I can't wait till next week's box-office report so I can see how Pixar's Wall-E holds up with audiences. Early reports struck dire ticket-selling notes for this futuristic tale of a garbage-compacting robot, WALL-E (for Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth class), who was left on Earth to clean up the mess we made of it. Words like gloomy, sorrowful, dystopian and dull filled the air. And yet this groundbreaker in the art of animation swept in with $62.5 million to hit the No. 1 spot. That's puts it behind only The Incredibles ($70.5 million), Finding Nemo ($70.3 million) and Monsters, Inc. ($62.6 million) in the Pixar pantheon of nine consecutive opening-weekend winners. Second place went to the R-rated Wanted, taking in $51.1 million to show that some trash (the sexy, jolting, fun kind like Wanted) also has a place at the multiplex and should be spared being tossed in the dumpster by the G-rated WALL-E. It's quite a weekend when two non-sequels representing the scariest word in Hollywood—originality—can rack up such huge numbers. But here are the questions of the day for those of you've seen WALL-E:
Is it as good as critics, including me, say it is?
Is it really as glum as the reputation that preceded it?
Will word-of-mouth help or hinder it at the box-office in coming weeks?
Where would you rank it in the Pixar pantheon of nine?
--Toy Story
--Toy Story 2
--A Bug's Life
--Monsters, Inc.
--Finding Nemo
--The Incredibles
--Cars
--Ratatouille
--WALL-E
I'll be debating that question till I see WALL-E a second time. Right now, I'm tempted to put it just behind The Incredibles, though the two Toy Story films have a special place in my heart. OK, now it's your chance to weigh in.

1. Wall-E - if only for trying to be more than the others were. My only problem is how they can possibly continue to improve upon this.
2. Ratatouille - for improving on the Nemo formula, and for believing its audience to be more sophisticated than 99% of films made today.
3. Finding Nemo - for being the standard by which they will all be measured on from now on.
4. The Incredibles - for trying to break from the Nemo formula and strike out on its own. For realizing that kids can handle a little darkness.
5. Toy Story 2 - not a fan but I see a ton of merit.
6. Monster's Inc. - original premise, and Boo is possibly the cutest creature created after Wall-E... not quite the maturity of the other Pixar movies, however.
7. Toy Story - creative movie that paved the way for truly amazing movies to follow.
8. Cars - for trying to appeal to more traditional views, and for managing to make Larry the Cable Guy actually palatable.
9. A Bug's Life - really forgotten movie, I think some their short subjects have been more memorable that this entry. Oh well.

No film has ever moved me the way WALL-E did, except for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Best film of the year? Try best film of the past 26 years.
Few movies are truly magical. WALL-E is one of those few.

I think Incredibles tops Wall-E just for pure entertainment value; however, for those doubting whether or not children will like it, I took my 2 year old to see it (her first movie) and she didn't move and was transfixed for the entirety of the film. I think most of the humor is physical as there is very little dialogue, and i think that makes it easier for them to relate to. A great film to be sure.
twitchkid | July 3, 2008 9:17 PM
In answer to those queries, in order:
- yup, it's that good - even if its sound & visuals (Oscar: you can engrave the names on those special achievement statuettes now) were its only strengths, it would still be worth the ticket price. Add the humour, the love story & the urgent, sobering message (delivered firmly, but not from a soapbox) and you've got one for the ages.
- WALL-E is no glumfest; even at its most melancholy, there's enough humour & hope to hold the attention of viewers of all ages. But I don't mind saying that during the film's first movement, as it establishes its vision of Earth as a post-corporate trash heap, I was moved & saddened beyond either laughter or tears. Hats off to Pixar for dragging Disney along for the ride here...but shame on the powers that be for creating all those WALL-E toys currently infesting department stores.
- in the case of WALL-E, for a change, a movie's box-office fate from here on in needn't be of concern. Enough folks have seen it thus far to ensure healthy word-of-mouth (still the best publicity) & repeat business, its G-rating won't keep anyone away (a worry for WANTED), and its Disney/Pixar cachet will continue to pull in those who have resisted so far, be it in theatres or on DVD. My money's on the smart & accessible WALL-E over the sour-looking HANCOCK, Will Smith & the July 4th weekend notwithstanding.
- being a fan but not a fanatic of Pixar's work, I've got to put WALL-E at the top for putting together the basic elements of the other Pixar flicks - compelling characters, jaw-dropping sights & sounds, a solid & well-told story, strong emotional & intellectual content, and a message worth hearing - in the most satisfying package overall. NEMO, MONSTERS & the TOY STORYs are just the tiniest cut below, and the rest are as OK & as consistent as TV dinners. As for all those who are tempted to check out HANCOCK or who persist in praising THE INCREDIBLES, six important words: Alan Moore. WATCHMEN. MIRACLEMAN. Read 'em.

