Speaking of Whiners

October 30, 2008 12:02 PM

In connection with the whole whining theme, something has to be said about Republican third-stringer Michelle Malkin’s column yesterday. As noted, we should all brace ourselves for an unprecedented period of whining about liberal media bias; it's starting already, with hacks like Malkin already cranking out what essentially are early election post-mortems, blaming the already-conceded McCain loss on the campaign press.

Malkin listed five major crimes of liberal bias committed by the “Obamedia.” One is the absurd story about a “suppressed” videotape purportedly showing Barack Obama attending a “Jew-bash” party with Palestinian professor Rashid Khalidi, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

A quick note about that. I think it is fair to say that all of America is now aware that Obama has, several times in his life, been in the company of Ayers. He may even have touched him physically, perhaps even with his hands. It has been conclusively demonstrated that America does not really give a shit. We are in the middle of a global economic crisis. The stock market has lost a huge percentage of its value. We continually hear of mass layoffs and other nightmares. Nobody cares even a little that Barack Obama has attended a party or two with the likes of Bill Ayers and Rashid Khalidi. In fact we can pretty much show that once McCain started making these charges the centerpiece of his campaign, his poll numbers plummeted.

The Republicans who are feeding stooges like Malkin these talking points must know this. So what is this Los Angeles Times story really about? What they’re trying to do here is drum up McCain support by concocting a media “cover-up." It’s the same basic warmed-over horseshit — the Obama/Ayers connection — but this time it’s presented in a way that’s designed to make the target not Ayers or Khalidi or terrorism, but the press.

It won’t work, but that’s another story for another day. More interesting, however, is her second “most shameful bias” by the “Obamedia.” I quote:

Ogling Obama. In May, CNN posted “breaking news video” of female journalists on Obama’s press plane moaning and fawning over the Democratic presidential candidate as he talked on his cell phone. The caption listed on the network’s website: “Obama in jeans: Sen. Barack Obama surprises the press corps by wearing jeans.” In the clip, several members of the press corps yell at a Secret Service agent to “sit down” because she’s obstructing their view of their beloved Obama. You can hear the journalists giggle and sigh as Obama straddles across a row of seats and they furiously click away on their cameras. “You’re killing us,” one of them truckles breathlessly.

    No, you’re killing yourselves.

Now, I bring this up because Malkin either has never been on a campaign plane, or she’s willfully lying here in her interpretation. I have been on these planes quite a lot, and I’ve seen this exact scene replicated any number of times, with candidates from both parties, and this so-called “ogling” isn’t ogling at all but a sheer herd-animal rush to get shots of the candidates in any pose. TV cameramen and still shooters literally bound to their feet and bum rush the candidate’s section of the plane every time a candidate comes into their field of view — I’ve seen this with McCain and I’ve seen it with John Kerry and I’ve seen it with Howard Dean. Hell, I’ve seen photographers moan openly at cops in Newark to get the hell out of the way at a Tom Tancredo event.

The notion that campaign reporters would be sexually fawning over a candidate they see ten thousand times a day is preposterous. These people are professionals; their jobs may be silly and demeaning, and may at times involve knocking innocent people over in order to get a picture of John Kerry throwing a baseball or John McCain scooping out a meatball at a VFW Hall buffet, but as with hauling garbage cans or cleaning elephant cages at a zoo, a job is a job. A lot of these shooters can’t go to bed or get any rest at all until they get the shots they need, however idiotic those shots might be. So if a Secret Service agent stands between them and an hour’s sleep on the plane, yes, they will yell at them to sit the fuck down. I’ve seen this exact scene — where someone among the photogs yells something like “You’re killing us!” or “Come on, we can’t see!” at a staffer or an agent — literally dozens of times. It has nothing to do with fawning over the candidate. The candidate might as well be a prize Holstein cow for all they care. It has to do with a collective desire to punch the clock and finish work for the day. Anyone who’s been through the traveling press routine — which generally doesn’t involve more than a few hours of rest a day, if that — knows exactly what that scene was all about.

