Sundance: A Star Is Born

January 25, 2008 10:00 AM

Her name is Kimberly Rivers Roberts. Your never heard of her. Not yet. That's what Sundance is all about—finding new talent, such as Lance Hammer, the writer and director of Ballast. Roberts didn't write or direct Trouble the Water, the behind-the-camera artistry is handled by the extraordinry team of Tia Lessin and Carl Deal. Trouble the Water is a documentary that will pin you to your seat. It's an account of Hurricane Katrina from the inside. Kimberly Rivers Roberts and her husband Scott Roberts were stuck in New Orleans, without the money to get out. So they stayed and helped their neighbors and shot footage of Katrina as she attacked, footage like you've never seen, jaw-dropping scenes of the city before, during and after Katrina struck.

The heroism on view here is indisputable. You never see fear as Kimberly, 26, rushed to help her friends and family. She lived hard, buffeted by poverty and racism, sometimes dealing drugs to get by, but when catastrophe forced her to step up, boy did she ever. Kimberly's star power comes from the music she writes and sings, music that was almost lost in the storm. The moment in the aftermath when she finds it and raps about her feelings will knock you off your feet. Here at Sundance, that moment gets audiences standing and cheering. Never mind Katrina, Kimberly Roberts is the real force of nature. Want more proof? Last night, I visited Kimberly and Scott at the condo where they're staying for the festival's duration. Kimberly was enjoying everything about the experience. What's remarkable is that after Trouble he Water premiered to ovations on Sunday night, the pregnant Kimberly's water broke. Rushed at midnight in a snowstorm to a Utah hospital in nearby Salt Lake City, she gave birth to daughter Skyy (that's right, two ks) on Martin Luther King day. "I guess drama just follows us around," she said with a laugh. And here she is three days after giving birth doing an interview with me, showing off the baby and eager to bring Skyy to New Orleans. Kimberly and Scott didn't want to have a child until they were in a good place. Despite the political incompetence that continues to devastate New Orleans, the couple is going home with only positive vibes. The repair needed in their city has gotten Scott a job in construction. And Kimberly's music has attracted producers. No wonder, a glory abides in this woman's voice. With apologies to Robert Redford, Skyy is truly the Sundance Kid. "Inspiring" is an overused word in the movie business. But with Kimberly Rivers Roberts, it fits. Trouble the Water, you do not want to miss.*

Kim and scott, i hope you get to see this comment. I know its been a while since katrina and i just got cable hooked up and set thru the whole documentary and was moved, motivated, touched and felt very blessed to be who i am today, for the less fortunate, i am touched that there is still those who don't care. I have a friend who left there before the katrina ever existed a few days before and she is gone back now. I am glad that she is back in her home town to help her family go thru this struggling time. You are very inspirational and we need more young ladies just like you. YOU MOVED MY HEART IN MANY WAYS! Thank YOU! oh, yea, "IM Amazing" is great!

Lynn in New Orleans | May 12, 2009 6:51 PM

Kim, if you're reading this, just wanted to say hello and tell you that the Lower 9th Ward is filled with decent people who simply are lower income. I don't know how much truth there is to all the hype about the "gangstas" and "thugs" that were supposedly there before Katrina so I won't comment. I don't comment on things I didn't see and can't prove. That's the fuel of prejudice!

But thank you for what you did for those less fortunate to yourself. Rap about it all you want, but what's important is you and your husband did more than just rapping and storytelling ... you SAVED LIVES. I look forward to hearing your CD.

I came up here 15 days after Katrina hit and flooded everything to help, because I'm trained in amateur radio communications and water rescue. The government was so messed up I wasn't allowed to do much ... despite people dying of dehydration on rooftops! But I ended up staying and the reason: the MUSIC culture here that's so welcoming of an unknown newcomer.