I didn't actually see a Bug's Life, but heard it was just alright. Seen all the others, and the first five are basically all a tossup for first place... They are, in my opinion all on the same level of quality. Cars, is amazing visually, and although not a lot happens, is a great story about friendship. :D Anyway... Just my opinion. ;p

Why can a movie not be both dystopic and a great story? What about Soilent Green, Logan's Run, GATTACA, V For Vendetta?
Far be it from Hollywood to sell a movie that might perhaps incorporate contemporary problems and their potential, if hyperbolic, future outcomes. I think WALL-E succeeds on most levels. It's engaging, visually stunning, thought-provoking and at times touching.
I can understand children being bored with some of the deeper themes, but maybe this movie should have been marketed a little differently.

'Toy Story 1' is ranked above 'WALL-E' simply because it was the first Pixar feature and was, therefore, our first glimpse of their creativity in both animation and screenwriting. But 'WALL-E,' with its from-scratch creation of a brand new world, may be Pixar's most creative film to date.

Pixar always surprise me. Yet, I always put off watching their movies until DVD or cable. I think one reason is that I don't want to sit in a crowded movie theater with kids. I made that mistake with "Aladin". The response to "Wall-E" has been phenomenal. Mainly, that the movie is not just for kids. That it's actually has some adult commentary. So, count me in as someone who will watch it in the second weekend.
I think Pixar did children-centric movies until "Finding Nemo". That's where they found that sweet spot between kiddie movie and what appeals to adults. The only exception since "Finding Nemo" is the unapologetically kiddie "Cars". So, I'm hoping that "Wall-E" will live up to the buzz.

After seeing all of Pixar's movies, I have to say that the one's I like the most are:
1. Ratatouille
2. Wall-E
3. Finding Nemo
4. The Incredibles
5. Toy Story
The other ones are ok, but these five are the best in my opinion.

Never have I come so close to tears with a Pixar film than I did with WALL-E. Truly a beautiful piece of work, and definitely my personal favorite Pixar movie. Here's my list:
1. WALL-E
2. THE INCREDIBLES
3. RATATOUILLE
4. FINDING NEMO
5. MONSTERS, INC.
6. TOY STORY
7. TOY STORY 2
8. CARS
9. A BUG'S LIFE
jer | July 1, 2008 1:42 PM
1) WALL-E is a masterpiece. Timeless. Original. One of the best movies I've seen in years.
2) Glum? I don't get it.
3) Help.
4) Pixar continues to fuel my belief that the future of computer animated (or just animated in general) cinema isn't limited to the inane, brainless, and tasteless puddles of dreck the other studios (including Disney) keep churning out.
I would rank the 9 pixar outings as such:
1) WALL-E
2) the Incredibles
3) Toy Story
4) Toy Story 2
5) Ratatouille
6) A Bug's Life
7) Finding Nemo
8) Monsters Inc
9) Cars

