Unfinished Bitching

Vacation’s over. With the Coen brothers’ Burn After Reading opening tomorrow, the fall movie season swings into high gear. I’m ready. But first I need to vent about a few things. Don’t get me started about the following topics:

1.That Nic Cage’s stinkfest Bangkok Dangerous is a hit because this week it was No. 1 at the box-office. It made $7.8 million on a dead weekend, people, that’s a crummy figure for a crummy movie.

2.That Anna Faris isn’t getting a fraction of the credit she deserves for putting butts into seats for The House Bunny. She was fab on Entourage playing herself, but as a Playboy bunny sent out to pasture she showed that her comic skills and goshdarn cuteness could carry a movie that wasn’t Scary.

3.That Traitor, the Don Cheadle spy movie, is getting attention it so doesn’t deserve—talk about a premise that doesn’t pay off.

4.That some people aren’t seeing Elegy, Isabel Coixet’s blistering screen version of Philip Roth’s novel The Dying Animal, because they don’t want to see Ben Kingsley macking on Penelope Cruz. Grow up.

5.That Mickey Rourke is supposed be scoring a “comeback” on the festival circuit for The Wrestler. Who doesn’t love The Mick? But a comeback? Please. He was killer good in Sin City and that was just a freakin three years ago.

6.That it doesn’t give you bad vibes that Oliver Stone’s W, with Josh Brolin as the sitting (hopefully, not for long) Prez, isn’t screening or on the festival circuit.

7.That it doesn’t give you good vibes that Kathryn Bigelow’s war film, The Hurt Locker, was picked up for distribution by Summit when everyone else ran scared from the the box-office poison of Iraq-themed fare. Bigelow rocks! Near Dark, Point Break, Blue Steel, Strange Days—she makes most male directors look like pussies.

8.That the summer sucked. It didn’t suck. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, WALL-E, Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder are good movies, no matter how much money they made.

9.That the year so far hasn’t produced anything Oscar worthy. The Dark Knight *is Oscar worthy, so is Heath Ledger and director Christopher Nolan. *The Visitor is Oscar worthy, so is its leading actor Richard Jenkins. WALL-E is Oscar worthy, and not just for animation. The documentary Man On Wire is super Oscar worthy, as is the French mystery Tell No One for Foreign Film. The performances of Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man, Tropic Thunder), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), and James Franco (Pineapple Express) are also Oscar worthy, and toss in Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder) for a nomination. You heard me.

And finally, add your own irritations at will, that indie movies are dying. Maybe the smaller companies are going out of business, but the maverick spirit isn’t getting doused. This fall alone offers movies from David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) , Steven Soderbergh (Che), Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino). With those mavericks kicking down walls don’t bury anything yet.

I loved the movies this year. I actually felt it worth it to spend the $8.50 to go. Dark Knight was a work of art and if Heath Ledger doesn't win an Oscar, then the whole world is nuts. Because that movie was incredibule!
Pineapple Express was a perfect example of incredibule stoner movie. That shit was funny!
AND!
WALL-E was absolutely adorable! :)Everytime someone says something about that movie I go, "Wall-EEEE!"

hopefully the Academy won't be asses & recognize the true talent there was this summer.

Am I the only person who thinks Tropic Thunder is overrated? Maybe it had to do with all the hype, but I just didn't think it was that funny. I'm not saying it was bad, it wasn't, but I would put TDK, Iron Man, Pineapple Express and even Step Brothers ahead of it (SB is not a better movie, but I laughed way harder at it.)

I think Heath Ledger deserves a supporting actor nod, and I think he might actually get it. Robert Downey Jr. was certainly funny in Tropic Thunder, but hardly Oscar Worthy. His performance as Tony Stark is far more memorable.

I think "Milk" is the worst name for a movie ever. I understand the context of the name. Yet, Harvey Milk is not so well known that most people will understand that the movie is about a person instead of a beverage.

