From the Issue: Bush Apologizes (We Wish)

George W. finally leaves the White House on January 20th. But before he escapes, Rolling Stone nabbed an "interview" in which Bush came clean — on his daddy issues, Condi's farts and the time Dick waterboarded the houseboy:

Let's talk about August 6th, 2001. That's the day you got a memo warning about plans for possible attacks by Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. What were you doing that day? I'll be honest with you. I was at the ranch, on vacation. I was watching the Hall of Fame game on TV. First NFL preseason game of the year, hate to miss it, you know?

Ah, the reason I was censored was I preemptively derided Matt for appearing (by page 9 of TGD) to be heading towards calling the "reinvestigate" crowd loonies. Sorry, Matt, but assuming the worst of the Bushies even when the claims about them seems extreme was always a winning position. I haven't read the rest, but the people who think Bush & co did 9/11 have a LOT of good reasons, to the point where someone who dismisses or pooh-poohs the idea is ignorant (and silly), or just working for Bush's future (against that of the USA.)

ecsd | February 8, 2009 6:29 PM

against humanity, sorry.

ecsd | February 8, 2009 6:28 PM

9/11 must be reinvestigated by people who intend to get to the truth, and who are armed with all the authority needed to bypass the walls of secrecy. Half the country thinks the Neocons themselves did 9/11, so just in case that's true, why not prove that in time for Bush's trials for War Crimes and Crimes for Humanity?

It seems calls for 9/11 to be reinvestigated are embarrassing, my prior post here to that effect was suppressed.

Eric Dynamic | February 7, 2009 6:24 PM

No means of sending email to Matt Taibbi ... so I will tell him here. I'm on page 12 of the new edition of The Great Derangement, and it appears Matt wishes to dismiss those whose want a reinvestigation of 9/11 as crackpots. Congratulations, Matt, for running with Right-Wing Propaganda to reinforce the idea that demanding true accountability for profound events makes one a "nutcase". With at least a dozen books in print showing how assuming the Neocons & pals did 9/11 is entirely reasonable, evidently Matt decided it would be easier to write what he thinks, rather than worry what other people actually know.

Even if 2/3 of the "9/11 Truth" people are "flaky", they're asking a serious question that deserves a serious response.

I'm one of the half of the people in this country who think 9/11 was an inside job. Who really did it? We'd like to know. We do know that the 9/11 Commission was a whitewash - insiders investigating insiders with the stated intended outcome of not holding anyone responsible for what they wished us to think were "failures". We do have direct photographic evidence that shows that the official story cannot be true.

So I'd like the thing reinvestigated - on the OFF CHANCE that we will be able to find out for sure who did it, and put those people in jail. That's not too much to ask, and it doesn't make me crazy.

I'll finish the book, but if it keeps asserting that trying to get to the truth about 9/11 is something only "whack-jobs" want, then Taibbi is a pathetic analyst whose works should be ignored. Anything that impedes getting at the truth is the enemy of conscience and reason. If as I assume, it can be shown that G.W.Bush DID KNOW in advance about 9/11 (proving this will include proving Cheney also knew), then we'll have a LOT MORE to prosecute Bush for than his current list of treasonous and impeachable offenses.

The American People (and all the people on planet Earth) deserve to know the full truth of what 9/11 was and how it happened. In my opinion the only people arguing against a reinvestigation have a vested interest in keeping people ignorant of the truth - so please, Matt, do not end up on that side of things. Read "The War on Truth" and "The War on Freedom" by Nafeez Ahmed, and then ask yourself if assuming the worst of the Neocons still seems silly.

lazz | February 7, 2009 11:49 AM

Hey MagicRat if you really do/did have a RS subscription or if you've actually ever read an issue you'd know that RS has never been just a "music magazine".