This list will always change, I love these movies so much....I know for sure what #9, and #8 would be....but the other seven are perfect....but here goes..
#9 - Cars
#8- A Bug's Life
#7 - Ratatouille
#6 - Monster's Inc.
#5 - Incredibles
#4 - Toy Story
#3 - Toy Story 2
#2 - Finding Nemo
#1 - Wall-E (because it's so new and exciting!)
I feel like I can't commit to this list because I love them all. But I will say Wall-E is a different film then the rest more mature and kind of the bigger brother of the group. I'm 27 and so I love that element. I'm not sure kids will like it as much.
WALLEVE | July 1, 2008 12:22 PM
Im saying that the movie is not perfect, as critics say it is. But it is damn close to perfection. I'm 16 and my mom, 45, felt just okay about it. I loved it. It's the cutest robot in film history. That's it. The film's story is okay, but the visuals are amazing, just like the sound effects (no, these are outstanding). My fave Pixar films are:
1. Toy Story (Both the Movies)
2. Ratatouille
3. Wall-E
4. The Incredibles

1. Hell Yeah! It makes me want a robot! :) 2. No. Some of those ppl who said it was glum should just open up to enjoying the simple things in life(like a badass kid movie). I mean WALL-E got us back to Earth & found a friend! What's cooler than that? 3. It WILL help b/c we need more uplifting, inspirational things in our lives as a whole. And I personally think that majority of the ppl look for it everyday. 4. I love all of the Pixar films, so it was hard to list them by rank. Especially since I want to see a part 2 w/ Nemo & the Incredibles. N e way:
1. FINDING NEMO
2. WALL-E
3. RATATOUILLE
4. THE INCREDIBLES
5. MONSTERS INC.
6. TOY STORY
7. CARS
8. A BUG'S LIFE
9. TOY STORY 2
Chris Price | July 1, 2008 4:31 AM
You know what? Scratch that, Wall-E is their best movie. I told you that was the hard part. Just switch Wall-E and the Toy Story movies and there you have it.
Chris Price | July 1, 2008 4:29 AM
1. I'd have to say its actually better than critics say it is because I think it only has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and I honestly cannot imagine anyone writing a rotten review for this film.
2. NO
3. I truly hope so. Word of mouth seems to be good. I'm telling everyone I know and my whole family has went already.
and finally the hard part:
1. Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (they are equal and could both be best of their films)
2. Wall-E
3. Finding Nemo
4. The Incredibles
5. Ratatouille
6. Monsters Inc.
7. A Bug's Life
8. Cars
Jack | July 1, 2008 1:18 AM
1. Yes
2. No, because all great movies have a certain tension or drama to the main characters. You really care about what happens to them.

Toy Story
The Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story 2

Jeff | July 1, 2008 1:15 AM
1. It is as good as critics say. The best family films are ones both kids AND adults can enjoy. This one delivers on ALL levels. Visually and in terms of story.
2. It isn't glum at all. The ending was very uplifting if you ask me. The ones who say it's "too preachy" only see aspects of themselves in the criticism the director was making. Trust me, I thought it was getting too preachy for about 30 seconds before I realized that I was just trying to defend myself. Not that I'm fat, far from it, but I do spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen. The point they were making was well deserved.
3. I do believe that word of mouth will keep the box office strong. I know several people that had no interest in seeing the movie last week, and now that it's out...they all want to see it. I know that's a small margin, but that's how I see it.
Rankings:
1. The Incredibles
2. Toy Story
3. Wall-E
4. Ratatouille
5. Finding Nemo
6. Monsters Inc.
7. Toy Story 2
8. A Bug's Life
9. Cars