I’ll say this about Michelle Malkin: she has a future in this business. I see her replacing Ann Coulter in that right-wing dipshit hierarchy. The last few times I’ve seen Coulter on TV, I haven’t been able to take my eyes off her Adam’s apple. By 2012 she’s going to be doing ping-pong ball acts at drag clubs in Reno. Malkin, though, she’s hardworking, dumb, and shameless, just like Sarah Palin, who I think has a big future four years from now. So get ready for more of this stuff. It’s only just started and they’ve got four long years of target practice coming.

Hey, Ronjazz, those GOP homophobes that you talked about - are they the same ones that voted to ban gay marriage in a state full of Democrats? Or are the homophobes the ones who went and stirred shit up in Catholic Churches blaming them for voting it yet didn't go to any predominantly black or hispanic churches to start shit despite the fact that exit polls had those two groups voting to ban gay marriage more than any other group? I'll tell you why they didn't - THEY'RE PUSSIES.

Mitchell Young | November 24, 2008 1:11 PM

Are you serious about your 'interpretation' of the campaign plane video? If you watched (or really listened) to it you'd know the situation was not 'photographers' wanting to get a shot. You're too intelligent for that... so I am assuming you are being ironic.

I do take the point that its time to stop whining so much about the media. They are liberal, that's the way it is. Time to shut up a bit (though the squeaky wheel does get the grease)

Oh, and dude, Sarah Palin can and will eat your lunch.

Dave | November 9, 2008 1:03 AM

I don't follow Michelle Malkin. I've read one or two things from her — posted on some other site — and it was contrived, Republican talking points. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Any partisan can offer up contrived talking points. But after awhile, it's an absolute bore. And it's designed to fuck with people's minds.

latawata | November 5, 2008 11:55 AM

finally, a site where i can find your writing without having to search RS to see if you have posted more gold

thanks!

jeff d. (again) | November 3, 2008 2:18 AM

in the words of Taibbi himself:

"Let's just say, hypothetically, that the media is biased. Let's say you're a conservative and you're just convinced CNN's management wants the Democrats to win. And let's say that's true (it isn't — the only true allegiance any of these companies has is financial in nature — but that's another issue). Okay, then, fine. So what? So patronize another media company whose views you do agree with. It's not like there's a shortage of them out there. If your complaint is that these companies have undue influence on the rest of society, and therefore undue political influence over you, well, then, whose fault is that? Yours, clearly, because you didn't do anything about it."

Just an Observer | November 2, 2008 10:11 AM

Martin Mull always said that Hollywood was High School with money. Politics is just high school for grown ups and Taibbi reports on the juvenile absurdity of it all.

What’s really painful is the lack of genuine news sources to weigh in on the issues, candidates, supporters, without the BS filter. Broadcast news is entertainment, pure and simple. Print news is a writer’s opinion of factual information and online news is a cornucopia of fact and fiction.

It will be interesting to watch the media love affair with Obama turn sour as historically the media loves to build someone up, bask in their glory and then tear them down to shreds. That my friend’s is entertainment.

ronjazz | November 1, 2008 5:37 PM

Thompson, by all means, throw your vote away on the cancer-ridden liar and his GOP whore running mate. The GOP has proudly morphed into the party of hate, homophobia, fear and incompetence, with no help from Taibbi or me. You're the one they're looking for: angry for no reason, and stupid enough to still be on the fence.

Leo | November 1, 2008 5:35 AM

Thompson knows full well who he's voting for. Or at least who he's not voting for. It is transparent in his post. He's just another one of those whiners failing to convince anyone that "if Taibbi doesn't behave himself, I might just have to vote for the other guy. Take that."

