seem forced. I think he should stick to writing and character acting.

MW | November 5, 2008 10:45 AM

Another example of what is "popular" doesn't make it bad. Zack and Miri is very funny. It doesn't break any new ground, but I guarantee it will be a movie in constant rotation in your DVD collection and one you will watch all the time on cable. The fact that the "make a porno" part of the title was dropped is just another sad state of the bland/milquetoast/American Idol culture. High School Musical finished #1 and I would rather sit and listen to a Celine Dion, Kenny G, and Michael Bolton concert...

You know how I know you're gay, you framed an "Asia" poster.

Good Taste | November 5, 2008 7:59 AM

Drillbit Taylor was way more funny than Pineapple Express. I understand that you probably have to be high to enjoy Pineapple to it's fullest extent, but most other stoner movies still have an appeal to the sober that Pineapple missed.

troutisdead | November 5, 2008 2:46 AM

It is not Seth Rogen's fault that Make a Porno was not extremely successful it is all because Kevin Smith is doomed for the rest of his life to not be funny. He got lucky with the first few movies he came out with but, Jersey Girl? Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? Clerks 2? Each one of these movies were painfully unfunny. He is an extremely overrated prick who peaked early in his career. Only he would come up with a plot as stupid as the one in this movie.

pb | November 4, 2008 11:33 PM

best rogen moment was when he ta;ls to katherine heigl and simulates sex while on the phone in knocked up

congrats to obama

Mother Puncher | November 4, 2008 10:06 PM

anybody who says they aren't going to watch a movie because it has porno and is about making a porn in it's title is a choad, a moron, and should go talk about how retarded they are with undecided voters. Zach and Miri Make a Porno is no more raunchy than American Pie, Knocked Up or Wedding Crashers yet those are all successful R rated comedies.

Matt09m | November 4, 2008 9:25 PM

If the movie were called Zack and Miri Learn Valuable Life Lessons, it would have been #1. The soft American-movie goer wants nothing to do with sex.

As for my favorite Rogen moment?

His rant about his gun being like a 2nd dick in Superbad was hilarious.

Zack and Miri is failing because it's about making a PORNO!

Seriously, why do they insist on making these over-the-top, raunchy movies that nobody goes to? When you see the success of films that portray a more traditional and, yes, mildly conservative, viewpoint, why can't filmakers get a clue? It's just like "Zohan". Very few people want to see that crap.

BHS | November 4, 2008 5:00 PM

Just because Seth Rogen made on not so great movie (porno) doesnt mean he is done forever. His previous 4 movies have become classics. I am sure there is a ton of great material in the future for Rogen.

Sarah Palin | November 4, 2008 3:33 PM

How a porno movie recieved an R rating is an outrage to all the beloved small town, conservavtive, real Americans. When I run in 2012 with absolutley no backing whatsoever from any party, due to my Mavericky Maverickism, I'll make sure these movies are banned. You betcha I will. I'll put that Seth Rogen guy in Guantanamo with those other terrorists. Got to go, I have an election to lose.

Brendan | November 4, 2008 2:27 PM

Ian Stubbs | November 4, 2008 2:24 PM

Josh | November 4, 2008 1:49 PM

Here's a good example of why Seth Rogen is great: Saving Silverman, a movie from several years ago, came on tv the other day. I once thought it was somewhat funny, but after watching it that day....I realized it sucked and that it had a dated feel to it. The Apatow/Rogen movies have dated so many of those teen comedies from the late 90's/early 00's. They are smartly-written, and do seem more grounded in reality than others.

Mike Hunt | November 4, 2008 12:18 PM

People who like intelligent humour mixed with pure belligerance love Seth Rogan. Those who like the simple dick and fart jokes can stick with Sandler.

Jables | November 4, 2008 11:57 AM

Seth Rogen is not overexposed. The problem is "Make a Porno" didn't get the marketing muscle it needed. A selling point was "Make a Porno," and a ton of markets didn't get that--they only got "Zack and Miri."

Besides, it's a Kevin Smith movie. They never do well in theaters. It'll explode on DVD.

Seth Rogen is great. His most endearing quality in his writing and his acting is that he's genuine. Call it method acting/writing if you will, but he's funny and believable in his dialogue and actions. The bromance in "Superbad" between Cera and Hill is a perfect example, and you can pick any scene of "Knocked Up," he's in for another example.

Best Seth Moment:

40-Year Old Virgin when he's writing his novel, saying what he's putting on paper out loud.

JRL | November 4, 2008 11:54 AM

He works as a support player in small doses. He sucks as a "leading man."

Goggs90 | November 4, 2008 10:24 AM

I love Seth Rogen and his work. He is an icon in the new golden age of comedy and will continue to be in the spotlight for quite some time. All these people who are criticizing him now will surely come around in a decade or so (that's what critics do: play it safe).