#1: Yes, I was smiles the entire time.
#2: No, But I did wonder how fat people felt watching it, as I stuffed two handfuls of popcorn in my mouth and washed it down with a Big and Large Coke.
#3. Word of mouth will really help. I really think its going to continue to do well since its the fourth of july weekend and Hancock looks like its not very well loved.
#4.
1. The incredibles
2. Toy Story
3. Wall-E
4. Ratatouille
5. Toy Story 2
6. Cars
7. Monsters Inc.
8. A Bugs Life
José | July 1, 2008 12:13 AM
WALL-E is not as good as critics say it is. Nobody has seemed to notice that the second act of the movie is rather preachy and meandering, and the plot seems to go nowhere for about twenty minutes. HAVING SAID THAT, nobody can argue with the fact that WALL-E and EVE are, without fear of exaggeration, one of the best romantic couples in movie history, and WALL-E has charisma and pathos to spare, he's funny as hell, and he can play in the same league as Chaplin and Buster Keaton. He makes the movie's flaws very easy to forgive (I, for one, am watching it again this week). And visually, of course, it is jaw-dropping even for Pixar standards. This is a movie that must be seen in a theater.
Will people continue to go and see it? I hope so...
I refuse to rank Pixar's films, but Ratatouille is definitely my favorite, and in my opinion the've yet to top it.
Carolyn | June 30, 2008 11:00 PM
1)I'm a big Nemo fan and knew Stanton would deliver because he is an excellent filmmaker. I'm also tough to impress, but this movie was better than I thought it would be, and since it is Pixar, my standards are already high. Needless to say, it's all the critics said and more.
2)I've never fallen for a character as quickly as I did for Wall E. This movie was never dull or gloomy. It was romantic, but never sappy, funny and moving.
3)I think word of mouth will help it. I know I will be spreading the message, and I can't imagine anyone seeing it and not enjoying it so I think it will have some staying power. I personally hope to see it again.
4)Its so unfair to rank these films because they are all unique and wonderful in different ways and truly excellent. I would equate it to trying to rank your children (haha!), but here it goes...
1) Nemo
2) Wall E (yes, it's thats good)
3) Incredibles
4) Toy Story
5) Ratatouille
6) Bug's Life
7) Monsters Inc.
8) Toy Story 2
9) Cars
Zachra | June 30, 2008 10:25 PM
I can't bring myself to rank Pixar films because they are each wonderful in their own ways. How is it possible that they just keep topping themselves and do so without sacrficing feeling. I had a conversation with a friend of mine today about the humans in Wall-E and how eager they were to colonize Earth. Think about it, I couldn't believe we were trying to pick out nuances in a children's film.
right here. | June 30, 2008 9:55 PM
Honestly I thought Wall-E was amazing. And not only because it was visually stunning. But the fact that I was in a crowded theatre, filled with children watching a movie with minimal dialogue and these kids were thoroughly engaged. As a former teacher I realize that feat in and of itself is mighty impressive.
I didn't find it depressing at all. I love a good satire. Especially ones that makes me think about our society and the future of it.
I honestly have no idea how it'll do in the forthcoming weeks. I hope it does well and I hope parents take their kids to see it.
As for the Pixar canon. For me it goes a little something like this:
1. Monster's Inc.
2. Finding Nemo
3. Wall-E
4. Toy Story
5. The Incredibles
6. Ratatouille
7. A Bug's Life
8. Toy Story 2

Forget ranking Wall-E among Pixar movies. I think it should be ranked among the greatest Romance films of all time. I felt more touched by Wall-E and EVE's chemistry than any I can remember since, hell, Say Anything? I don't even know. I'm not a huge romance fan, which makes the fact that I loved Wall-E all the more significant.
We'll see if it stays above Finding Nemo after I get some distance from it, but for now here is my ranking:
1. Wall-E

oops
looks like your question has already been answered Oscar Rules? :D
Vic | June 30, 2008 3:01 PM
Hey Oscar Rules?,
An animated feature has actually been nominated for an Oscar. Beauty and the Beast was the first and only animated film nominated. It is a good question to raise for this movie WALL E. It was beautifully done and I loved it. It definitly deserves much of its praise.
Zombie | June 30, 2008 2:54 PM
I loved WALL-E, but my list would look like this:
1. Ratatouille
2. The Incredibles
3. WALL-E
4. Toy Story 2
5. Monsters, Inc.
6. Finding Nemo
7. Toy Story
8. A Bug's Life
9. Cars
But in all honesty, my top three films on this list are interchangeable on any given day, and any one of these films I could watch again RIGHT NOW.
WALL-E deserves extra credit for two reasons:
- It's an animated movie propelled by ANIMATION, as opposed to dialogue (not unlike The Triplets of Belleville)
- It's a work of popular art that makes a statement about consumerism and conservation
To "Oscar rules?"
I don't know if it's impossible for an animated film to win a Best Picture Oscar, but it's very unlikely now that the Best Animated Feature category exists. The only animated film ever nominated for Best Picture was Beauty and the Beast, and that was before the new category. I guess it's possible in theory, but still a long shot.