Here's an idea. If you don't like the writing, don't read the blog. Or better yet, write your own.

jeff d. | November 1, 2008 2:53 AM

to those on whatever side you stand--for, against, or, frankly, indifferent to Taibbi--you're levels of idiocy are baffling. but especially those in disagreement with Taibbi and the left-leaners generally, it's funny that you bitch about name-calling, or Obama's mediocrity, etc--bottom line: you're still reading his columns. ultimately, that's what matters. do any of you really believe Taibbi gives a shit that you disagree with him? the more people who read him means the greater his job security.

if you had any clue, you'd ignore him so he'd go away. but that would just be sad, as Taibbi has the sharpest, most pointed criticism around. for those who think he's "in the bag" for the democrats, well, you've clearly not read much of his previous work. and that, really, just emphasizes your ignorance.

amazing~

General Jack D. Ripper | October 31, 2008 8:32 PM

Bub, how dare you marginalize Soviet attempts to fuck with our drinking water?!

Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?

I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

bub | October 31, 2008 4:13 PM

Rightwingers are in their natural state marginalized whiners. Seeing commies under your bed and certainty that fluoride was being piped directly from the Kremlin's sub-basement into our water supply is the traditional mental habitat of these creatures.

Now that their ranks are bloated by a season of having a like-minded president and their very own TV network, they will be louder and more obnoxious than ever.

That, and losing puts them in a very bad mood.

Bruce VB | October 31, 2008 2:23 PM

I listen to you on Imus and have always enjoyed you. However you have gone so far left I cannot support you any longer.

Calling Malkin a third stringer; What's that? She isn't smart and do as well or better than the main stream media?

We will see on Tuesday. It's not over yet.

tm46 | October 31, 2008 1:27 PM

Is the whole agenda behind most of your readers to have only one party....hmm sounds like communism. Let's be smart here. Both parties don't work well with only their party in charge. It surely won't work with Obama's Lets Reward Mediocity campaign. Clinton didn't even enjoy his success until the people voted out all the Dems for his second term. .

AWB | October 31, 2008 1:18 PM

Keep your posts coming, Matt Taibbi. You have many fans out here, but I suspect you know that.

Peter | October 31, 2008 7:44 AM

Jason,
First of all, great use of the thesaurus there, champ. Bet you're killer at parties.

Secondly, please be careful about accusing Matt Thompson of making an "error" simply because he stated a negative perception of this article. It's called an opinion. That's what kills me about left wing "dipshits" (very creative word, by the way - I agree with Thompson on this - words like this simply sound desperate and juvenile, but I'll play along and use it because it obviously resonates with this crowd) - if someone has an opinion, they're expressing a belief, not a fact.

Common sense, for sure, but a great reminder to some of the hyper-sensitive posters on this blog.

Randy | October 31, 2008 4:30 AM

I always thought Sean Hannity would be the one doing ping-pong ball tricks at a drag bar long before Ann Coulter thought of taking up the sport.

While you seem to be in the mood, how 'bout a good shellacking for Greta van Susteren. She's in desperate need of a good face cracking.

Ryan | October 30, 2008 10:59 PM

"Hardworking, dumb, and shameless."

Quick thought: Assuming Obama wins, and Sarah Palin becomes a leading figure in the Republican Party leading up to 2012 (as some have suggested), could she be the final death nail for the Republican Party? The country is clearly moving left already, and she would be sure to move the GOP to the extreme right. I don't see good things happening for the GOP if she is at the forefront. Let's hope that they are dumb enough to throw her out there.

Scott Tennant | October 30, 2008 8:06 PM

Taibbi:

Loved the exchange with Byron York and his utter bewilderment about credit default swaps.
Please God drop everything you are doing and write at length at this.

The batshit brigade of friends and relatives (usually the oldest and least informed) of mine are utterly convinced that Barney Frank, Pelosi et al have caused the collapse of our global financial system. This combined with an Obama win will drive these folks over the edge. Which wouldn't be an altogether bad thing if my wife and I didn't have to spend the holidays with them.

I need a big, fat Taibbian expose of this bullshit formulation so that I can enjoy my XMAS eggnog and bourbon buzz over the drone of Fox News and happy birthday to Jesus serenades that draw agonizingly closer and closer.

question: | October 30, 2008 5:30 PM

Does discussing the fact that political news is no longer about political issues help curb the problem or does it just exacerbate it? Case in point: We are talking about the absurdities of this. We haven't gone back to discussing real politics.

