For most summer box-office blowhards it's a done deal: Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, opening for the hot-hot-hot Memorial Day weekend, will gross gazillions and beat off all competitors. Maybe so. Aside from the trailer, I haven't yet seen a frame of Steven Spielberg's fourth go at the Indy franchise. Harrison Ford, the man with the fedora and the bullwhip, is now sixty five, and some website wags are calling the flick Uncle Festus and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Personally, I can't wait to see how Ford revs up a stalled engine. But Indy 4 is hardly my first choice this summer. Nothing interests me more right now than seeing the late, great Heath Ledger play the Joker opposite Christian Bale's Batman in The Dark Knight. I'm seeing Iron Man soon and have good vibes about what a dynamite actor like Robert Downey, Jr. can do with a comic-book role. So my question today is:
Are there summer action movies out there that attract you more than Indy 4? How about Speed Racer? Or Hellboy II, from the genius that is Guillermo del Toro? Or Will Smith going the frayed superhero route in Hancock? Or Angelina Jolie packing heat in Wanted? Or that X-Files sequel, now officially called The X-Files: I Want To Believe. Can Edward Norton put a new spin on the unjolly green giant in The Incredible Hulk? Can Nic Cage restore some luster to his career by doing Bangkok Dangerous with those Eye brothers, the Pangs? Is Indy 4 really the only game in town when it comes to the wanna-see factor? Give a shout.