I'm not the only one who feels this way. They showed a trailer for "Milk" this weekend. When they announced the name of the movie at the end of the trailer, half the audience roared with laughter.

Robert Downey Jr. gave one of the funniest and best performances i've ever seen in Tropic Thunder. But it will be ignored come Oscar time. He was almost as good as Sacha Baron Cohen was in Borat(another performance that was ignored by the Academy) Robert has had the comeback of the year and gave 2 great performances but it doesn't seem like he will be recognized for either one of them.

One performance that better be remembered come award season is Heath Ledger as The Joker. And it won't be because of sympathy votes. And it won't be because the Academy owes him one(Even though they do, for Brokeback Mountain) It will be because he deserves it. Our generation got its first truly groundbreaking performance thanks to Heath. I was at the midnight premiere. I saw the stunned looks on peoples' faces. I saw their reactions. Some seemed scared. Others were laughing. But everyone had one thing in common: We were all completly blown away.

Oh and one quick question: What the fuck has happened to Nic Cage?

Oscar wins. ledger for being a
straight up bad ass. (i'm going
as the joker this Halloween and i haven't dressed up since i was like 12. is that good enough for you?)
wall-e for being the best damn
animated film I've seen since
the iron giant or the incredibles
(screw finding nemo)
Ben burtt ought to get a lifetime
achievement award.
R. Downey Junior's. irreverent but heavy hitting performance in iron
man (the first flick i went to
see this summer and i still rank it among the top films
i've seen this year.

and anybody who thinks
christian bale's performance
was any less greater than ledger's can suck my balls.

and anyway...fuck the oscars.

what pisses me off is that no one is paying much attention to Aaron eckhart. Lets face it Heath ledger did the most fantastic job and he deserves the oscar. But Eckhart deserves a nomination, him as two-face was an almost divine creation. It amazes me how little people comment on his idea of who harvey two face is.

Don't be surprised when both Ledger and Downey Jr. DON'T get Oscar noms (for Batman and Tropic Thunder). They both deserve them, but they won't get them. More likely they'll both get Golden Globe noms...Eckhart might sneak in there also for Batman.
It's a shame, but true. The Academy simply won't recognize superhero and coedies, which is a flippin' joke.

Elegy doesn't work because 1) it's impossible to imagine the stiff-backed Ben Kingsley as a sex magnet, 2) watching this non-sexual tightass macking on Cruz or Patricia Clarkson is cringe-inducing and SPOILER ALERT 3) the breakup is so completely obviously a cheap plot point. Add the soporific pacing and you have a snoozefest of epic proportions.

I don't think indie films are dying, simply in transition. Nolan, Favreau, Gordon-Green, hell even Woody Allen are all essentially indie film makers juiced up by in-the-know studio heads and given some big projects. The roles might be a bit reversed, with our action movies knocking at our human psyche and the festival films phoning in the formula, but the coming years can give rise to the next indie stars. I for one, am excited as hell about it.

The summer blockbusters were more entertaining than they were the past few years. However, it's still pretty slim picking for Oscar nominations. Robert Downey Jr. should at least get a nod for either "Iron Man" or "Tropic Thunder". Some Oscar love should go to "Be Kind Rewind". Other than technical awards nominations for "The Dark Knight", the only Oscar-worthy nomination should go to Aaron Eckhart. Not for Heath Ledger for being dead or for Christopher Nolan's competent direction and clumsy screenplay.

I can't wait for fall. Hopefully, I will get a chance to see most of the Oscar-deserving movies before the end of the year.

Many thanks for speaking up on behalf of Elegy, Man on Wire, Tell No One, and (once again) The Visitor! These films were all excellent, and it's great to see a late summer reminder to see them while they may still be found on the big screen in some areas. The Visitor is my current pick for best film of 2008 so far, and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) and Penelope Cruz (Elegy) are my current best actor and best actress choices, respectively.
