It was hot, it was dirty, and it took a very long time to be over — but it's finally time to light that cigarette after the 2008 presidential race. In the end, this strange and bitterly fought campaign season was really about two things: the unbelievable, almost inexpressible incompetence of the Republican Party, and the commensurate rise, on the other side, of the remarkable figure Barack Obama.

So now, from Mitt Romney as a Kmart shopper to Hillary Clinton as a horse, a few favorite moments from the trail.

You were the lighthouse of cynicism in the vast darkness of bullshit, but your recent articles are either dimming, or getting covered in bullshit. What's the deal?

I finally got a few minutes to read this article today. I printed it last week after hearing Don Imus again mention his love for all things Taibbi. This article is the first one I have ever read by Mr. Taibbi.

I did not expect journalism. But I hoped for smart and original thought. I absolutely expected more than an imitation of the last smart ass that mattered, Mr. Thompson. I was disappointed.

Mr. Taibbi, I would ask that if you are going to imitate Thompson's work that you at least study his rhythm. You might want to try using a type writer.

It is laughable that anybody would refer to Barack Obama as a remarkable figure. He's an empty suit.

Taibbi,

Please tell us you'll be "live-blogging" election night. You can do it on whatever drug of choice. Just do it.

Matt, I just wanted to thank you for everything you do. The world seems to make you just as angry as it makes me and yet you find a way to survive without hiding under the covers like I am frequently tempted to do. You not only face the world but send it back to us through your lens. By contrast, I had to leave the country in order to process all of the craziness without letting it get to me.

Your latest book is the closest thing to a Bible I have right now.

I wish you well and hope to see more of you around.

Dear Matt,
As we remember the passing of the Great one--Studs Terkel-- the completely decent man who wrote wondrous words, I wanted to thank you for your journalistic service during the Campaign 2008! Really appreciated your acute and profound and often profane commentary!