Now when you say someone is on a downslope because of total gross, then you're ignorant to consider other important factors. First you have to consider how much advertising was put into Zach & Miri compared to others like Pinneapple Express, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Knocked Up. Then you have to consider the budgets for all these movies. Once you do that, you will realize that all these movies are somewhat, if not, a huge success.

Wake the hell up people! You all have to SEE a movie without reading a review first so no bullshit reviews cloud your mind while you're watching.

Favorite Seth Moment:

The scene where he is making an analogy of screwing to growing "pot plants" in The 40 Year Old Virgin.

I really believe every word that has came out of his work on screen is absolute genius to comedy's progression. Therefore, there is no bad moment for me.

Rogen is no new face to hollywood, but its no doubt that his fame has skyrocketed with the help of the Apatow team. Many bash Rogen for playing the same character and i can see where they agree. His character is always a chubby fun-loving pothead with a heart of gold.(Seeing Rogen this weekend in Zach and Miri was actually the first movie i've seen with Rogen where he isn't referencing or smoking marijuana) But although he usually plays the same character, he puts a new spin on it and makes it even more enjoyable to watch than his last one. An actor like Rogen is finally somebody more people like me can relate to. Its nice for once to see on screen without the CGI hard body and cheesy dialouge and see somebody who is as real and genuine as they come.

Best Moments:
Rogen explaing the horse show to Carell in 40 year old virgin

Rogens phone message to baby doctor after not awnsering phone
"Your dead motherfucker, your tupac, your biggie!" in knocked up

Club scene in knocked up

High school reunion scene in Zach and Miri

Worst Moments:
I've yet to find any

Best - "You know how I know you're gay?"

Worst - His dry and unfunny role in the dry and unfunny "You, Me, and Dupree"

I can't tell you why America stayed away from "Make a Porno," but I can tell you why I did. I isn't Seth Rogan. No, I'd be happy if that guy had a movie come out every three months as long as they just let him do his stuff.

The reason I stayed away is Kevin Smith. I thought the guy could do no wrong in high school. Ten years later, I struggle to find anything good about his films. Prurient dialog for its own sake is fine when you're a giggling 16-year-old, but when there's no wit or solid delivery to back it up it becomes stale quickly. Just the title alone seemed like an attempt at a teenager attention-grab. I honestly think I would have considered checking the movie out eventually had it just been called "Zack & Miri."

i havent seen this movie yet, but god how is there so many crazy people out there? Seth Rogen is a genius people! I agree with PT on everything. Just about all of his work has been classic!

Nmar | November 4, 2008 8:37 AM

I would have to say that Seth Rogen is the most overexposed Comic actor in Hollywood. He's funny in bit parts, but man, As a leading man and as a writer, I hate to say it, I could write better stuff then Rogen.(Yes I know, some Rogen lover is probably gonna read this and F me out but come on, anyone listen to the dialouge in Superbad and Pineapple Express? Is the F bomb dropped ninety million times really that funny? That's a rethorical question. No it's not

seth rogen. | November 4, 2008 7:27 AM

seth rogen sucks. not funny. not funny at all. and there's something wrong with his voice. he'd make a good muppet.

Jeff | November 4, 2008 12:26 AM

The best thing Rogen does is he grounds the character. You'd actually believe that he was an actual person. To some that's just called good acting, but it's what makes his films stand out from other comedies. There's a heart in all of them.

The Apatow clan has been one of the best, if not the saving grace of comedy this decade, swooping in to save us from the likes of Jim Carrey and his repeatedly unfunny films (I laughed harder during Eternal Sunshine than at any point during Almighty or Dick&Jane). I liken these guys to the Simon Pegg clan, doing the good work overseas (Pegg, Frost, Wright, Stevenson) with the same group. However, leave it to the general public to get tired of something good when it comes along. Though I have to admit, I've found the past 3 Apatow/Rogen films (KU, S, PE) all astronomically funny, each one was a little less funny than the one before it. Maybe they need a break to come up with some characters that dont smoke weed? BTW, I thought Forgetting Sarah Marshall was Apatow's best work this year.

I'm an unconditional Rogen supporter. Since "The Road" doesn't look like it'll be hitting theatres this year, "Pineapple Express" is my pick for Best Pic. It'll never get the nomination, but it was the only movie I've seen all year long that I really liked("W." was alright, but they left out the part about kidnapped 5-year-old boys taking part in satanic ritual abuse). And who could forget Rogen's role in Donnie Darko("I like your boobs...")?

Ryan | November 3, 2008 11:14 PM

Seth Rogen, personally is probably the best person working in comedies right now. He has personality and fantastic timing. And he's very laid back, which is good because Will Farrell's zany caffinated-hyperness is wearing on my last nerve, especially after the painful back to back anti-funny of "Semi-Pro" and "Step Brothers." Rogen hasn't made a bad movie since he's been on the circuit (Drillbit Taylor was bad, but I completely forgot about it until I read it from Travers). Some day he will probably be overrated, it's bound to happen, but for now, enjoy it while he's in his prime, because he is still insanely funny.