Tom | February 5, 2009 8:46 PM

wow, some people really dislike gonzo journalism. I never knew anyone could get so damn upset over a fictitious magazine article. These aren't written to be taken seriously. Did Hunter Thompson have to take this kind of abuse? I personally found it fantastically funny in its own outlandish way. Keep it up Matt, gonzo is a half extinct art form.
As for the people who throw a conniption shit-fit over this article, especially the "wife/mom from northern california"...really? you're going to get that upset? We aren't in the fourth grade, ladies and gentlemen, we are rational adults. I understand that the internet has given you a safe environment to show just how angry you can get, but this kind of uncalled-for rage is something I would expect from a toddler.

HK | January 29, 2009 11:20 PM

When I first read through these comments I couldn't help but luagh and feel kind of bad for you(Taibbi)! Woah people say some pretty harsh things defending a man responsible for the majority of shitty things that have resulted from his lack of qualification to lead a nation! I mean come on, during Bush's administration we have gone to war, are in an immence amount of debt, econmic crisis, and oh yeah nobody likes us!(The list can go on forever!) I find it difficult to defend Bush after the shit hole he has kinda led us to.

Some things in the article did push it a little.(The Manny and the Michael Brown thing were a little fatuous) I thought that over all this wasn't that bad of an article. I found it humorous and enjoyed most of it.

AK | January 27, 2009 11:10 AM

It was funny not real but funny
lighten up people...its simple you dont like dont read.

Rob | January 27, 2009 8:25 AM

You got nothing left Matt - NOTHING.

TS | January 26, 2009 6:09 PM

OK, so you know how to ruin someones day!! I am a typical wife/mom in Northern California who made the mistake of reading this copy of Rolling Stone; one my Husband picked up from the local market. NEVER AGAIN!!!! A day later, after scouring your magazine for a "disclaimer" I waste my time reading these blogs, and realize that you were "joking", Were you?

If you randomly picked me off the street, I'd be the most liberal, anti-Bushy you could find, but this article actually made me feel like laughing while throwing up! I am not a regular reader of the mag any more (subscription ran out 20 years ago, thank Jah!) so there were not enough, obvious clues that this was "just a joke". For those who are not familiar with your form of journalism, this WAS PROOF of how horrid our leaders really were during their rule of the last eight years; what we always suspected, and knew deep down in our hearts!!

I am NOT stupid or naive! I AM honest, smart, and appreciative of the power of a journalists' right to "freedom of speach". You have stepped WAY over that boundary, and abused that freedom!! Taking advantage of Bush's stupidity is one thing, but I would NOT be unhappy if you "paid dearly" professionally and legally for your "humorous" quips and so-called "truths"!

You abused your readers as well. By putting quotes around the word "interview" and including on the magazine cover "The Farewell Interview We Wish He'd Give" are NOT obvious enough that this was a joke! Where was it mentioned during the body of the "article"?
No wonder our society is SO violent and our kids are damaged "beyond repair", when the violence, swearing, and lack of intelligence shown by our "Leaders" is magnified and turned into entertainment! Isn't the truth pitiful enough for you? Sad, sad you.

Next time you mention that someone has murdered a minority, who is also a child, make sure it's the truth! It is NOT entertainment to most of us! YOU ARE A VERY ILL PERSON! GET HELP!!!

Taki | January 25, 2009 6:55 PM

While I am one of millions happy to see George W. Bush leave the White House, this "interview" wallows in the same irresponsible ignorance for which we came to despise the Bush administration as a whole.

Call it parody or satire, trying to feel better by repeating the mistakes you seek to criticize [albeit in a mocking way] is another legacy of which many of us have tired.

Rather than feeling superior, now would be a time to act it.

Taibbi Apologizes

Mac | January 18, 2009 5:36 PM

It likes Matt Bai has replaced Matt Taibbi. They even look alike!

What a shame.

B | January 17, 2009 8:34 PM

It's hard to believe you managed to write about Condi's fart and didn't include one of the numerous stories about the president's mother breaking crystal with one of her queefs.

High society at its best!