Where is the exit to this nightmare of a dog and pony show we call campaign coverage? I think the solution is to just ignore it all, the farce or the people calling bs on the farce. Only respond to real political discussion.

Of course that would mean I just broke my own rule. This problem is a trap. To get other people out of it, you yourself have to enter the snare yourself. Sigh.

DRP103 | October 30, 2008 4:47 PM

Mr. Taibbi is a very observant reporter, and does a very good job of seeing the absurdity of "this whole stupid election thing" (as I like to say to my friends). And, yes, thank goodness it is almost over-----what, so we can begin watching Obama-bashing on FOX news for the next 4 to 8 years, oh great?!

The new media in general are a group of dipshits anyway. The days of Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Bernard Shaw and Tom Brokaw are long gone, so forget about rationality.

It can only happen in this nuthouse called America, where people cling to the past with a nostalgia-tight grip.

Its glaringly obvious (to me anyway) that Obama represents the future, so just get over it.

jason | October 30, 2008 4:13 PM

For Matt Thompson,
Hi Matt. You are actually making an analytic error here. Certainly Taibbi’s aggressive polemical style is not everyone’s cup of tea, but unlike the bloggers who orient their work around unsupported rumor, vague and demeaning character insinuation, or a facile, undifferentiated cynicism, Taibbi’s approach, in my experience, is to make specific criticisms about political positions and tactics, or about journalistic habits, and then to accentuate his point with a healthy dose of rhetorical flourish. The attacks are grounded in evidence (the interpretation of which you can agree or dissagree with on a case-by-case basis) and they often involve perception of important patterns in our political economy and media dynamics that otherwise go little remarked upon in the minutia of daily political reportage. The attacks manage an unusual degree of focus from being delivered in an intense way, so it’s an easy feature of the writing to worry about, but intensity really shouldn’t be a sole criterion for judging the work. Just as all skepticism or criticism in general is not equally unfair, all intensity (including even sarcasm and rhetorical exaggeration) is not equally unfair or harmful, because it arises in different contexts in different pieces of writing and serves different purposes.

MJKeenan | October 30, 2008 3:33 PM

At least Malkin is hot.

I'd fuck the conservatism out of her.

jbou | October 30, 2008 3:31 PM

Matt, you are a big draw for the right wing nuts.

Malkin is a joke and should be treated as such.

Rob | October 30, 2008 3:29 PM

This message is for Matt Thompson. You are still on the fence about this election? God, I would hate trying to figure out a place to go out and eat with you...It's been 2 years, I'm hungry, just pick a place. It pains me that jack asses like you will decide this election. Only the galactically stupid do not know who they are voting for at this point.

Joe | October 30, 2008 1:30 PM

My original comment was for Matt Thompson, not Mr. Taibbi. Just for clarification.

Joe | October 30, 2008 1:29 PM

Matt,

Get over yourself and your false sense of values... and get a sense of humor.

After all, if it walks like a dipshit, talks like a dipshit and smells like a dipshit... it's probably a dipshit.

Matt Thompson | October 30, 2008 1:17 PM

Credit is certainly due to you, Mr. Taibbi, for your engaging prose. Very, very engaging. Your elementary schoolkid name-calling reads as desperate and laughable. This reeks of your own insecurity (not to mention the party you adhere to) and, judging by your apparent ties to the liberal agenda after reading a couple of your entries, quite discrediting.

To people like myself who are still quite on the fence as to who they will vote for this Tuesday, you might be interested in knowing flamingly negative and arrogant messages like these are a disservice to your political affiliation.

Cook Torrence | October 30, 2008 12:32 PM

I'd like to add that I don't think it's offensive in either case. Just shamelessly transparent.

Cook Torrence | October 30, 2008 12:31 PM

In the passage quoted, Malkin is clearly playing the "Obama is stealin ur white wimmin" card. Malkin loves to play the race card the same way rappers love to say the n word - as in, it's not offensive because she isn't White.