TDK looks good but maybe a bit too dark in Tone and it is supposed to be like 3 hrs long as well. I want to see it but Indy 4 is my must see of the summer.
Luke | April 29, 2008 10:04 AM
My top five summer films for 2008 are as follows:
1) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: I wasn't even conceived when the first 2 came out and not quite 4 years old when Last Crusade came out, so this is my first chance to see Indy on the big screen.
2) The Dark Knight: Nolan has taken the craftmanship of a prestige picture and meshed it with the excitement of a blockbuster. Few directors have been able to achieve that.
3) Wall-E: This could very well be Pixar's best film. Combining stellar animation, an adorable lead character, a score by Thomas Newmann, with a song by Peter Gabriel, it's easy to see how great this can be.
4) Iron Man: Robert Downey Jr will prove his status as a leading man, and I can't wait to see him and Jeff Bridges together on the same screen.
5) Hellboy II: I had to think long and hard on this one. The Incredible Hulk has promise but also lots of baggage. Guillermo Del Toro has, other than Mimic, never let me down. The first one was immensely fun to watch, not to mention well-designed, and with GDT's helming of The Hobbit and its followup, I need to become as familiar with his work as I've become with Peter Jackson's.
Jennifer | April 25, 2008 10:33 PM
Yeah, there are a lot of other great movies coming out this summer but Indiana Jones 4 I have been waiting for for years. I loved the original movies and I think the new one will be just as great. I've been counting down the days. Keep up with the Joneses May 22, 2008!
The Dark Knight | April 23, 2008 4:00 PM
I have plenty of films to see from Iron Man to Indy 4 to Wall-E, to The Incredible Hulk, but the film of the summer for me is The Dark Knight.
Dominique | April 22, 2008 3:08 PM
I've been waiting on the Dark Knight for almost three years, so that'll be my main summer movie. But Punisher: War Zone, Iron Man, and Speed Racer all look good so far.
Batman '08 | April 21, 2008 10:54 PM
The Dark Knight is directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and Aaron Eckhart. These actors hate comic book movies and they have stated it many times in their interviews, yet they are excited about this one. Bale says he took Batman only to get funding for his better movies, now after this one he wants to do a third. Excited for a batman movie? This one actually has a very good story to it.
batman '08 | April 21, 2008 9:50 PM
I don't know what the deal is with The Dark Knight being underappreciated. Sure, I am being annoying, but i think the movie looks genious and I can't comprehend other people who don't think so. Batman Begins had its flaws, I agree with the deep voice comment earlier and some of the expositional speeches, but it had it's definitely a step up from all of this other crap. Did you see that trailer? Do you see that cast? Ledger's joker looks terrifying. Hopefully so is Eckhart's Two/Face. This time there is no David Goyer penning, there go the long expositional phrasing, its just the Nolans. The movie looks sick.
Indiana Jones 4, Peter Travers? Dark Knight and Pineapple Express.
Laura | April 21, 2008 8:14 PM
X-FILES -- ALL THE WAY!!!
Whoever said this film would be as limp as the series ending I believe will be VERY wrong.
It's going to do extremely well at the box office and then add even more in DVD rentals and sales.
I Want To Believe there will be an XF3.
Welcome back, Mulder and Scully!
Mike Roffman | April 21, 2008 2:36 PM
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is by far the most exciting picture of the year.
However, I do agree that there are other films to care for, including The Pineapple Express and Downey's much talked about performance in Iron Man.
The Dark Knight will shine, but I'm still left with an awkward, sour taste from the lofty Batman Begins, mainly because much of it stemmed from too much at once. I hope this one is shaped a bit finer, with less locations and more exploration of Gotham City. That's not to say Begins was a bad movie, hardly, but it felt like too much all at once. Oh yeah, there's Heath Ledger to take into account also, which will raise anyone's ears.
Jonathan | April 21, 2008 12:36 AM