Dean | November 3, 2008 10:26 PM

Best:
As a cop in Superbad, his chemistry with Bill Hader is amazing. He also has great chemistry with Paul Rudd (Steely Dan gargles my balls!).

Worst:
His bizarre relationship with a high school girl in Pineapple Express.

Jim | November 3, 2008 10:05 PM

Will Ferrell got overexposed...and he chose poor roles.

Seth's characters have been great to date. His roles are down-to-earth, clever, funny, yet down on their respective lucks and never given a fair break. People connect with that.

This movie was a poor choice by Seth & Kevin Smith has clearly lost his touch.

But let's be honest, most comedians and/or comedic actors have only a few years before their schtick runs thin and they need to diversify to survive. Perhaps Seth's time is up, but I think that he's still got a few more tricks up his sleeve...

Bronson | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM

The Hotel room scene in "Knocked Up" with Paul Rudd, on mushrooms. That's one of his funniest. And the morning after scene in the Diner with Heigl.

AppleScruff | November 3, 2008 9:23 PM

I saw Rogen's next movie, the Jody Hill directed "Observe And Report". It was funny, but again the movie was stolen by someone else. In that case its Michael Pena. You'll see.

rockhead | November 3, 2008 9:06 PM

it was halloween. their "target market demographic" was out opening weekend. and the fact that some theaters aren't showing it because they're scared of a word could help it's lackluster opening. i didn't see it because i had shit to do but i plan on going very soon. i can't wait for the dvd though.

craaaig | November 3, 2008 8:17 PM

I love me my Seth Rogen. Screw all the naysayers. I have grown up with him from Freaks & Geeks to Undeclared and beyond. I don't understand the hate. It's not like he's making shit movies.

dare kore? | November 3, 2008 8:03 PM

Indeed, Halloween is for drinking, not for thinking. I look forward to seeing the movie someday....

Rob | November 3, 2008 8:02 PM

Seth has been consistently funny in everything that he has appeared in, but that also does mean that out of all of them there will be one that is the worst out of all of them. Zack and Miri make a Porno happens to be the one. Too much story for Seth to have to make funny, the looser the plot the funnier Seth is: get girl pregnant, she's hot your ugly and MAKE A MOVIE, or drunk kids trying to score and MAKE A MOVIE. Way to much romance and plot for Seth to make funny.

Hmm | November 3, 2008 7:15 PM

Ok so first off I don't think 10.7 Mill is a failure, especially for a Kevin Smith film. Second look at the day it was released, Halloween, it had to compete with that factor as well. Who cares about High School Musical whatever, parents are going to have to see that with there kids unfortunately. I think is pothead role does get old so I'm glad his character wasn't all about smokin it up, which is known for Kevin Smiths 2 infamous characters. I think this film would have done better if conservative's didn't get so high and mighty about the word porno, when we all know everyone watches it, but thats the dirty little secret i guess.

Patrick S. | November 3, 2008 7:13 PM

I think Rogen is the best thing to happen to comedic cinema in a very long time. His work with Apatow has showed us that a comedy is'nt neccesarily dumb if it's dirty. not to mention they are more emotionally touching than half the shitty Rom-Com's to come out in the last ten years. I could understand people getting sick of him if he was making shitty movies but all of the stuff he's been in has been great. I'm immensly looking forward to the green hornet, and I'm really excited about funny people, which i think could be a really great movie about stand up comics. so...yeah.

Juan Carlo | November 3, 2008 2:57 PM

Seth is still beyond getting on my nerves. He has released only two, maybe three movies a year, and they have all been hits/BIG hits. I am yet to see PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (hasn't opened in Venezuela) but I'll go for the whole hotel room scene with Rudd in KNOCKED UP as his funniest tied with your pick, and his work on KUNG FU PANDA the most useless.

Julian | November 3, 2008 1:00 PM

One of his best under-the-radar lines: "I like your boobs." from "Donnie Darko". I think he was somewhat overshadowed by Franco in Pineapple, but I feel like he kept that movie on the path of balancing out a light-hearted, stoner flick with a heart-felt story of two friends. Which, in my opinion, is what sets Rogen, Appatow and their counterparts apart from the rest of the comedy garbage (not all of it is) out there. They really can make a movie that has this light-hearted, perverted, profane exterior but still manage to hold on to the heavy-hearted emotion and soul at it's core. Which I think is absolutely fantastic, and something you don't see very often (and very often, done well). I think he was fantastic in Knocked Up, Superbad, and yes, his and Paul Rudd's "You know how I know you're gay?" verbal grudge match in 40-Year-Old Virgin is comedy brilliance.