A | January 17, 2009 1:16 PM

I was wondering....I only read RS every once in a while, so I didn't know much about the writers. After reading this, I just had to find out if some of these things were real. Afterwords I felt pretty stupid. So thanks for making me feel THAT way. Maybe if someone is going to write stuff like this then they should put a side note that it's fiction or something. But then again, I'm probably just an idiot.

dr lava | January 17, 2009 6:52 AM

I have been waiting for this since Matts interview with Lionel a month ago. It is fucking hilarious. I did not expect the level of idiocracy in the above comments however.

Did someone post a teaser about the evil Taibbi at Red State?

I love how Matt plumbs the secondary and tertiary levels of Bushs' psychosis.

I am referring to the printed version. Gotta link to this at some fundy blogs.

Sid | January 16, 2009 2:51 PM

RS has turned into a cross between Spin & Mad Magazine. Shame on you Mr. Dana.

knotcomesloose | January 16, 2009 3:15 AM

WOw- It's the best thing he's ever written- and even its not true. For a guy that fakes sincerity by writing only on topics with which he has an extreme bias towards, this one almost felt real. Knowing that it's not true just makes me feel sorry for the poor guy. I mean, and I'm pretty sure, he probably thinks it really happened by now. Don't worry little guy, maybe you'll get it next time.

Dave | January 15, 2009 11:28 PM

if you're honestly dumb enough to think Taibbi's article is real then you should fucking die

Roberts | January 15, 2009 11:02 PM

I think the only reason this article caught my eye is the fact that the title was "Bush Apologizes". Bush doesn't apologize, because according to him he doesn't do anything wrong....ever! Why can't he just admit that he's in over his head in Iraq? It's not the job of the U.S. to fix all the worlds problems, although we sure do try. What about our problems here at home? We have to fix ourselves (and our corrupt politicians) before we can fix every other country in the world.

Adam | January 15, 2009 5:31 PM

Brick,

It's my understanding that people aren't up in arms about the Bush-bashing, but rather Taibbi mortgaging his credibility as a political writer to score some cheap laughs and/or a cover story.

Charles Perry | January 15, 2009 12:07 PM

I just want to know if this article is verbatum so I can make sure that when I deliver it too all the right wing people at my office it is accurate. If it is, we really need to revamp the election process. This article is down right scarry.

Coach | January 14, 2009 6:07 PM

Boy, you people need to take a deep breath.

First, why SHOULDN'T Rolling Stone write about the least popular president since polling began?

Second, if the guy is the least popular, it means he probably did a pretty shitty job, right? So, much of the criticism is deserved.

Third, can we refrain from the un-American nonsense? You Bush apologists supported Sarah Palin even though she wanted to cede from the Union. Now, isn't THAT the definition of un-American?

Fourth, although the article may not have been funny enough for some people, the jist if it was classic.

Face it. George W. Bush is the equivalent of a rodeo clown. Period. There is absolutely zero justification for the things he's done.

Cory | January 14, 2009 4:44 PM

Taibbi's piece might have made for fine column fodder, but it was not cover-worthy. (Though I'd have been hard-pressed to find a story this ish that would've been--it was depressingly light.)

Un-American | January 14, 2009 4:18 PM

An Army Wife,

The most American behavior is that of dissent and skepticism towards authority. It is the very act that created this nation. It is the very basis of our Constitution.

Do us all a favor and stop quoting Murdock's lackeys on what it means to be American and start insisting on American leaders to live up to their office. Wanting American leaders to be great is good, but believing they are regardless of reality because of that desire is the very thing that permits that distinction to be necessary.

BrickSykes | January 14, 2009 3:46 PM

I knew as I was reading this piece that Matt would arouse a veritable "ShitStorm" from the BushBots who read RS, so I'm not surprised by the several I've read down below. I also felt Matt was saying some things that could get him in real trouble. I hope I'm wrong.

What he has written has taken a lot of guts though some will insist it is 'garbage', and many have. Sometimes the 'Truth' sounds like 'garbage' because it describes acts that are correspondingly low. George Bush's conduct for the last eight years has shown, without question, that he was never, ever qualified to occupy the White House, and that he deserves every bit of Matt's, and my, disdain!

