re: not nearly as interesting nor entertaining as Batman Begins?

Dare we remember that this shit is all about comic books?

We're talking DC comics. Right?

That should be the meter bar, imo.

Did this live up?

yes.

(they all have.. even the one with Arnie S. and a--shudder--blonde batgirl)

i have discussed this movie over and over, and of course seen every preview possible. As far as i can tell from the first 6-10 minutes the performance by heath ledger seems amazing, its the finish of his sentences and mimic that really captured me. Personally a critisism based upon somebodys voice i find just plain stupid, get a grip guys and try focusing upon what this movie is all about. The darkside of everyone.

Since Batman comics became graphic novels in the 80s. We've been waiting for a movie maker that just "Got It".
Criminal behavior, Arkum Asylum, the darkness of Gotham City. Here's to the new movie makers who have left Tim Burton and his like wondering.

Heath is brilliant in this film of course but I hope people remember him for his beautiful portayal as a man struggling with his homosexuality in Brokeback Mountain, as a gay man myself his performance solidified my self worth and helped gain acceptance for the gay community, we love you Heath !

Why is everyone creaming over this movie? Heath Ledger is extremely entertaining and drives the film but without him, the film is a mess and not nearly as interesting nor entertaining as Batman Begins. In fact, Batman Begins was darker. I think the gripe is, if this is simply supposed to be a comic book movie, and people are getting upset that some critics are not ga-ga over it, and simultaneously Nolan is a genius, and the film a masterpiece, than rightfully it should be placed alongside other "Masterpieces" to be compared. This is an okay to mediocre action film.

Clearly, with the premature death of Ledger, there were some post-production problems, and the preachy morality speeches were maudlin. I was frankly bored when Ledger wasn't on screen. I guess mediocrity is the new "great".

Heath Ledger will without a doubt be nominated for the Oscar, but will he win? I guess we'll find out in February.

Thank you for singling out Wally Pfister's superb cinematography. The Chicago and Hong Kong cityscapes are especially breathtaking in IMAX. The praise for Heath Ledger's performance was well deserved, and I appreciated the attention to Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart's terrific work as well.

Manniac | July 19, 2008 6:48 PM

I am 100% in agreement, Peter. Ledger's legendary performance is a defining moment in film history. His Oscar should be enlarged 50 fold and placed next to the D on the Hollywood sign as an exclamation point.

jeffreychrist | July 19, 2008 10:20 AM

I saw the film - damned good. Jack Nicholson's Joker was campy buffoonery and ridiculously over-the-top. Ledger's Joker is a guttural, thunderous work of art.

Hey, White Elephant - they were talking Oscar for Ledger on the set of The Dark Knight - it was the word in the industry months before he died. So, to answer your cynical question - YES.

poo on the rug | July 19, 2008 2:39 AM

3.5 stars, seriously? Thats IT!?? OK sure there are some corny bits like Batmans weirdo deep voice, but um, this is like the best action movie of 2008. 3.5 stars= poo on the rug while the dog cowers in the corner, knowing he done wrong. This mag is officially bogus!

New Hampshire's VH-FAN | July 19, 2008 12:52 AM

I usually either expect very little or a whole lot from a comic book gone Hollywood. I mean, how seriously should one take such a genre of flicks? We're not talking trying to remake a Casablanca, right? So, with all of that in mind, for me, it did not suck.

Star Carlton | July 18, 2008 11:46 PM

It is a pretty good movie. Maggie Gyllenhaal kind of looks like two face witout the accident. Her close up scenes were hard to watch. I don't think Ledger will get an Oscar for this - I think he was good - just not that good. Batman's voice was a little too much as well.

White Elephant | July 18, 2008 2:33 PM

If Heath was still alive, would we be talking about an Oscar nomination? Not likely.

themicrocosm | July 18, 2008 1:37 PM

Watch the first 6 minutes and you will see.

Lazarus | July 18, 2008 1:26 PM

I've been following Christian Bale's performances since "Empire of a Sun" and although I'm a huge fan of his work, I must say that Ledger really showed his acting up in this film. Bale is excellent as Bruce Wayne, but a little too dramatic as Batman. The deep brooding voice just isn't convincing. Ledger, on the other hand was clearly at the top of his game. May he rest in piece.

Julian | July 18, 2008 5:34 AM

Just saw this and although I have a bad feeling that heath's role as the Joker will be sadly over-looked for the the oscar win, this will probably be one of the most memorable movie antagonists anyone will ever see. This role should be up there in the ranks of Hannibal Lecter, Alex DeLarge, Anton Chigurh and so forth.

stupid | July 18, 2008 5:33 AM

Yeah......this is a four star film......3.5 stars is stupid

Mike | July 17, 2008 9:21 PM

Peter,

You are my favorite movie critic ever, but why couldnt you just give this film 4 stars, you werent critical of it.

Anonymous | July 17, 2008 9:13 PM

It must be the greatest 3 and a half star movie of all time!