yo, peter. That movie blew my mind. I mean, the theme of corporate takeover might make it there biggest statement to date, and I'll have to see it again to rank it, but really, let's face it, the best filmmakers keep getting better with time, and so, I don't see why we shouldn't rank this their best. I mean, that movie is one of the greatest I've ever seen, but then again, most of their movies are, except for cars, still love it, but not one of the greatest.
Oscar rules? | June 30, 2008 2:28 PM
My fiance and I were discussing this after seeing Wall-E. Not that either one of us thought Wall-E should/would be the one to do it (although we both thought it was great), but CAN an animated film be nominated for/win a best picture Oscar? (Actually, I'm not even sure if it has ever happened - although I'm 99% sure not) Follow up quesiton - If it can, will it ever happen? (I think Wall-E definitely brought us a step closer if it is possible in the rules.)

This movie was beautiful. I thought it was uplifting and thrilling, not depressing and dull. I am so glad they made a film this good.
Wall-E is my favorite with Ratatouille coming next. I can't believe how little love Ratatouille is getting from this message board.

Firstly, it's every bit the movie the critics said it was: and then some. It's stunning, beautiful; somber and sobering at times for sure, but ultimately "WALL-E" is joyously hopeful and transcendent. Word of mouth should keep this thing cruising, if people don't mind leaving the safety of a Will Smith vehicle for something new and audacious. Here's how I'd rank Pixar's catalouge:
1. The Incredibles
2. Toy Story
3. WALL-E
4. Finding Nemo
5. Toy Story 2
6. Ratatouille
7. Monster's, INC.
8. A Bug's Life
9. Cars
The first seven, no matter what order you put them in, are indispensable. They're Pixar's seven entries so far in the pantheon of great films. A Bug's Life and Cars are a cut above, but, for whatever reason, they're a half-step behind their superiors. But, as far as I'm concerned, Pixar has yet to make a bad, or even average, movie.

WALL-E was a quality film, but on the list, it was only better than Toy Story 2 and Cars, which was the worst of the Pixar movies - Ka-chow.
I challenge those who rank WALL-E so highly to pull out the other movies and watch them. You like it best because you saw it most recently.

1. Wall-E
2. Nemo
3. Toy Story
4. Ratatouille
5. Monsters Inc.
6. The Incredibles
7. A Bug's Life
8. Toy Story 2
9. Cars
The first 7 were extremely difficult because they were so damn strong and each sit in a special place in my heart. TS2 I found to be forgettable but not too shabby, and Cars was completely hollow for me. I had predicted the plot during the previews for it and was completely right. Wall-E and Nemo are pretty much completely tied, and #s 1-3 are complete masterpieces in my opinion. But anyhow, they are all worth watching multiple times as well as a purchase in some form or another. Pixar deserves all of the support it can get.

Toy Story
Incredibles
Wall-E
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
Ratatouille
Monsters Inc.
Cars
Bugs Life
Toy Story is one of the best movies ever made (I'd rank it up there with There Will be Blood and Citizen Kane). Although no one gets bludgeoned to death, Sid is close enough. Wall-E is a complex movie for little kids and I can see it falling flat with them, but adults will love it... unless you're part of the 25% that like George Bush

Wall-E is not only the best animated movie ever, it's definitely the best movie of 2008 . I actually can't imagine another movie as original or touching as Wall-E coming out this year. The Dark Knight I'm sure will be terrific, but in the end, Wall-E will remain the much more human movie. I didn't think I would ever say this about an animated film or a story for children, but Wall-E goes so much further than any of those labels. Who would have thought that this silent "cartoon" would quickly become one of my favorite movies so quickly!?! Call me a sucker I guess.

1. Yes - infact, better.
2. No - I was almost hestant to see it after I read the initial reviews using 'glum' and 'depressing' in the reviews. But it is fantastic and inspiring!

2. The Incredibles

8. Ratatouille

I've honestly liked, in varying degrees, every Pixar film, but I honestly believe "Wall-E" is the company's best to date. It's also one of the most original and ballsy animated movies ever made, for my money.
