Photo: Jane Richey A few weeks back we had the honor of interviewing legendary songwriter JJ Cale about his new album, Roll On. We wrote about it in the last issue of RS. Check it out right here.
Turns out that the man who wrote the awesome Clapton hits "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" is one of the most down-to-earth dudes we've ever met.
And Roll On is an incredible album. We've been listening to it nonstop!
As he has throughout his career, JJ played pretty much every instrument on Roll On, and his lyrics couldn't be more perfect and economical. On the album he sings about the old days, and he sings (a lot) about loose women, but our favorite song on the album, "Leaving In the Morning," which addresses mortality. (JJ is seventy years young!)
It's one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Please enjoy.
Then get your hands on the whole album.

We are seriously digging Mean Everything To Nothing, the new album by Manchester Orchestra (out in April).
This is the third album by the quintet, who hail from Atlanta and are led by singer Andy Hull.
Check out "I've Got Friends," below.

If you're not yet hip to them, the Features are the Nashville-based rock quartet who made a splash scene back in 2006 with their killer debut, Exhibit A. That year they went on tour with fellow Tennesseans the Kings of Leon, and played gigs with the Raconteurs and the Walkmen.
The Features are back with their second LP, Some Kind of Salvation. The record will be released on May 26th, and features production work by KOL and Tom Waits producer Jacquire King.
Check out the Salvation track "Lions," below and head over to their website for more.

An unreleased Beatles tune has popped up on the internet, and it's pretty cool.
The nearly 11-minute track is apparently "Take 20" of the White Album's "Revolution 1." It starts off with studio chatter, including a high-pitched John Lennon saying, "Take your knickers off and let's go," before it goes into a a take on "Revolution 1." Around the five-minute mark the song takes an unexpected turn toward "Revolution 9" territory, using tape loops, voice distortion and samples.
"Take 20" ends with some heady conversation between Lennon and Yoko Ono, something about being naked and how things are "going to be alright."

Yes, only at the S.S. will you find the first single from Tinted Windows, the new supergroup featuring Taylor Hanson, James Iha, Adam Schlesinger and Bun E. Carlos.
It's called "Kind of a Girl," and will be featured on the Windows' self-titled debut album, dropping on April 21st.
The initial spark for Tinted Windows occurred in the mid-Nineties, when Taylor and Adam (from Fountains of Wayne) first crossed paths. "Ever since we met, Taylor and I had talked about trying to do something together," says Adam, who has also worked closely with Iha over the years. The trio eventually bonded over power-pop, rock and New Wave. "We talked about everything from the Buzzcocks to the Knack," says Iha. "And, of course, Cheap Trick." On a whim they invited Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos into the mix, and he said yes!
So here ya go.
Tell us what you think!

Pearl Jam fans, here ya go.
For the first time anywhere, check out two tracks from the upcoming reissue of Pearl Jam's epic 1991 debut, Ten. Check out a leaner, grittier, nastier mix of "Porch," and then dig "Brother," a Ten outtake.
On March 24th, Pearl Jam will reissue Ten. Longtime producer Brendan O'Brien has remixed the original tracks -- which, we can attest, sound better than the original versions -- and a slew of B-sides and rarities will be included. The reissued album will come in four different special editions, each containing a remastered copy of the original album, plus the O'Brien remixed version.
Dig it.

Below, check out two new songs from Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold. Under the moniker White Antelope, Pecknold covers "False Knight on the Road" -- a traditional popularized by the British folk outfit Steeleye Span -- and a short instrumental called "Guitar Duet." Both tunes are cool.
Pecknold told the Chocolate Bobka blog that he'll continue to post demos on his White Antelope MySpace before they are released on record, and that coming soon is a cover of Judee Sills' "Ridge Rider."
Why all the covers?
"Trying to write new stuff is hard right now for some reason," he said.