George Bush's image, i.e., photograph, likeness, presence, etc., simply makes me want to hide my head in shame. He is the most un-American citizen I've ever experienced on the National scene, and is a disgrace to the Office of the Presidency!

Brick

Wow | January 13, 2009 3:23 AM

It's funny people think this "might" be real. It's obvious that it isn't, but even so, I laughed more at the comments than I did at the actual article.

It wasn't offensive in the least bit, it lacked something . . . oh, right, humor. It just wasn't funny. Not even smart. I'm the biggest Bush hater and I'm having a hard time finding something redeeming about an article that could have been absolutely brilliant.

An Army Wife | January 12, 2009 6:08 PM

This is the definition of Un-American and to think my husband risks his life for your freedom to write such literary garbage....I suppose you think you would do such a superbly better job at keeping our Nation safe, eh? I think not...until you sit in a place in which you must guard the gates of freedom...regard those that do with some respect....deep inside one day, even you will be judged on your acts and words....we all will.

depressing comments from: | January 12, 2009 3:03 PM

1. Those of you that even suspect that this interview is real.

2. Those of you who think that a fictional interview should be completely unrealistic.

Torey | January 12, 2009 9:15 AM

Let all readers know if this is real! I hope it was so the dumb conservatives who voted him in twice really know what most of us did already before this interview.

Please confirm the interview.

Dan | January 12, 2009 8:53 AM

I'm sorry, but if you're going to pull this interview straight out of your ass, it ought to be a lot funnier than this. I mean, come on. What have you been doing this past month and a half?

Barry B. | January 11, 2009 4:43 PM

Your Bush interview was all BULLSHIT wasn't it? Taibbi, have the guts to admit this was Yellow journalism.

It was, right matt? You have NO CREDIBILITY now.

JF | January 11, 2009 11:18 AM

Matt, after reading your attempt at imaginative comedy, all I can say buddy is don't give up your day job as an Obama cheerleader, you're much better at that than you are at "comic" fiction. I mean seriously, that Condi "fart" joke? Man, that was pure unexpected genius. I mean first of all, anytime anyone farts, it's always funny. Seriously. But Taibbi shows his real genius when he doesn't just have anyone fart, but he has the straight-laced figure, Condi Rice--who's so much not the person you imagine farting--but in Taibbi's comic genius, SHE's the one who farts. Get it? Ha-ha-ha-ha! Man, that's pure genius! You're the Tom Green of gonzo writers, Taibbi. Have you heard of Tom Green? I bet you have. Damn, imagine if Taibbi and Green did a show together--the funny sparks would fly! Can anyone set that up? I'd pay money for that.

Magic Rat | January 10, 2009 8:51 PM

Remember when Rolling Stone wrote about Music & the Music industry. How could anyone take political opinion in such a liberal rag seriously? I am cancelling my subsription to RS and subscribing to Time or Newsweek. At least I will read and consider those opinions.

Willie Watters | January 10, 2009 7:12 PM

I laughed OUT LOUD reading Matt's 'The Great Derangemnet,' but, man- this Rolling Stone 'interview' is funny as shit! Taibbi does Bush in pitch-perfect writing... the very BEST writing ever.
I recommended Matt on my stupid blog:
www.houseofh2o.blogspot.com, and have received hundreds of thank-you messages for doing so.

I heart Matt Taibbi so much. Nixon-Frost? That was total bullshit... Matt does Taibbi-Bush, playing both parts to perfection

Jeff Hale | January 10, 2009 11:08 AM

Wow is right! What a garb magazine. Since when did a bunch of dope smoking groupies become political experts. But I do have to admit, the mag does make good flame starter for my fireplace. Can't wait til my subscription runs out. I thought we were going to talk rock & roll. Go back to the bong dudes. You wrote a better rag back in those days.

plural | January 9, 2009 3:21 AM

Wow. Dude, I love your writing, but that was fucking garbage.

Adam | January 8, 2009 9:17 PM

This is the definition of pandering.