This is going to be one kick-ass times at the movies this summer. Here's my list of the movies to watch:
1. The Dark Knight - It's Heath Ledger's last performance and he's the fucking Joker. I've watched the trailer and he nails him from costume to that sinister cackling laugh to his overall personality. Plus, Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan saved the franchise from going ten feet under thanks to Batman Begins.
2. The Happening - you can quote me when I say: M. Night is back and he's learned the error of his ways (Lady in the Water).
3. Wall-E - Pixar just doesn't disappoint. Ever. Members of the Academy: just give the damn statue to Andrew Stanton already. We know that no other animated movie is going to compete with Wall-E.
4. The X-Files: I Want To Believe - This has the potential to be the surprise hit of the summer movie season. Plus, it Mulder and Scully, for Christ-sakes!
5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: In Steven Speilberg I trust. Nuff said.
boogie chillun | April 20, 2008 10:35 AM
this is the summer when the good movies make the money.
Fernando | April 20, 2008 12:53 AM
Honestly, I think The Dark Night is going to be infreakincredible. Speed Racer seems ok, but im a bit skeptical as of now. Hellboy II, im sure it will have loads of great stuff, and will be pretty good. Indiana Jones, eh. Seems a bit interesting, but ii's far from the top of my list.I don't think Norton (the powerhouse of an actor he is) will be able to save the hulk from its own problems, and i think iron man will be one of the best superhero films of recent times. All I have to say is, Will Smith is the man, and I think Hancock will be great. Tropic Thunder, Get Smart, and Pineapple express are going to be comic masterpieces. I'm especially looking forward to Robert Downey Jr. as a black dude. It's gonna be a great summer my friends.
Casey | April 19, 2008 4:45 PM
oh lord oh lord, the rising tide I feel for dark knight will begrudgingly be sustained until its release. From this batman fan (from way back), the relief of batman begins was immense, and even when I first saw the end of that with the introduction of remaking one of the most delightful roles (joker, of course) made me nervous again...I could breathe easy when I heard ledger was going to do it. Then came the trailor, and I haven't been this excited since jean-pierre jeunet and the (exquisite) audrey tatou were set to make another movie together. c'mon, its gonna kill.
how could it not?
Barry | April 19, 2008 1:55 PM
I can't believe no one has mentioned the film I am MOST looking forward to this summer - Prince Caspian. It has that epic Lord of the Rings-eque quality.
Iron Man is a close second in my book.
I think that Indy won't do as well as Mr. Travers thinks.
Sam | April 19, 2008 1:41 PM
I can't wait for The X-Files sequel. I love the original film. I admire it for being more than typical popcorn fare. It is very smart and the character developments are interesting. I'm hoping the sequel will be as good, if not better.
yama | April 18, 2008 8:34 PM
1.Indy is back
2. iron man Downey jr. is back
3. Dark knight : Defining performance and should get oscar nom for the one and only Heath Ledger
4. nothing else stands out hulk but there already having problems with final cut
5. fall , looks like it may be Benicio Del Toro year for the oscar
Nathan Duke | April 18, 2008 4:40 PM
I'm looking forward to "Indiana Jones," but much more excited about this fall's lineup:
Righteous Kill, Burn After Reading, Blindness, Body of Lies, Changeling, Australia, The Argentine, Guerilla, Milk, Frost/Nixon, Happy Go Lucky, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Gran Torino.
And, for this summer: Dario Argento's "The Mother of Tears."
jspr | April 18, 2008 1:32 PM
i would really like to see the xfiles movie BUT i think im more excited for batman...however i really really hope i dont get let down by a tame joker...i want this guy to be EVIL! anyone with me?
Hudson | April 18, 2008 12:48 PM
I've got to say 'The Mummy 3' looks like some major fun. Also 'Wall E'...
anis | April 18, 2008 3:38 AM
The dark knight and indy 4! I cant wait! It's going to be a very interesting summer!
Jeeh | April 18, 2008 2:56 AM
Forgot about Wall-E, but it's probably right behind Indy and TDK on what I'd love to see most.