I am from New Orleans and saw the film. This was a touching film. You and your husband Scott is a blessing and you made a very good point to show people around the world that New Orleans people have a heart and will stick together when things get rough. I purchased your CD online and can't wait to receive it. A part in the film you mentioned that yall were not planning to return. However, I think a lot of people felt this way but was a New orleanian always a New Orleanian. I was living in New Orleans East and went to Chicago and when I tell you I couldn't wait to return home. Of course there was no home but I made one. I wanted to be back in the city. Thank God for you and Scott!!!!!!!!!

symone02 | May 8, 2009 10:26 AM

I have watched "Trouble the Waters" over 5 times. It still brings tears to my eyes. When she starts to rap "i'm amazing" i can literally see and feel the story that Ms. Rivers is telling. I think she is a wonderful person and i believe she has many blessings headed her way. i am a big fan of hers. i will definetly continue to follow her in every way possible. She has a beautiful soul.

Lisa | May 7, 2009 11:34 AM

This is far the best documentary that I have seen on Hurricane Katrina. I'm so proud of my people: From Kimberly to President Obama, we are beautiful people. I will definitely purchase the CD and I'm not a fan of Rap music. May God bless your family and keep you safe. Thanks to HBO, the producers and Kimberly and her family and friends for showing us the truth. Let's not forget!

We need to start raising our children and stop looking for the government or anyone else to help. Our sons and daughters need us (the adults) to be accountable and I personally need to start volunteering and making a difference in my community.

Anonymous | May 7, 2009 12:43 AM

No doubt these were tough times for all those involved. And when it comes to survival, everyone needs to do what they feel is best. However, too often people tend to take the easy way out (selling drugs/committing crimes) instead of staying in school and or working hard. No one is perfect but I believe everyone would be better off if we tried to be better role models for our future generations. We need to help our selves when times are tough instead of placing the blame on other. It is destructive to our society to glamorize criminal activity and drug use, even when expressed thru music. Kids learn from adults. God Bless

Black Man - Anytown, USA | May 5, 2009 11:54 PM

Dear Kimberly,

I hope you somehow read this comment. I am amzed by your strength and grace. God has even more pland for for you and Scott. Dont know you but I love you both!

Rona | May 4, 2009 12:26 PM

I to watch this documentary and my family states that I am obessesed with "Katrina". I am a inner city single parent of the Bronx, NY and I could actually relate to the proverty of New Orleans. This movie allowed me to fully understand from someone who experienced this first hand...not the media's version. I will continue to pray for not only New Orlean but Kim and Scott...It made me feel really great to see someone so caring when they (media)says we don't have the ability to care. I wish for a day that I can personally met Kim and Scott...keep your head up because the Lord is truly using you in more ways than one. "God Bless" and hope to meet you one day....

This afternoon my mom and I wanted to finish watching the Spike Lee Doc. parts 3&4 but my mom stumbled across troubled the water and we watched it not knowing what we were gonna see. And im so glad we did. This doc has opened my eyes and i pray for kim and her husband they are wonderful people if only all of us can unite not just in time of trajedy but just to help your fellow man

Janet | May 3, 2009 4:48 AM

I cried, I laught, and I cried somemore. Thank God you went through this and I was able to see the truth. Loved the doc.

Shun from Arkansas | May 2, 2009 10:49 PM

I saw the documentary today. It brought tears & joy to My eyes! Definitely loved it!Gotta buy the movie& DVD!

Leo | May 2, 2009 8:32 PM

Kimberly and Scott, God bless you both and your relatives, friends, neighbors and your pets. I am a 58 year old police officer from Houston Tx. I finished viewing the documentary just a few minutes ago and I must admit that I cried for you all. We came down to the New Orleans with over 60 buses to bring folks back to houston, but hearing the stories and seeing the aftermath does not compare to the reality of your documentary and what you and yours experience. I love you both and I am inspired by your realness and your love for your God and your people. But Scott you are my hero as well, turning your life around rescuing your neighbors and most of all turning our enemy into a live long friend and brother is God's work.

I hope oneday that I could meet you both, just to say thank you for being such a blessing to us all.

