I always get peeved when an award is given to an old actor or actress not for giving the best performance of the year. Yet, for either still being around for a long time, not being awarded before, or not getting awarded often enough. To be fair, I haven't seen "Away From Her". So, Julie Christie might have given the best performance this year. If that the case, she deserves it. Otherwise, it should go to Ellen Page for "Juno". She gave a brilliant, complex performance as a teenage girl who is pretending to be more confident than she really is.

I'm there 100% with Peter. It's a race between Julie Christie and Ellen Page, and Christie will win. As mentioned, Linney is one of my favourite American actresses, and I think this is more of an acknowledgement of her work than anything else.

Cate Blanchett was good in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, but not great. Laura Linney was superb in The Savages in a very understated performance. Sadly, not enough people have seen it. Good for Oscar for at least recognizing her talent. Marion Cotillard was phenomenal in La Vie en Rose but the fact that she didn't sing the songs (Edith Piaf is hard to mimic). Ellen Page was fantastic in Juno but hardly deserving of Oscar.
Julie Christie's performance in Away From Her is everything Oscar should want. The entire movie was based on how she portrayed a woman suffering from Alzheimer's. I would be very disappointed if she didn't win.