Alex | April 17, 2008 8:08 PM
Scully and Mulder together again in "The X-Files: I Want To Believe" is all I need to make summer '08 awesome.
Charity | April 17, 2008 7:58 PM
"The X-Files 2 Movie: I Want to Believe" will be the biggest surprise at the box offices. The production team has been extremely clever about letting out tidbits to keep the media begging for more while keeping EXTREMELY quiet on details of the plot (and the always angst-ridden romance between Mulder and Scully).
If it is anything like the first 7 seasons of the show, then the audiences will be in for a MASSIVE treat! I WANT TO BELIEVE!!!!!
TL | April 17, 2008 7:25 PM
For me there is "The X-Files" and everything else. Though second is definitely "Indiana Jones". Indy & Marian reunited? I'm so there!
"The Incredible Hulk" loses me with the special effects. I actuall preferred Lou in green paint.
I'll wait and see on "The Dark Knight".
JP | April 17, 2008 7:16 PM
To the person slamming my bad taste, I didn't slam "The Dark Knight". I slammed "Batman Begins". With Christian Bale annoying growling voice he used when he was in costume as Batman and the constant repetition of the words "fear" and "afraid". Only people with ADD could appreciate "Batman Begins".
As for "Indiana Jones", the movie series was long in it's tooth with the third movie. That was over ten years ago. People getting hyped up for this movie are going to be in for a big let down. It's not going to be "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". That ship has sailed.
Also, if you read closely. I didn't praise "Get Smart" and "Incredible Hulk". I said, "They might have potential." Far from a recommendation.
Anonymous | April 17, 2008 7:05 PM
X-FILES!!!!! YYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHH!!! Show some love, people. We've been waiting for this particular movie for 6 freakin years. It's about time.
I'll go see Indy and Batman as well, but this one is going to make my summer!

I'm JP's Bad Taste | April 17, 2008 6:40 PM
JP slams the Dark Knight, and Indiana Jones, but praises the Incredible Hulk and Get Smart!?!? I'm going to go ahead and assume he's being ironic.
Patrick | April 17, 2008 6:34 PM
I think my list is like this:
Indy 4
Dark Knight
Iron Man
Incredible Hulk
Hellboy II
X-Files
Pineapple Express
JP | April 17, 2008 5:34 PM
I've been disappointed by summer blockbusters the past few years. With the exception of "Iron Man", I think I'm going to stay home and keep an eye out for the under the radar movies that get put up as a sacrificial lamb against the over-hyped blockbuster.
Quick disses:
"Batman Begins" is horrible. Undone by Christian Bale acting and thinking it's more important than it was. So, I have low expectation about the sequel, because of the misguidedly positive review of the first movie.
"The X-Files" TV series ended a really limp note. I sincerely doubt that this movie can rescue it.
"Indiana Jones" movie is for people who are voting for John McCain. People who living in the past. Unaware that time has made what they are doing irrevelent.
"Speed Racer" looks like what it is. A cheesy movie adaptation of a cheesy cartoon.
The few movies that might have potential this summer are "Get Smart", "Hancock", and "Incredible Hulk". I'll wait until see and hear more about it before I decide to watch it.
The Seeker | April 17, 2008 4:37 PM
Indy IV is definitely my #1 action movie. After that, I'm looking forward to Hulk, because everything Edward Norton makes is a slice of fried gold, and Tropic Thunder (not the usual Stiller schlock, more Downey Jr).
John | April 17, 2008 2:57 PM