Candyce | May 2, 2009 1:54 PM

Kim the doc was wonderful. It opened my eyes to what was really going on. It's on film, the government can no longer deny it. Bush and his lovers can no longer make up excuses. Sorry I just had to get that out. As I watched the doc I saw how strong and amazing Kim truly is, no script, just real. Kim I hope you read this and know that you are a true inspiration. You taught me to not be afraid. You said fear prevents you from triing new things and you are exactly right. After watching you, you have given me confidence and have shown me what a strong, non-fearful, woman does when times get rough. I have never been through anything that can even compare to your plight, and you handled it with grace and a non-wavering belief in GOD. You are my hero.

THANK YOU FOR YOU.

ps. When the cd comes out, I am definetly getting my copy

Ronnie T. Fond du Lac WI. | May 1, 2009 4:23 AM

I just stumbled upon Trouble the Waters and was riveted by it. Seeing Katrina from Kim and her husband's point of view up close and personal leaves me speechless! It just goes to show you that Angels come in many faces and shapes. God bless Kim and her family for their strengh and perseverence! I saw right thru to the heart of her.

Gayla - Houston, TX | April 30, 2009 4:22 AM

Almost 4 years later and I am still ashamed and angry with our government for the betrayal of the residents of New Orleans. I wish Kim and Scott heightened success because they are truly the "unsung" heroes. God Bless!

lvy | April 30, 2009 2:33 AM

never in my life have i been affected by someone so far from where and who i am.

i'm 26, born in Mexico, and have been blessed to have never come close to such a tragedy-- still, i sat here, in my living room, sobbing and experiencing the devastating reality of our government, taking periodic breaks to thank God for the little we have, and for people like Kim, whom i hope my children's children will read about in history books.

makes you want to wake your kids up and give them the best 2 hour life lesson they'll ever need.

Gigi in AZ | April 30, 2009 2:32 AM

I also just finished watching "Trouble The Water" and I sit here with tears in my eyes because I am so ashamed of our government for allowing the people of New Orleans to suffer for so long without aid. Thank you, Kim, for telling us your story.

Carolyn | April 30, 2009 2:18 AM

I just watched the documentary on HBO, and immediately jumped online, googled Kim and bought her CD. Her song Amazing brought me to tears. What an amazing lady! She and her family are truly role models for anyone who has had a hard life and need to believe there is a way out. Stay strong, you will be rewarded for all you have done to help others! God bless you and your family.

tee babay ellis GA | April 29, 2009 7:15 PM

Mrs. Kimberly Rivers Roberts it is clear that GOD shines through you. Your smile is the light in the storm. Your truck was like Noah's Ark. Your heart and courage is like Harriet Tubman. May God continue to hold you and your family in his embrace.

Peace/Love Sis

I am from Picayune, MS (40 miles from N.O.) and now live in Alaska. When the storm hit, I cried as I watched the news from AK because I have family in N.O. and Mississippi. After watching this documentary, I felt as though I was reliving that couple of weeks through Katrina and Rita all over again. Kimberly and Scott are amazing in every aspect. I wish them all the prosperity that GOD, life and love can give them.

Dee | April 27, 2009 12:29 PM

blujai | April 26, 2009 8:56 PM

Thank you for the real eye opener.. it angers me on a daily basis the things that are covered by journalists -vs- the real truth. You composed yourself while telling it like it is- You're such an admirable and inspiring person and your songs are so powerful.

Barbara Lake Ridge,VA | April 26, 2009 4:55 PM

I share in all that the documentary presented. Kim and her husband, and Brian too, are what I consider heroes, filled with compassion. They felt the pain of others and did something about it. Keep Christ first! Keep on keeping on!

Lisa | April 25, 2009 11:33 AM

I just watched the Documentary on HBO and Yes I too was in awe. When she began to rap I was shocked and to be honest I said to myself, here we go another wanna be rapper. This Doc is very inspiring I wish Kim and Scott Roberts and lil Sky the best of life God Bless The Roberts family.