The MAN strikes again!! | April 17, 2008 1:52 PM
Peter although there are times when I completely disagree with what you say(like Pirates 3, are you nuts, man??!!!), mostly you are one of the best and my favorites when it comes to professional movie criticism.
Personally, I can say as a major buff and someone who justy loves theater going, I'll probably go to everyone of these films except for that Angelina Jolie movie and Hellboy II (but I've never seen Hellboy, loved Pan's Labryinth) and mostly so will everyone who submits comments despite what there saying now.
Hollywood's got us all by the balls and you know it. We can surely expect major quality from TDK and Indy.
Just my opinion but I am a film major.

1. Dark Knight
2. Indiana Jones
3. Wall-E
4. Tropic Thunder
5. Pineapple Express
Tim | April 17, 2008 10:27 AM
Dark Knight and Iron Man are the movies that I am most looking forward to. I imagine Speed Racer to be the nail in the coffin of the Wachowski Bros that was started by the last two Matrix films. I thought that the first Hulk was good and I don't know why they needed to re-tool it (I also hate this re-tooling trend). Going from Ang Lee to the guy who directed Unleashed is a step down in my opinion. Here's the thing about Indiana Jones: everyone is going to see it, but I can't shake the feeling that I am going to be extremely disappointed.
Jeeh | April 17, 2008 9:58 AM
Indiana Jones is probably my most anticipated movie in yeeears. Still, I'm probably looking forward to The Dark Knight just as much. I simply can't wait to see what Ledger did to his character.
If I could see them all right now and had to make a choice, my list would probably look like this:
1. Indiana Jones
2. The Dark Knight
3. Iron Man
4. Hellboy 2
5. Wanted
Danimal | April 17, 2008 9:27 AM
They should rename it "Octogenarian Jones & the Temple of Prunes".
Danimal | April 17, 2008 9:24 AM
Heath may be with the Lord, but his memory will live on with this role forever.
Robin | April 17, 2008 6:04 AM
As a twenty year old who grew up on those films as classics I'm more than amped to see a new indy film. I went to Disneyland when I was seven just for the god damned ride.
Other than that summer looks bleak. I liked batman begin but not enough to go to the theaters and spend 20 bucks for it's sequel. I'll wait for dvd.
For this spring:
Harold and Kumar
For Fall:
Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro-along with Curtis "50 cent" Jackson-in Righteous Kill. 50 can sell records, but can he act with our Godfathers?
justin | April 17, 2008 5:47 AM
watching the dark knight trailer gives me chills. the scene where the joker is riding in a cop car down the street with his head out the window. very powerful. I'm very excited about that.
i could care less about most everything else this summer. indy should be ok i guess and MAYBE pineapple express although i think that judd apatow has been trying too hard to make another superbad or knocked up and is just flooding the movie theatres with crap.
Rene Belloq | April 17, 2008 3:38 AM
It's disgraceful, I can't believe that you guys are pumped up for a Batman movie.
As for me... INDIANA JONES
I'm sure Spielberg will conjure up some amazing scenes that will blow our minds.
Marty J | April 17, 2008 3:23 AM
The Dark Knight looks depressing, dreary and downbeat.
Indy 4 will be classic summer fun (if you can remember what fun is). 140 minutes of action packed adventure and excitement with a light, pretension-free touch. A pure audience movie.
Iron Man looks better with every clip I see.
The Incredible Hulk doesn't interest me.
Hellboy II: The Golden looks like its going to be the most imaginative and inventive film of the summer.
Devinoch | April 17, 2008 2:43 AM
I have to confess, I'm hyped about Wanted. Really, genuinely hyped. I know they've changed a bunch from the amazing graphic novel, but I enjoyed both of the Nightwatch flicks immensely and I'm keen to see how Millar's story translates, even with the massive changes. That said, Indy, Iron Man, Hulk, Hancock, Wall-E.... it's gonna be a crowded summer.
Vic Diamond | April 17, 2008 12:38 AM
Why are summer movies always epic pieces of shit? Why is so much emphasis placed on summer movies ... when all they are is commercial trash. Why do so many people see these schlock movies? It's a sad world when a movies such as "Hellboy II" or "Iron Man" will quadruple the amount of money a films like "There Will Be Blood" or "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead."
Heath Ledger's take on the Joker will be interesting. That is the only good thing to come from this upcoming summer.
Bob | April 17, 2008 12:25 AM
iron man will be the first blockbuster. the dark knight will be amazing. indy 4 will be just like the old classics if it is true to the trailer. and the worst of them all will be the incredible hulk. ed norton should have spent his time and effort on something else. i dont care if he co-wrote it. the movie will be a Dumb action wannabe flick just trying to ride of comic film success. forgotten is wanted, which should be good under night watch's director.
guerilla rag | April 17, 2008 12:15 AM
Oh and as for Indy 4, how much more Indy type stuff can Ford do? I never really bought that he swung from a whip in the first 3 but I figured he could. Now, I'm not so sure. And I really don't like how they made Cate Blanchett look. I don't like them making my Blanchett looking bad.
gueriila rag | April 17, 2008 12:11 AM
Speed Racer look awesome if it weren't for Matt Fox. Someone should tell him he's an asshole. I was a big fan when I was little and that was in the 90's.
I haven't seen IronMan but I believe its already better than Spidey 2&3.
Will Smith in yet another made for Will Smith role? Saw it the last 10 summers.
Angelina Jolie in a role where she looks hot and doesn't act? Saw it after the Will Smith movie.
Hellboy, wasn't thrilled about the first. I thought it could have done a lot more. But now with Del Toro, it's near the top of my list.
Haven't been a Nic Cage fan since, well, Fast Times. He's had some good roles, Leaving Las Vegas and The Weatherman, but as a career, less than stellar. But BangDang looks like he might have some character to him, not just star power.
But no. 1, tip-top of the list is Dark Knight.
SaveOne | April 16, 2008 10:57 PM
The best preview (and the one I watch repeatedly) is the Dark Knight. This "hush-hush" about Indy 4 is getting tiresome. I think that Spielberg and Lucas are relying on the "golden touch" clause that seems to follow the "heavyweights". I sincerely hope it doesn't disappoint.
The Dark Knight is going to be the best movie of the summer, hands down. Batman Begins was what a comic book movie should have been from the start, and I even like it better than Burton's. Spiderman 3 and X-men 3 from years gone by are garbage.
As for other movies, I am going to see the Hulk because Edward Norton helped write it. Iron Man looks like a solid action movie, but if they cut it down too much so that it's below 100 minutes, I will not. A decent movie is longer than this, and delves into CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Anyone looking for a straight action movie is just as brainless as the movies are.
It will be nice to see some quality in July for once. I do want to see the X-Files, though the title is rather odd. Wanted looks as though it will be a cheap movie that's less than 90 mins, which is a huge problem for me. How can they justify raising ticket prices and giving us movies that aren't even an hour and a half? I remember ten years ago when I was in my teens and the only movies less than this running time were cartoons. It's a shame that studios think they can make more money by sacrificing quality for shorter movies and hence, more showings. It pisses me off to no end.
thezero | April 16, 2008 10:51 PM
the dark knight

and downey is going to be in something that will probably be a better made film than "iron man" and i'm talking about "tropic thunder"

1. The Dark Knight
2. Indy 4
3. Wall-E

5. Speed Racer
The Hulk looks really bad.

Do Harry Potter trailers count?
E! | April 16, 2008 10:13 PM
Dark Knight leads the list for me, follwed by IronMan (Downey alone will be worth it), Hulk (ditto for Norton) and, of course, Indy 4, but mostly, can someone please explain the absolute hatred spewing forth on every blog out there? Just throw in your take and move on.
chocolate | April 16, 2008 9:01 PM
Dark knight> all summer movies. Just because Nolan is directing, memento in its self should have garnered enough recognition to declare him a household name. Btw where is guy pearce, FUCK!?
DrAiN BaMaGe | April 16, 2008 8:18 PM
TDK, Indiana Jones, The Hulk, and Tropic Thunder are the only movies I'm really lookin foward to this summer.
I didn't realize how devoid of good films this summer will be. I don't care how many tickets Wil Smith's films sell, his movies are terrible!!! Same goes for Angelina Jolie.
Jon Fav is an incompetent director and all his movies feel hollow. I don't think Robert Downey Jr. can save Iron Man.
Adam Sandler, Wil Ferrel, Steve Carrel, John C Reilly, need to just make one big comedy together. No matter how many times they repackage the same routine, their movies are just stale.
Here's lookin to next year when The Watchmen come out.
travis | April 16, 2008 7:39 PM
i want to see indy 4 no doubt about it but i think the obvious hit of the summer has to be The Dark Knight, although i am just as interested in Eckharts two face as i am Ledgers Joker. No doubt the Dark Knight will change the way we see Batman and comic book movies for a long time.
Andrew | April 16, 2008 7:24 PM
It is a pretty safe bet that almost all of the summer films will suck. Iron Man has a chance with Robert Downey, Jr staring.
Dom Upton | April 16, 2008 7:23 PM
All of the movies people are posting here are garbage. Will Indiana Jones be Oscar worthy? Heck no! Ten years from now, will people still be talking about Iron Man? Are you kidding me? How about Step Brothers? Another Will Ferrell movie where he'll yell loudly (just like all his other movies). And what about, You Don't Mess W/ the Zohan? Seriously, have you even seen the trailer? Pure garbage. Waste of money.
Hawk-i-69 | April 16, 2008 6:17 PM
Dark Knight has the highest expectations for any movie since episode III, Ledgers death gives it something extra and will probbaly rule the box office. Indy is going to be the guilty pleasure. Iron man should be alot of fun but maybe a little light hearted. Hell-Boy 2 could be the best if you ask me

Its going to be like the summer of 89' flashback for me. Indy and Batman are playing! I'm going to feel like a 12 yr old again. Can't wait.
Im not getting my hopes up real high for Indy 4, it will be fun, but probably won't be as groundbreaking as 1,2, or 3. The new Batman-will be great I think.
Nmar | April 16, 2008 5:31 PM
First things first, this looks like one of the better Summer movie seasons that we' ve seen in years. Indy 4 and The Dark Knight take my top two list of best movies to see this summer. And of course, The X Files 2 looks good, Iron Man looks fun, The new Will Smith movie is going to be hilarious.
scottwrites.com | April 16, 2008 5:22 PM
I have to admit that the Hellboy II trailer looks absolutely insanely awesome. :)
Philbee | April 16, 2008 5:22 PM
Considering how good Batman Begins was, my interest is in The Dark Knight.
Joseph | April 16, 2008 5:13 PM
I want to see most if not all of those movies. It is unfortunate that Heath Ledger died so young. He was in my opinion, the most talented young actor in years. But all of these movies are very interesting. I like the comic book movies, but how much longer can Hollywood make movies about comic books.
White Elephant | April 16, 2008 5:05 PM
Iron Man could be fun, but Batman has become a pretentious bore.
M. Komar | April 16, 2008 5:02 PM
I'm more hyped up about "The Dark Knight" because of Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan directing it.

I truly want to see all of them, in this order: Dark Knight, Indy 4, Iron Man, Hulk and Hancock. All others tie in last place (something I feel I could regret)

The dark knight is number 1 on my must view list by far, followed by indiana jones.

I'm bored with Superhero movies. That said, I will see two of them, Ironman and The Hulk, only because two great actors, Downey and Norton, are playing lead roles. Will Smith suxs. His movies are always overated and disappointing.

I don't believe I want to see any of those movies, except Dark Knight.