Elena | April 25, 2009 2:39 AM

What a powerful film! I just watched it tonight and was deeply moved by the grace and beauty that Kimberly, Scott, and the rest of their friends and family moved through this terrible tragedy. It is said that Angels walk among us and I believe that I have had the privilage to see them at work in this film. Yes, Kimberly no doubt your mother is incredibly proud of you. Thank you for having the fortitude to make your film in the midst of all the heartache. When we speak our truth the world can't help but listen. Your beautiful light is shining bright. I will tell everyone about your amazing film and powerful music. Blessings of prosperity and abundance.

There is a special seat in heaven for angels like Kim and Scott. And for all of us who are married, were married, wish you were married, or wish you weren't married, Kim's music is something we can all relate to. Stay on your knees Kim. It can inspire and change the world...

Kimberly and Scott... you are amazing and beautiful people.

caroleb574 | April 24, 2009 3:17 PM

the reviewer is dead right: the moment when kimberly finds her cd and raps out her song, "Amazing", is downright spellbinding. this woman is un-f*ing-believable! I wish her and her new family all the joy in the world; God knows she's earned it!

what a story, what a performer, what a woman! WOW!

Michelle - Arkansas | April 24, 2009 3:16 PM

I am overwhelmed by "Trouble The Water". I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and had to find this young lady online. There is no way that you can watch this and not cry and ache for all of the people as they suffered through tragedy and were treated like animals. I am sick to my stomach with the government of our great country and this is NOT what we were founded to be. Tell me how it could ever be right to allow our citizens to die just because they don't have the monetary assets/status of others. Bullshit.

Kim, God bless you and your husband and your new baby, you are an inspiration like none I have ever seen before. You overcame so much and your attitude is the greatest! You really made me reevaluate my life.... cuz if you can make it through all you did and be as happy and upbeat as you are and such a fighter, so can I! Yall are amazing!

AmericanOutlaws | April 24, 2009 2:56 PM

You go on and do you girl, can't no-one take you away from you, you heard me, as far as the navy goes for turning you away with loaded guns is a violation of our civil rights, fuk dem hoes, and fuk Bush, Peace!

When she suddenly starts singing along with her song, I was stunned.... talk about 'coming from the heart'. Amazing talent in an obviously extraordinary person.
Best documentary ever... and the music is incredible. Best of luck to Scott, Kimberly, and Skky!!

Jane Dora | February 25, 2009 7:31 PM

I was humbled by the documentary made and put together by Scott and Kimberly Rivers. I was in tears. Couldn't believe it was America. Their story struck a cord. Nothing I have seen compares to the true nature of this couple, their loyalty, sense of worth and their kindness. Asking for absolutely nothing in return.

Always thanking God. Seeing the positive side of their experience. Simpe people, doing extraordinary things for their community. Loving people and loving each other. Staying upbeat all the way.

Theirs is not about material things. Its about being accountable, extending themselves and rallying together. They deserve everything great that comes out of making this documentary public. I don't think there's anyone who would not be touched by it.

Amy | February 25, 2009 2:21 PM

Unreal. What a documentary, saw it last night and it shocked me. How much was kept secret and how the media didn't give it the coverage it deserved. Another fuck up by Bush. Hope you do well from this and girl you don't me to tell you that you're amazing...
Love from Eire.

I was truly touched by watching the story of hurricane katrina through Kimberley! it was happy, sad, emotional all in one. i was so moved by her positive outlook on life imagine someone like herself going through so much in life yet she still kept her faith in god and remained focused on trying to live a good life! yet here in times like this there are so many young people today getting involved in knife crime, gun crime taking their lives for granted! it truly makes you think ! This Show was amazing needs to come on Channel 4 so many more people can get to see it

Kerry NE England | February 25, 2009 3:14 AM

I saw the first screening of this film at Sundance. Trouble the Water is the most moving thing I have seen in a long, long time. The fact that all the footage is real and the story uncontrived is what makes it so compelling. The movie is able to shed light on our country's inefficient disaster relief program without being preachy or feeling like propaganda.

I cannot wait until this is released in theaters so that it can be seen by everyone!!!
